Poll fever on extreme high
Sandhwan (Nawanshahr), May 8 Having remained inactive in the political scene for the past few years, Kainth has reportedly again started meeting his close associates and regaining his lost strength in the area in support of the Congress. A Dalit leader of the area, he was one of the oldest members of the BSP. He had been MLA from Banga in 1992 on the BSP ticket. He had quit the party in 1998 and then won the general elections from Phillaur as an Independent candidate with the SAD support. He had later again aligned with the BSP after which he parted ways again in 2004. Having distanced himself from the BSP, he enjoys dubbing it as a party that has been exploiting the poor. Former Jalandhar Mayor Surinder Mahey, too, has been canvassing for Bittu in his rallies. The SAD candidate, Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema, on the other hand, is expecting his party’s Sangrur candidate S.S. Dhindsa and Patiala candidate Chandumajra with him in the next few days. Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal, too, is scheduled to hold a rally in favour of Cheema at Balachaur on Sunday noon. |

Smriti Irani campaigns for Som Parkash
Hoshiarpur, May 8 Referring to the November 26 terrorist strike in Mumbai, she said instead of taking direct action against the enemies of the country, the Congress-led UPA government was seeking action against them from the US Government. It had brought bad name for the country. Condemning former Home Minister Shiv Raj Patil for its complete failure in maintaining law and order in the country and in protecting the lives and properties of the public, Smriti Irani exhorted the electorate, especially women, to discard Congress candidates in the election and vote for the BJP and its allied parties to save the country from disaster. Punjab Minister for Medical Education and Research, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour and Forest Tikshan Sud and other local leaders of the BJP also addressed the rally. On account of late arrival of Smriti Irani, the road show of the BJP candidate Som Parkash could not be held. |

Nawanshahr, May 8 Addressing the rally, national general secretary of the BSP, Narinder Kashyap, urged the party workers not to fall prey to money and liquor and to vote for Mayawati so that she became the PM. While terming the Congress as the main enemy of the dalits, Kashayap attributed problems like poverty, illiteracy, unemployment etc. to the misrule of the Congress. Taking a dig at the BJP, BSP leader said that the BJP had adopted a habit of forgetting Lord Rama after seeking votes in his name during elections, then how could the BJP remember the common man after elections. |

In a press note released here this evening, Assistant Director, Public Relations, Aman Mittal said, “In the meeting students have shown their concern on the damaged made by some miscreants in the university and have strongly recommended the action against them. They agreed that their actions were driven by the provocation of the external bodies which they now understand have used them for their own interest. “The students have shown their satisfaction on the action taken by the university on all their demands. Their demands of the attendance and marks which the students have lost due to these holidays have also been taken care of by the university.
