In a match important for both sides to arrest their recent slides, Deccan Chargers prevailed, comfortably beating Mumbai Indians by 19 runs. This carried the previous competition leaders to joint top spot in the league table with 10 points from eight matches.

Mumbai remained stationary in second last position with seven points from eight matches with their prospects of qualifying for the semi-finals getting tougher. Mumbai experienced an unsettling start. Sanath Jayasuriya perished to a diving catch by Ryan Harris at thirdman. Off the very next ball, Sachin Tendulkar was bowled through the gate as R P Singh bent one into him. This also took the left-arm medium pacer past

Yusuf Abdullah of Kings XI Punjab as the tournaments highest wicket-taker, earning him the purple cap.

For Mumbai, it was seven for two, as Jean Paul Duminy joined Pinal Shah. Unfazed, the latter pummelled medium pacer Dwayne Smith for sixes to square leg and midwicket. The pair realised 50 for the 3rd wicket. But Smith had his revenge, catching Shah at cow’s corner as the batsman ventured a slog sweep.

As long as Duminy remained, Mumbai were in with a shout. But if Rohit Sharma’s blossoming efforts with the bat had been nipped in the bud, he resurfaced as an off-spinner to capture four wickets, including, sensationally, a hat-trick, to decimate Mumbai’s chances.

He bowled Abhishek Nayyar around his legs; then Harbhajan Singh played on. Off the first ball of his next over, Duminy under edged a sweep to be caught behind. At 107 for eight in 17.1 overs, it was effectively end of story.

A sharp shower prior to start of play threatened to disrupt the show. But it soon cleared; and notwithstanding a weekday, spectators began to occupy the combination of concrete stands and grass banks that constitute the venue.

Adam Gilchrist ignored the likely residual moisture to bat first. But there was movement in the air with the new ball; and Herschelle Gibbs, a cult figure in these parts, was soon beaten by an outswinger from Dhawal Kulkarni, replacing Zaheer Khan, who is nursing a shoulder injury.

Gilchrist abandoned his generally blaster demeanour. Indeed, only after Tirumalsetti Suman had despatched Harbhajan for two straight sixes in the off-spinner’s first over, did the veteran Aussie swing the same bowler to midwicket for equal value in his succeeding over.

Neither, though, lasted long. Suman was caught behind off Bravo trying to give himself room to force into the off-side. Gilchrist was bowled by the lively Rohan Raje playing across the line. Smith, after a solitary hurrah of a six to midwicket at the expense of Raje, also had his stumps mutilated by the left-arm spin of Jayasuriya.

Sharma walked in at number four and announced himself by pulling Raje to midwicket for six. In a composed fashion he kept the score ticking, though not with the urgency demand in T20. Venugopal Rao, joining him at the fall of the 4th wicket, carted Jayasuriya for a maximum over extra cover.

Sunshine had turned to city lights, not to mention floodlights bathing the green turf. A half full stadium waited in anticipation of a Sharma offensive; but an acrobatic catch doused this possibility.

Sri Lanka’s speedy Lasith Malinga had been askew in his first two overs. Sharma, now, met the first ball of his second spell with a booming on-drive. The rubbery Bravo, racing in from long on, literally flew forward to cling on.

Kings to clash with Super Kings

Centurion, May 6
After a thumping win over Deccan Chargers in their last encounter, a rejuvenated Chennai Super Kings will eye their fourth consecutive victory against Kings XI Punjab when the two teams square off in an Indian Premier League match here tomorrow.

The 78-run victory against the Deccans has only added to the growing confidence of the Chennai side as the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led team who fell at the final hurdle last year, is now seating comfortably second in the points tally.

In contrast, the Punjab team, who lost their last match to the defending champions Rajasthan Royals, are on the sixth place in the tally with four wins and they will certainly count upon their batting might to register another win to go up in the standing.

Skipper Yuvraj Singh, who made gutsy 37-ball 48 on a losing cause against Rajasthan, is mainstay of their batting line-up with in-form Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene and Australia batsman Simon Katich joining him in middle order.

After young opener Sunny Sohal's golden duck in Rajasthan match, Yuvraj might opt for the previous combination at the beginning of innings and may himself pair up with their Sri Lankan import Kumar Sangakkara.

Their left-arm paceman Yusuf Abdulla has surely made the batsmen's life miserable and currently holding the purple cap with 14 scalps so far, but Irfan Pathan and S Sreesanth have to lend support to the South African and fire in unison to break the mighty Chennai batting. On the other hand, Chennai team has found a devastating opener in Matthew Hayden, who has exhibited some superb batting even after retiring from the international circuit, and M Vijay, who also impressed in the last match. — PTI

Royals up for challenge

Riding high after their crushing victory over Kings XI Punjab, defending champions Rajasthan Royals will be gunning for revenge against Bangalore Royal Challengers in what promises to be a cracker of a Indian Premier League (IPL) contest here on Thursday. In their first meeting, Royal Challengers defeated Rajasthan Royals by a huge 75-run margin. — IANS

Bopara fully justified his promotion to the problematic number three spot with his second century in consecutive tests, batting with painstaking application to reach 118 not out in his first test at Lord’s.

Edwards bowled with sustained hostility, late away swing from the right handers and no luck at all. After bowling Alastair Cook for 35, he dismissed Kevin Pietersen with his next ball, caught one-handed by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin, and Paul Collingwood (8) caught low down at second slip by Devon Smith. He also accounted for Matt Prior, caught in the covers for 42.

But after tea, Edwards had Bopara dropped at square leg by Brendan Nash on 76, then watched in frustration as Stuart Broad was put down on nine and 13. — Reuters

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice and Ji-Sung Park got the other goal as United dominated Arsenal to set up a final against either Chelsea or Barcelona, who meet Wednesday, having drawn the first leg in Spain.

The only disappointment for United was the sending-off of Darren Fletcher in the 75th minute which means the midfielder will miss the final. Fletcher was sent off for the challenge - Robin van Persie converted the penalty - and though television replays showed Fletcher had got the ball, the rules do not allow an appeal. “It’s terribly unlucky,” Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said. “You can see the ball moved in a different direction from Cesc Fabregas. I think the referee (Roberto Rosetti) is one of the best in Europe and he had a view, but there is nothing we can do.

“In all the big games over the past few years, Darren’s been a big player for us.” — DPA
