WC secretariat shifted to Mumbai
Mumbai, April 28 Accordingly, the opening match of the 10th edition of the quadrennial tournament would be held as scheduled in Bangladesh on February 19, 2011, while the final would be held in India. The opening ceremony of cricket's showpiece event would also be held in Bangladesh on February 18. “The Central Organising Committee, which continues to have Sharad Pawar heading it, has reallocated the matches by which India would host 29 games across eight venues, Sri Lanka 12 games across three and Bangladesh eight at two venues,” ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat said here. “Bangladesh would play host to two quarter finals while one quarter final each would be held by India and Sri Lanka who will also split the two semi finals equally. The final would be held in India (in March, 2011),” Lorgat said. The reallocation of matches was necessitated by the ICC's decision to take away co-hosting rights from Pakistan due to security concerns. Pakistan was slated to host 14 ties, including a semifinal, while Lahore was named the home of the secretariat. “The Central Organising Committee was also reorganised and will continue to be headed by Sharad Pawar with representatives from the three World Cup hosting countries and a representative of the ICC,” Lorgat said. The World Cup Organising Committee also relocated the Secretariat from Lahore to the BCCI's headquarters in Mumbai, besides appointing BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty as the Event Managing Director. “Prof Shetty will be the Event Managing Director while I S Bindra, the special adviser to the ICC, would be a key person in the management of the World Cup. The secretariat will be in Mumbai in the offices of the BCCI”, the ICC CEO said. There would also be a venue inspection group to oversee the preparation for the mega event in which BCCI secretary N Srinivasan and Shetty, along with Bangladesh's Mahbubul Anam, are members, Lorgat said. Lorgat assured that the security concerns of the various members of the ICC and the players would be addressed with the formation of a special committee, headed by BCCI President Shashank Manohar, to oversee the security details. “The security arrangements are very important and a special committee with Mr Shashank Manohar at its helm would put together security plans for the successful conduct of the World Cup in 2011”, the ICC official said. “It will be an ongoing process till World Cup 2011, and we will do our best to convince players and other countries in addressing security issues,” Lorgat said. He also said the ICC has not received any communication, in writing or otherwise, from the Pakistan Cricket Board about their team not wanting to play any World Cup tie in India. “We have nothing on the table. We would cross the bridge when we reach it. I don’t think Pakistan would object (to playing matches in India),” he maintained. Lorgat did not read much into the decision of the Indian Premier League not to have members of the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit overseeing its running of matches. “It’s the BCCI’s prerogative whether to ask for ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit’s assistance or not in the IPL,” he said. The meeting was attended by Pawar (chairman), Bindra, Manohar, Srinivasan and M P Pandove (all from BCCI), Lt Gen Sina Ibn Jamali, Mahbubul Anam and Shafiqur Rahnan (all from Bangladesh Cricket Board), D S De Silva, Nishantha Ranatunga, Sujeewa Rajapakse and Duleep Mendis (all from Sri Lanka Cricket Board) and Lorgat. — PTI |
Tendulkar, Sanath prove a point
Port Elizabeth, April 28 The 36-year-old Tendulkar's 45-ball 68 was laced with six boundaries and four sixes, including one that went over the park. His opening partner, the 39-year-old Jayasuriya scored 52 off 32 balls with four sixes and two boundaries as the Mumbai Indians raced to 187 for six at St George's Park. Knight Riders opening pair of Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum needed to match the veteran duo but disappointed as the Shah Rukh Khan-owned side capitulated for 95. Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly and Australian Brad Hodge staged a brief fightback but once their 54-run partnership was brought to an end by Abhishek Nayar, it was one way traffic as Lasith Malinga ripped through the tail. Ganguly topscored for the Knight Riders, with a 30-ball 34, hitting a six and three fours while Hodge scored 24 off 22 balls. — PTI Scoreboard Mumbai Indians: Kolkata Knight Riders: |
Yusuf, Smith end Daredevils’ royal streak Centurion, April 28
Chasing a modest 144, Rajasthan Royals rode on Pathan's buccaneering 62 of 30 balls and Smith's sensible 42 off 46 balls to cruise to 147 for five in 18.3 overs to register their second victory of the tournament and end Daredevils winning run. Elected to bat, earlier, a fighting half-century from AB de Villiers and some lusty hitting down the order from Daniel Vettori and Mithun Manhas helped Delhi Daredevils post 143 for seven after Rajasthan bowlers sent packing four Delhi top-order batsmen with the scoreboard reading 49.
The Royals started their run chase on a cautious note but were little unlucky as Rob Quiney departed early lbw to Nehra, but TV replays clearly showed he hit the ball. Swapnil Asnodkar, demoted from the opening position, showed glimpses of his last year's brilliance, picking up 10 runs off Pradeep Sangwan's first over before running himself out in search of a non-existent single. Next man in Paul Valthaty (1) didn't trouble the scorers. Graeme Smith, on the other hand, played the role of a sheet anchor, but didn't get ample support from the other end. The strategic timeout seemed to have worked in Delhi's favour as Mishra struck twice after the break, first dismissing Jadeja caught in the deep by Sangwan and then stumped Rajasthan skipper Shane Warne. But Pathan had other plans as hit two consecutive sixes and a four of Vettori to take 19 runs of the 13th over and signal his intentions. As if that was not enoungh, neeeding 35 off 24 balls, Mishra gave away 18 runs in his last over, courtesy a six and four from Pathan and a boundary from Smith. Pathan was in a hurry to wrap up the proceedings and hit Nehra for consecutive sixes and four to draw curtains on the match. Earlier, De Villiers and Vettori ensured that Delhi put up a decent total, stitching together a crucial 56-run sixth-wicket. It was a dream start for the Royals as the dynamic Delhi opening duo of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir failed to make make any impact once again. Dimitri Mascarenhas picked up the opening duo Sehwag and Gambhir in his eventful second over after the Delhi skipper clobbered him for two boundaries. Gambhir was the first to depart when skipper Shane Warne latched on to a blinder at the first slip in the third ball of Mascarenhas' second over. Sehwag, who hit the Englishman for a six in the very first ball he faced, followed soon, giving a skier to Kamran Khan at mid-on after hitting Mascarenhas for a boundary. First change Munaf Patel (2/14) struck gold in his very first over when in-form Tillakaratne Dilshan's (7) ambitious pull found Swapnil Asnodkar at square-leg. Warne added more woes for Delhi when he picked up Karthik in his first over with the wicketkeeper batsman giving away a simple catch back to the Australian. Delhi could have been reduced to 66 for five at the halfway mark had Munaf not bowled a no ball in the ninth over with Vettori edging one to Warne at first slip. — PTI Scoreboard

Kings XI meet Mumbai in crucial tie
Durban, April 28 The wins lifted the pall of gloom that had descended on the Kings XI camp following their defeats against Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders in two rain-marred ties. In contrast, the Sachin Tendulkar-led Mumbai Indians got off to a perfect start with a victory over last year's finalist Chennai Super Kings before sharing points with Rajasthan Royals from their washed out outing. Tendulkar and his men tasted their first defeat against the all-conquering Deccan Chargers in their third tie but shrugged off the setback with a thumping 92-run win against the Knight Riders last night. Tendulkar himself has led from the front with his consistent display at the top, in company of the ageless Sanath Jayasuriya. KKR, BRC square off in battle of survival
High on star power but low on performance, tournament laggards Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore square off in a battle of survival in the Indian Premier League here tomorrow. There is an intriguing similarity between the sides, both of whom dumped former India skippers and handed over captaincy reigns to foreign imports before the second edition of the tournament. However, neither Brendon McCullum nor Kevin Pietersen could work wonder and both the Knight Riders and Royal Challengers have just one win against their name from five outings. The Pietersen-led Bangalore, which was second from bottom the last time around, could end up repeating that performance considering the way things have gone for it so far. The outfit owned by liquor baron Vijay Mallya was off to a flier, beating defending champions Rajasthan Royals in the opening match but its fortunes have nosedived ever since.

Knights need a change of guard?
Kolkata, April 28 Controversy-ridden Kolkata Knight Riders, which floated the idea of 'multiple captaincy' to replace Ganguly with Brendon McCullum a day before the tournament, are yet to fire up in the tournament. “It’s not the same (Brendon) McCullum - who launched the inaugural tournament with an unbeaten 158, the highest total in Twenty20 cricket. The captaincy pressure is clearly showing on him. If KKR need to go up in the tournament, Ganguly is the one to lead,” Utpal Chatterjee, former Indian spinner who coached Bengal in 2008-09 season, told PTI. The Kolkata outift is languishing in the standings with a spot above last-placed Bangalore Royal Challengers with one win from five matches. With the heavy loss to Mumbai Indians yesterday, former India and Bengal players felt the need to give the captaincy once again to Ganguly to "revive the side". “It’s high time that (Sourav) Ganguly should captain the side. He is the 'best' player to lead the side,” Chatterjee said. — PTI McCullum ‘happy’ to step aside if KKR don't make semis
Durban: With Kolkata Knight Riders’ frustration mounting after every defeat, the struggling team's captain Brendon McCullum says he would be "happy to step aside" if the side fails to make the semifinals of the ongoing Indian Premier League here. “If we don’t make the semifinals then I am more than happy to step aside. To me it’s about accountability as a captain,” McCullum said after KKR succumbed to their fourth defeat in the five matches they have played so far. “I know I am going to be judged by results, my team is going to be judged by results and if I am not able to inspire my team to at least give ourselves a chance atleast in the back-end of the tournament, I am more than happy to step aside come next season,” he explained. McCullum said the crushing loss to Mumbai Indians last night has left the team frustrated. “It’s frustrating. That’s the word we have been using for the last week and a half. We were blown off the park at the top of the order by Sachin (Tendulkar) and Sanath Jayasuriya,” he said. Asked whether captaincy was taking a toll on his form with the bat, McCullum said, “I don’t think captaincy has burdened me as such. I just don't think I have played as well as what I should. I am desperately keen to put out a winning contribution from myself to be able to help my team.”
