He said Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi had given the ticket to several youth leaders and he would try to live up to the expectations of the leaders. Meanwhile, the Indian National Lok Dal today alleged that the Congress had played a bad joke with the Sirsa people by imposing an outsider as a candidate on them. Padam Jain, district president of the INLD, said the Congress had a tradition of imposing outsiders on the people of Sirsa as if the local party leaders were not capable of contesting the elections. Meanwhile, Sita Ram, INLD candidate, campaigned in Jakhal block of the Sirsa parliamentary constituency and sought votes for himself. He said people of Haryana were fed up with the “anti-people” policies of the state government and had decided to defeat the Congress in these elections. He was accompanied by former MLA Karam Singh Dangra and several other party leaders. |

He said while his decision to contest the forthcoming poll was final, he could also decide to oppose the Congress in the rest of the nine constituencies in the state. BSP woos minorities
Sirsa, April 8 Talking to mediapersons during the election campaign of party’s Sirsa candidate Rajesh Vaid here today, Man Singh Manhera, general secretary of the BSP and in charge of the Haryana affairs of the party, said neither the Congress nor the NDA had given the ticket to any person belonging to the minority communities or Dalits of the “A” category. “The BSP has fielded a Sikh, Gurdial Singh Saini, from Kurukshetra and a Muslim, Zakir Hussain, from Gurgaon as also a Balmiki, Rajesh Vaid, from the Sirsa parliamentary constituency,” said Manhera, adding that the BSP had given due representation to all communities in the state. Terming the BSP leader Mayawati as the right person to lead the country as Prime Minister, Manhera said while others had been indulging in caste and communal politics, Mayawati had shown the way by practising clean politics. He said while leaders of the Congress and the INLD from Haryana had always promoted their sons and wards, Mayawati had not given the ticket to anyone in her blood relations. Accusing the Congress of manipulating the CBI report on the Jagdish Tytler issue, Manhera said Mayawati had already announced that the 1984 anti-Sikh riots would be re-investigated if she came to power at the Centre. He justified the case under the NSA against Varun Gandhi and said in a democratic country every community had the right to live and Varun Gandhi had no business to spread hatred against Muslims in his speech. |

Arvind to seek votes on development
Karnal, April 8 “I will seek votes on the performance of the UPA government at the Centre, the state government and my own contribution to the development and welfare of the people as an MP”, he told The Tribune on his arrival here. Asked about the possible impact of the INLD-BJP alliance on his poll prospects, he said no candidate should be considered weak in an election but he was confident that with the support of the Chief Minister and other leaders and development as the poll plank, he would definitely win. Defending the setting up of a hospital at Jhajjar, Sharma clarified that it was an extension of the All-India Institute of Medical Science (New Delhi) and had to be close to Delhi. It was wrong to infer that the proposed Kalpana Chawla Hospital project for Karnal had been shifted to Jhajjar and asserted that this demand would be forcefully raised. Referring to his priorities, he said his first and foremost task would be to get Panipat town included in Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission for its planned development and launching of schemes for the welfare of poor and underprivileged sections of society. He refused to comment on caste imbalances in the allocation of the party ticket in Haryana and said it was the prerogative of the party high command to field suitable and winning candidates. While a large number of Congress workers and supporters gathered at Sharma’s house on his arrival here, Congress MLAs were not seen. Asked if there was any specific reason behind the lukewarm response of local leaders, he said they had spoken to him over the phone and had assured full support. |

Contempt of Court
Chandigarh, April 8 A petition filed by him against Chander Mohan and another respondent under the Contempt of Courts Act has failed to take off, just because the former minister is away ever since the honeymoon ended in a divorce. So far, Chander Mohan has not been served notice in the case due to his non-availability after the Fiza episode. The case came up for hearing in February, and again in March end, but on both the dates the matter was adjourned. The report placed before the court of Justice TPS Mann clearly said notice issued to respondent Chander Mohan had been received back un-served with the report that he had been dismissed by the government of Haryana. Taking up the report and the reply filed in the matter by the other respondent, Justice Mann has now fixed August 6 as the next date of hearing in the case. Dilawar Singh, in his petition, had alleged the respondents were not complying with the judgment dated September 17, 2007, “intentionally, deliberately and willfully.” Going into the background of the matter, Dilawar Singh had asserted “he was made a shuttle cock” and transferred four times in eight months for “his simple fault of abiding by the rules and regulations”. This “outrageous approach of the respondents force-landed him in the high court by way of challenging the order of transfer from Faridabad to Chandigarh”. The high court quashed the transfer orders, an appeal against it too was dismissed. The petitioner added “irked by the judgment, he was malafidely placed under suspension” by Chander Mohan. Counsel Vijay Kumar Jindal said an inquiry conducted by the state vigilance bureau into certain allegations against the petitioner were found to be false. The suspension order too was challenged and final orders were passed on September 17, 2007. Jindal added Chander Mohan, while reinstating the petitioner, posted him to Chandigarh, despite the fact he had already joined at Faridabad. |
