Panipat, April 2
A high profile sex fling involving three persons from influential industrial families of the city and a senior IPS official, presently posted at Chandigarh, has placed the Haryana Police Department in a fix. Rohtak range IG V Kamaraj has taken a rigid stance against the police official and withdrawn all charges from him.

A senior police official of the city has also come under the scanner for his alleged role in the matter. He has been accused of having accepted huge graft from the accused for not registering a case in this regard. Following this, the department has withdrawn all charges from the senior police official of the district and has also ordered verification of the allegations against him.

The incident took place on March 23 when a team of police under the senior police official raided a hotel situated on the national highway (NH) 1. The team caught three persons from the hotel, along with four women. According to sources, there was an IPS officer also present in the hotel, but just before the raid he managed to leave the place. His identify was revealed later and it was learnt that he was posted as a DSP in Panipat some time back, said a senior police official.

However, no case was registered against anybody even after the raid. As the matter came to the notice of the district police chief, he marked an inquiry into the matter, but still no case was registered.

Hotel owner’s son was also caught along with the others. However, the police did not register any case in this regard. There were rumours that the senior police official, who had conducted the raid, had received huge grafts from the industrialists for siding with them and letting them go scout free.

The official said the raid had been conducted on the basis of a tip off, but no official record was maintained. Sources said the women, who were caught at the hotel also belonged to some influential families.

There were no CCTV cameras installed in the hotel which otherwise could have been used to verify the facts. Sources said after the raid, SP MS Sheoran had even ordered an inquiry into the matter and had asked DSP Randhir Saini to look into the issue.

The IG while speaking to The Tribune confirmed that he had withdrawn all charges from the official and asked one of his officers to verify the allegations that have been leveled against him. He said till the allegations were completely verified, the official would not be given any charge as such. He said in case he was found guilty of having accepted the bribe, strict action as per the law would be taken against him or anybody else found involved.

He said as of now, none were coming forward to divulge any details of the incident and the department was finding it difficult to crack the matter.

Delay costs Cong heavily

Chandigarh, April 2
The Haryana Congress has lost the initiative it managed to steal from the Opposition when the Lok Sabha elections were announced. The ruling party had taken the march over its rivals following liberal announcements made by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for various sections of society. The party was also helped by the fact that there is virtually no anti-incumbency against the Chief Minister.

The party has lost much of the ground it had gained because of the extra-ordinary delay in the finalisation of its candidates. Though a party committee had recommended that the candidates must be finalised at least 40 days ahead of the polling, the high command has not been able to do so for the state even one month after the elections were announced. The BSP and the INLD-BJP alliance have already announced their nominees, who are thick in campaigning.

The delay is being attributed to the irreconcilable differences among various factions in the party over the choice of candidates for certain seats. Though the party could have announced the names of those candidates about whom there is no dispute, in its wisdom the party has withheld the entire list. Even the candidates, who are sure to be nominated, are sick of the delay. Many of them have decided to start campaigning without their formal nomination.

It is learnt that they have requested the AICC to finalise the list at the earliest. The media, the leaders argued, was giving an impression to the public that the Congress was a divided house.

All senior leaders, who should have been campaigning in the state, are spending their time in lobbying in Delhi for their candidates. The Opposition is making good use of the vacuum left by the Congress.

So much so that while the INLD is accusing the ruling party of violating the model code of conduct every day, there is no one from the Congress to deny the allegations.

Meanwhile, even though the Congress is yet to officially announce its list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections in Haryana sitting MP from Ambala Kumari Shelja not withstanding the announcement has decided to go ahead with her campaigning from her constituency Ambala.

Faridabad, April 2
The Congress will firm up its list of nominees for all 10 parliamentary constituencies in Haryana by first week of April.

According to sources in the ruling Congress, there was a strong possibility of the finalisation of the nominees by Saturday, though the public announcement of the same may be held up for a day or two for politically tactical reasons. A broad indication emanating from the state Congress following talks with a section of senior leaders was that the party was having no jitters over other political parties already declaring their nominees, who have started their election campaigns.
