Over 2,000 phones went dead on Saturday night as a ducting BSNL cable was reportedly damaged inadvertently by the ditch machine of private company CDS (Centro Dostroi) India, which had been involved in the construction of the Khalsa College railway overbridge (ROB).

The areas worst affected by the severing of the BSNL cable were the BSF premises, PAP campus, Shakti Sadan, Defence Colony, Atwal Colony, Guru Nanak Pura, Ranjit Nagar and several other localities situated on the Jalandhar Cantonment road.

When The Tribune visited the spot, BSNL men, under the supervision of Divisional Engineer Pritpal Singh and SDO C.M. Chopra, were trying to repair the ducting cable which consisted of two cables of 1,200 pairs and as much cables of 800 pairs.

Pritpal Singh said the repair work might take three to four days. Answering a query, he blamed the Public Works Department (PWD) for not properly coordinating with the BSNL before starting the excavation work on the left side of the Punjab War Memorial, near the bus stand. When contacted, PWD (B&R) provincial division engineer B.S. Tuli feigned ignorance about the damage of the BSNL ducting cable.

Answering a query, he said lack of coordination might be one of the reasons behind the damage.

Amritsar, March 29
The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has increased the proposed budget for installing CCTV cameras in the Golden Temple and other main Sikh shrines to a whopping Rs 2 crore. The tenders would be floated shortly for installation of the security cameras.

The huge sum, proposed to be spent to provide security cover, is likely to be debated by the opposition members of the SGPC at the annual budget session to be held here on March 30.

In another development, the SGPC has engaged private consultants for maintaining accounts of Darbar Sahib and other gurdwaras. The company would bring the entire data online that would cost the Shiromani Committee Rs 3.50 lakh per month. The accounts could be accessed by any devotee, said the SGPC chief. This is being done to maintain transparency in the working of the SGPC, he said. History and accounts of important gurdwaras (62), managed by the SGPC, would also be available online. Boards, describing their history, would also be put up outside these gurdwaras.

This amount is being spent despite the fact that some software engineers and computer companies had reportedly offered free service. This has been done even as the government audit is mandatory as per the provisions in the Sikh Gurdwara Act, 1925. Moreover, a financial adviser has been appointed at a monthly salary of Rs 20,000. The SGPC is already top heavy with three secretaries. With this, the salary budget, which is paid from donation, would go up.

It is pertinent to mention here that the SGPC is contemplating installation of more than 100 CCTV cameras for more security in the Golden Temple and Akal Takht complex.

Later, other historical gurdwaras would also have security cameras. Earlier, the proposal was mooted when Bibi Jagir Kaur was heading the SGPC. SGPC sources said the decision on CCTV camera was taken following attacks on religious places in South Asia. Cases of picking of pockets, garment thefts in the complexes and reports of children missing prompted the SGPC to act on the proposal.

The SGPC President said mobile jammers would also be installed at various locations to prevent cell users to disturb the serenity of Sikh shrines.

Three SAD councillors may rejoin Congress

Jalandhar, March 29
SAD concillors Aruna Arora and Narinder Kaur may follow in the footsteps of independent councillor Paramjit Kaur Jassal.

Close on the heels of Jassal and her husband Des Raj shifting sides, SAD councillor from Ward 55 Aruna Arora, her husband Manoj Arora and SAD councillor from Ward 54 Narinder Kaur are likely to rejoin the Congress in a few days. Having remained a staunch supporter of Punjab
Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President Mohinder Singh Kaypee, Manoj Arora left the Congress and joined the SAD before the last MC elections as his wife Aruna had been denied the Congress ticket.

His comeback to the Congress was already expected, especially after the Congress high command fielded Kaypee as its candidate from the Jalandhar (Reserved) seat.

When contacted, Manoj confirmed the reports of his and Aruna Arora’s rejoining the Congress in the coming days. Giving reasons for his decision of leaving the SAD, Manoj told The Tribune they had thought they would develop the areas falling under Ward 55 but no one cared for them in the SAD.

He said SAD chief Sukhbir Badal had assured them in their meeting soon after his wife’s election that he would arrange funds for the development of their areas if they submitted them an estimate for the same. But they could not meet Sukhbir Singh after that.

There were several unapproved localities falling in Ward 55 and for the development in these areas, funds were not provided to them, he added. Similarly, when contacted, Narinder Kaur, SAD councillor from Ward 54, claimed that she had not made her mind yet regarding coming back to the Congress.

However, she said some Congressmen had approached her to rejoin the Congress. On the other hand, Congress sources said both the SAD councillors and Manoj Arora may rejoin the party on Monday.

Meanwhile, there were unconfirmed reports that SAD leader and Central Cooperative Bank MD Anil Dutta and independent councillor from Ward 35 Joginder Tony may also join the Congress. However, when contacted, Dutta denied the report.

Gurdaspur, March 29
Gurdaspur has a great potential for producing a huge quantity of vegetables, fruits and pulses, said Dr Baldev Singh Boarai, member, Punjab Agricultural University Board of Management, adding that all kind of help would be provided to the Regional Research Station here to boost research activities in this regard.

Speaking after inaugurating the kisan mela organised by the university here, he said research and extension activities would be strengthened here to address the specific needs of the region.

He said the university had decided to organise special programmes to mark the centenary celebrations of agriculture research at Gurdaspur where it started in 1910.

Dr Manjit Singh Kang, Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University, said the centenary of agricultural research would be celebrated next year at Gurdaspur. Dr Kang said it was need of the hour to take the slogan of “save environment, save Punjab” to each and every corner of the state to make people aware of the environmental degradations.

Dr Kang said global warming resulting in melting of glaciers would bring drastic changes in the climate.

He called upon the farmers to be cautious of the impeding danger and advised them to use the resources wisely.

Officiating Director of Extension Education Dr Daljit Singh Dhillon said Punjab farmers saved a lot of water by transplanting paddy after June 15 last year. He said farmers should take a pledge to transplant the paddy only after June 20 which would go a long way to save water.

Advising the farmers to sow only the university recommended varieties, Dr G.S. Gosal, Additional Director of Research (Agriculture), said till date the university released around 580 varieties of different crops for the state farmers

Jalandhar, March 29
The incidents of three murders in as many days have sent the alarm bells ringing in the district, thus putting a question mark on the functioning of the police. The murders have not only created an atmosphere of panic among the residents but also caused insecurity in general public, especially elderly persons residing alone.

The recovery of the mutilated body of an elderly woman from her house in Gurunanapura area this morning has exposed chinks in the security of elderly persons.

The decomposed body of Pritam Kaur (60) was found from her house this morning. Both the hands of the woman were found tied around her back and a piece of cloth on the neck.

The incident came to light when Paramjit Kaur, daughter of the deceased, reached her parental house and found her mother’s body in a petrified condition. Paramjit Kaur, along with her husband Surjit Singh from Amritsar, reached the house to know about the well being of Pritam Kaur after getting no response to their phone calls.

The police claimed that Pritam Kaur was staying alone for quite some time after her three sons left for Canada. The assailants might have looted her valuables before strangling her.

Meanwhile, a case under section 460 of the IPC has been registered against unidentified assailants on the complaint of Surjit Singh at police station Division No 8 in this contest.

In another incident, a Nepali domestic help was found murdered adjacent to the Lahornangal level crossing in Urban Estate Phase-II on Saturday morning. The deceased was identified by his father Dil Bahadur as Prakash Bahadur.

Eyewitnesses revealed that there were injury marks on the neck and the head of Prakash. The deceased was a domestic help in a house in Housing Board Colony and had gone outside on Friday night but had not returned.

The shocking murder of head constable Bhupinder Singh and that too inside the high-security PAP Complex has raised many eyebrows. A resident of Gurdaspur, Bhupinder Singh of 27th Battalion of the PAP, was found murdered in his official accommodation in PAP Complex on Friday. The police has failed to make any headway in the murder even after three days of the incident.

Jalandhar SSP R.K. Jaiswal, however, claimed that the murder cases would be solved in a day or two. “We are working on different theories to solve the cases as soon as possible. Certain suspects have been rounded up for getting clues in the incidents,” he said.
