Ice rink leaves state govt cold
Dehradun, March 29 The Doon Ice Carnival that was scheduled to be held at the venue in May this year has been postponed. The ice rink will be inside a (80mts x 40mts) multipurpose indoor stadium, where other games like basketball, volleyball, table tennis, weightlifting, judo, wrestling and gymnastics will also be played. The electricity expenses of running the skating rink is expected to be Rs 1 crore per month with per day expenses of using the rink about Rs 60,000. To meet the everyday electricity expenses of running the rink, there should be about 100 students using the rink with every person paying Rs 100 per hour and the rink should be used for at least 10 to 12 hours everyday. President of the Winter Games Federation of India, SS Pangtey, said:
“In view of the running expenses, the government is thinking of outsourcing the project to a client after the SAF winter games scheduled for December this year”. Despite this near-impossible task of meeting the expenses, State Winter Games Association president Brig SS Patwal (retd) feels it a possible to meet the daily expenses of the rink. He believes
that if the government was to give the sports association the right “It will not be impossible to meet the expenses of the rink. Dehradun, which has He further said: “The association’s main object is to prepare 30-40 good ice skating players, who will participate in competitions held in other countries. This in turn will attract players from foreign countries.” There are other hindrances to the project as well. The pace at which construction work is under way is a cause for concern. The work was to be completed in February.
Patwal said: “The delay is because of lack of knowledge on the kind of technical assistance required for construction of a rink. We don’t have the infrastructure to construct such a rink. Therefore, we have to take the expertise of the foreign country for the construction of the rink, which is why the delay.” He said recently, the Doon Ice Carnival, that was to be held at Maharana Pratap Sports College, was postponed because the work at the site was not completed. He denied that lack of funds was the reason behind the delay. Similarly, the work at Auli, another venue of the SAF Winter Games, is still lingering as work on the installation of snowgun machine is not over. It is a known fact that at least six inches of snow is a minimum requirement for skiing. The snowgun machine will be handy in preparing snow at Auli if there is deficit snow in any season. For the snowgun to function, an artificial lake of 25 lakh cusecs capacity has been prepared where water will be collected, which will be used for preparing snow. Construction of a hall to be used for running the machine is underway at Auli. The snow made by the gun in the winter months lasts about a month whereas it lasts only for a week when the weather gets a little warmer. In case of Uttarakhand, snowgun will be functional from November to March or at the most the month of April. The rest of the years, the temperature is too high for the snowgun to function. Recently, the Nanda Devi Internation Skiing Carnival that was to be organised at Auli was cancelled. Approaching elections were stated to be the reason behind that cancellation of the event. Initially, a fund amounting to Rs 50 crore was issued by the central government for hosting the SAF Winter Games at two venues, Dehradun and Auli in Chamoli district, where skiing competitions were to be held. The construction at both places has been on. The budget was increased to Rs 102 crore, which had now reached Rs 110 crore, said
Patwal. The delay in construction could delay the trial run of the newly created infrastructure before the proposed SAF Winter Games in December. |
‘Mussadi Lal’ steps on purohits’ toes
Haridwar, March 29 Pankaj Kapoor and his crew members of television serial “Office Office” shot some episodes in the city. Later, following opposition by purohits, the shooting schedule was disrupted. They objected to commercialisation of rituals being shown in the serial.
Ganga Sabha general secretary said the unit was giving a wrong depiction of the “purohits”. The director of the serial pacified them, assuring that certain scenes would be deleted and the serial in no way would harm the image of the purohits. The veteran thespian and theatre artiste was all praise for the crowd.
Pankaj Kapoor has bagged two national awards for his stellar performance in the films “Ek Doctor Ki Maut” and “Maqbool”. He has played roles in Oscar-winning “Gandhi”, “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron”, ”Chameli Ki Shaadi” and “Jalwa” Kapoor said theatre is essential for an actors’ growth and he was happy with the way the Indian cinema was growing. On his son Shahid Kapoors’ film career, he said it was shaping up. “Apart from being a good dancer, he is also a good human being,” he said. On the serial “Office Office” and its new version “Naya Office Office”, Pankaj plays the prime character of “Mussadi Lal”. It’s a simple comedy which touches the heart of the common man. ‘Udaan’ girl on Doon visit
Dehradun, March 29 Television serial ‘Udaan’, which was telecast on Doordarshan in 1992, had made Kavita Chaudhary, the protagonist, into a star. She is in the city on vacation and is staying with her sister Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, a former director-general of police, Uttarakhand, the first woman police officer to head a state police. Kavita Chaudhary, prior to directing and acting in ‘Udaan’, was associated with theatre. “Udaan”, a 32-episode serial in the early 90’s with the backdrop of police services, was a massive hit. It was successful in highlighting the loopholes in the administrative system and the role of a bold police woman played by Kavita encouraged people to discuss issues of empowerment of women. "Before Udaan, I was doing theatre in Delhi. But as I had an administrative background at home, I thought of giving the people an idea about administrative problems and a way to solve them. As I had a team of good actors like Vikram Gokhale, Shekhar Kapoor and others, we managed to keep people glued to TV sets and even encouraged women empowerment,” said Kavita Chaudhary. Post-Udaan, Kavita, for the past 16-17 years, was busy directing advertisement films, short films and presently she is working on a film called ‘Karaar’, a love story. She takes deep interest in doing her homework and believes in churning out an issue which is authentic and can appeal to the masses. “The script of my movie is ready. As it is a big budget commercial film, I am still left with finalising the cast. I, simultaneously, am also working on its English translation” said Kavita Chaudhary. After Udaan, she got so engrossed in familiarising herself with the nuances of film-making that completely devoted her time to writing and direction. “After Udaan, I acted in a very few ads. As I felt that I had the vision to direct a movie, I thought of making a big budget film,” said Kavita. “It is a must for a director to know what he wants out of the movie. Be it any genre, understanding the mindset of the imperative,” she said. “If more women join the field of direction, then women who have the skills and the passion will be able to come out of their shells,” feels Kavita. Bollywood is a male-dominated industry. The ratio of women, particularly as directors, is far too less compared to men. Kavita expressed happiness that present-day directors are dealing with off-beat subjects. “I am very happy with the work of the new-age progressive directors who are offering people variety,” she said. |
