LS polls: State CPI (M) to contest one seat only
Bathinda, February 12 Charan Singh Virdi, acting secretary of the state unit, informed TNS here today that the decision was reached at after a meeting of the state committee of the party at Chandigarh. Senior member Balbir Singh Jadla had chaired the meeting, he added. Virdi said the state unit in line with the all India election lines of the party would work for defeating both the Akali-BJP alliance and the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls in order to make a room for formation of an alternate non-BJP, non-Congress government at the Centre based upon the Left, democratic and secular principles. He said it had been decided that the party would only contest one out of the 13 seats in Punjab and would extend support to like-minded secular and democratic parties on other seats. Virdi said the state committee termed the support price of Rs 1,080 per quintal for wheat as declared by the Central government as disadvantageous to the farmers. He also demanded from the Punjab government to implement the report of the Fifth Pay Commission immediately. Virdi informed that the CPI (M) would formally start its election campaign by organising public rallies at Nawanshahar on February 14 and at Balachaur on February 28, both of which fall in the Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha constituency.
