Gurdaspur, December 29
Two policemen, both brothers, and their two friends killed a youth and seriously injured two others by attacking them with sharp-edged weapons late last night at Chaiya village, 3 km from here, late last night.

While one policemen, who was working as a naib in the district courts here and identified as Baldev Raj, and his friend Rakesh Kumar, alias Babu, have been arrested by the police, the two other accused, Joginder Pal, brother of Baldev Raj, who has also been working as a naib in the district court complex here, and Madan Lal, are yet to be arrested.

Police sources said the youth, who had been done to death by the four accused, had been identified as Ajay Kumar. The other two youths, who were friends of the deceased and had been battling for their lives in the local civil hospital and Amritsar-based hospital had been identified as Bodh Raj and Jatinder Pal.

The sources added that the accused attacked the youths with sharp-edged weapons inflicting multiple injuries on them. The three were rushed to the local civil hospital by a resident of Chaiya village.

While Ajay Kumar succumbed to his injuries within half an hour after he was shifted to the civil hospital, Jatinder Pal was shifted to Amritsar-based hospital as his condition was critical. Bodh Raj was given treatment at the local civil
hospital. The condition of both the injured was stated to be serious.

After getting the information about this crime, senior police officials, including SP(D) Balbir Singh Khaira, DSP Jasdeep Singh and SHO, Sadar police station, reached the spot. Police parties had been pressed into service to arrest the other two accused who had absconded after committing the crime.

The police sources said Madan Lal, one of the accused, had been harbouring animosity against Ajay Kumar for the past two months or so. The main reason for the animosity was that Madan Lal was agitated over the fact that once he saw his sister talking to a cousin of Ajay Kumar when he came to Chaiya village and lived for sometime with Ajay Kumar.

Last night, the accused first came to the house of Ajay Kumar and started hurling abuses when Ajay Kumar was not present there. When Ajay Kumar came to know about this, he along with his parents went to the house of Madan Lal. But he found Joginder Pal, Baldev Raj, Madan Lal and Rakesh Kumar on the way. When Ajay Kumar approached them, he was attacked with sharp-edged weapon. His friends, Jatinder Pal and Bodh Raj, who rushed to the spot to save him, were also attacked with sharp-edged weapons.

After this, the accused fled away from the spot. A case has been registered under sections 302, 324 and 34 of the IPC at Sadar police station.

Jalandhar, December 29
As many as 170 government school students from the district have cleared the national means-cum-merit scholarship examination.

The meritorious students would be awarded a scholarship of Rs 500 each till class XII. The scholarship is meant for the students of government school, government aided schools and local bodies schools.

The exam was conducted by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Punjab, on August 10. Revealing this, DEO (secondary), Harinder Sahni said the exam would further enhance the academic capability of the students in the higher classes. “Each student will be able to avail himself of a financial benefit of Rs 24,000 each for a period of four years. As many students come from financially weaker sections of the society, therefore this will help in bridging the social gap as well,” he said.

And to continue with the same excellence in higher classes as well the SCERT had put a condition on their performance.

The meritorious students of this exam would have to achieve at least 55 per cent marks in class IX, 60 per cent in class X and 55 per cent marks in class XI.

“In case the student fails to meet these standards, the scholarship will be scrapped. But we are hopeful that these parameters will motivate the students to continue with the same excellence in education.

“And this in turn will help the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) in improving the academic results of higher classes in the years to come,” added Sahni.
