Dy speaker poll against democracy: Congress
Dehradun, December 23 A week earlier, the party had also successfully staged a “Jail Bharo Andolan” against the state BJP government. Addressing the gathering of party workers, Yashpal Arya asserted that the BJP by appointing its legislator as deputy speaker has acted in a most undemocratic manner. “The post of deputy speaker is of the Opposition but by appointing its party legislator, the BJP has only belittled this norm of parliamentary democracy,” he said. Referring to the recent police lathicharge on “shiksha mitras” outside the state Assembly, he said the ruling party has decided to resort to the use of force only to check people from raising their genuine concerns. “The peacefully protesting shiksha mitras were lathicharged despite the least of provocation,” he said adding that the act only reflected the oppressive mindset of the BJP. The Congress leader also accused the ruling party of adopting a step-motherly attitude towards farmers and state government employees. He said the misdeeds of the ruling state BJP government today stands exposed as the people of the state were now in a mood to teach them a lesson in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Congress state media in charge Suryakant Dhasmana said the BJP was least sensitive towards the issues of farmers, teachers and the state government employees. He accused the ruling party of being undemocratic both in terms of mindset and approach. He said the Congress would continue to work for the betterment of the people and raise issues linked to their welfare. Former minister Hira Singh Bisht raised the issue of employees working with various state corporations asserting that the delay in providing Sixth Pay Commission benefits to them was unjust. He also asked the BJP to spell out its stand vis-à-vis permanent capital for Uttarakhand. “The Dixit commission has submitted its report and now it is for the state government to come out with a stand over the issue,” Bisht said. Ajay Sonkar, an Independent councillor, along with his supporters joined the Congress at the venue. Former ministers Mantri Prasad Naithani, Navprabhat and Sadhu Ram and Congress councillors Ashok Verma were prominent participants in the dharna. The protesters also resorted to large-scale anti-BJP and anti-Chief Minister sloganeering. Dharnas were also staged at district headquarters in other parts of the state. |

Anti-encroachment drive: Mayor assaulted
Dehradun, December 23 Acting on the complaints of the people, DMC had demolished some encroachments in Brahmawala Khala area on the outskirts of Dehradun a few days back. Few of those affected, led by a lawyer identified as Suman, reached the MC office this morning and resented the corporation’s action, which led to an altercation between the Mayor and the visitors. When the situation went out of hand, the municipal authorities were forced to seek police intervention. The lawyer was later arrested. Meanwhile, the Dehradun Bar Association came to the rescue of the apprehended lawyer. But the corporation resisted any pressure asserting that the behaviour of the lawyer was beyond tolerance. The matter was finally resolved in the evening as talks were held between the members of Dehradun Bar Association and the MC officials at the Mayor’s office. After a written letter of apology, the arrested lawyer was released. Notably, this is not the first time that a standoff has taken place between the lawyers and councillors. Only more than a month back, a clash between supporters of lawyers and councilors had led to stir-like situation in both the MC and the bar. However, the situation was somehow diffused. |
