Security stepped up in Doon
Dehradun, November 30 After convening a series of meetings with senior police officials, Dehradun SSP Amit Kumar Sinha has issued several guidelines to police officials posted at various police stations and police pickets in the city. Beat constables have been directed to keep details about educational institutions/important institutions/hotels falling in their respective jurisdiction. Besides, beat constables have also been asked to keep a detailed record of the security scheme of important institutions in their areas. The cops have been further asked to keep a tab on the persons who stay in hotels for a long time. The SSP has also issued directions to all cyber café owners in the city to ensure that ‘log in’ and ‘log out’ registers are maintained properly. In the wake of increased terrorist activities and hoax mails, some of the state governments across India had already ordered cyber café owners to confirm identity of visitors through identity cards besides maintaining a detailed register of them. “We will also enforce these conditions and will take
necessary action against those found violating orders,” said Sinha. Senior cops disclosed that during the meeting with hotel owners, it came to light that majority of the hoteliers were not aware about the beat officers of their respective areas. “This implies that beat constables have so far not established any contact with the hotel owners/officials,” stated the SSP, while adding that they had conveyed to the beat constables to ensure proper interaction with the hoteliers, so that in the case of any exigency, hotel owners could immediately establish contact with the cops. Besides, the police officials have also asked the owners of the hotels to install CCTVs at the entrance and the
reception. In another security measure, the SSP has directed the cops to meet the owners of the bicycle shops, second-hand car dealers and auto parts shops and tell them to immediately inform the police, in case they came across any buyer, who appears to be suspicious in nature. Beat officers have also been instructed to keep a record of the factory workers, brick kiln labourers, mason, junk dealers etc in their respective areas. According to senior police officials, a 10-day deadline has been given to the beat officers for compliance of all the directions issued to them. |

Illegal use of domestic cylinders on the rise
Haridwar, November 30 The city has been reeling under shortage of cylinders for domestic use for quite some time now. The problem has been compounded by less supply of cylinders by the petroleum companies as compared to demand. In Haridwar, there are five gas agencies that have about 70,000 consumer connections. But since the supply is considerably less, consumers have to wait in long queues to secure a cylinder. Gas agency officials attribute the scarcity to the rise in prices of petroleum products worldwide. Meanwhile, in the recent raid conducted on the orders of district magistrate Shailesh Bagoli by three different teams, 58 cylinders were seized from Haridwar and Roorkee. The domestic cooking gas (LPG) cylinder weighs 14.2 kg while the commercial cylinder weighs 19 kg. In the absence of any punitive action, commercial establishments like hotels and restaurants use domestic cylinders. “Such raids will be carried out on regular basis and will help in keeping a tab on the illegal users. The shortage of LPG cylinders will also be looked after,” said Haridwar district supply officer P.S. Pangti. However, the point is whether those caught will be punished and how effective the raids would be when every second hotel and dhaba owner uses a domestic LPG cylinder. “As a senior citizen it’s a laborious task securing a cylinder. Despite booking a month ago, the gas agency hasn’t delivered it despite repeated complaints,” said Anita Manchanda, a resident of Srinath Nagar. |

The president of the Balbhadra Khalanga Vikas Samiti Ram Singh Thapa said, “With efforts of our Samiti, a metalled road from Dehradun upto Kaliga Fort has been made. The work of the memorial being constructed at the Khalanga Fort is also near completion.” The Khalanga-Nalapani war memorial was constructed to commemorate the inspiring leadership and indomitable courage of 35 years old Gorkha Commander (General) Balbhadra Singh Thapa (Kanwar), under whose command a small force of 500-600 Gorkha soldiers fought fiercely against British force.
The battle, which got underway on October 24, 1814 lasted for over 30 days and many Gorkha soldiers, women and children, made supreme sacrifices and achieved martyrdom. Thapa further informed that twin memorials are located on Sahastradhara Road, Dehradun and there maintenance is under Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). He also informed that recently Uttarakhand government had issued a notification for keeping the Gorkha War Memorial at Khalanga under the care and maintenance of ASI, Dehradun and Department of Culture, Uttarakhand. “And now Balbhadra Khalanga Vikas Samiti Ram Singh Thapa organises Khalanga Festival to commemorate the Anglo Gorkha War, every year”, he added. |
