Misbehaviour with principal lands them in soup
Jalandhar, November 17
The incident took place on Saturday when Principal Dr Naresh Kumar Dhiman along with other staff members spotted these boys and some outsiders playing volleyball on the campus. On being stopped, the boys had an altercation with the principal and threatened him with dire consequences. According to college authorities, the boys tried to politicise the issue with the help of some outsiders today, but they managed to bring the situation under control. “These boys along with a group of outsiders elected Sanjay Jhangra as the students’ union president on Sunday. And to celebrate their success, they put up a tent in front of the college gate for the installation ceremony and displayed big banners regarding the same,” they added. However, the police was informed and as the cops arrived, the boys hurriedly packed up and disappeared. When contacted, the boys accuse the authorities of framing them. “The college authorities have slapped wrong charges on us. We never went against the rules. For no fault of mine, the principal slapped me in front of everyone on Saturday. And today when we gathered here for the installation ceremony, the authorities did not allow us to hold the function,” claimed Naim Khan. |

Final verdict on PTU vice-chancellor’s name today
Jalandhar, November 17 There is a buzz around it that the name will be finalised tomorrow positively and endorsed in an urgently called meeting of the board of governors scheduled on November 20, again at Chandigarh. Normally, the BOG is preceded by a meeting of the academic council but not this time. Even as principal secretary technical education Tejinder Kaur had said she had received nearly 25 applications for the post, a couple of names have been doing the rounds of late. The maximum people said an RSS-supported candidate who was earlier serving in Guru Nanak Dev University and is currently handling a top position in an affiliated college of the PTU in Amritsar stands the maximum chance. The BOG is scheduled to take another major decision tomorrow. After Lord Swraj Paul’s statement that the PTU-Caparo School of Manufacturing Technology in Kapurthala be handled either by him or by the PTU, a final verdict is yet to come. After Caparo group’s reluctance to continue with the arrangement,
several major industrial groups have sent their proposals to the university on running the campus in a joint arrangement but the PTU officials are adamant on carrying it
further on their own. “We currently are a non-teaching university. Teaching is a major component for any educational institute which we are lacking. It will be a golden opportunity for us to fill that lacuna,” pointed out a senior official of the university. A yet another official hinted, “Caparo school is just adjoining our new PTU building. We can appoint new staff and keep a direct watch on it. In addition, we will have students and faculty with us with whom we can always have a direct interaction. Their feedback will help us understand the problems faced by other colleges as well, thus helping us to administer them in a better way.” |

Vice-chairman of the Servants of the People Society Prof Virpartap Singh emphasised that martyrs were the treasure
of every nation and part of the history and students must know the country's background of freedom struggle and thus get inspiration from the sacrifices of them. |

India’s economic model better than US: LUB chief
Jalandhar, November 17 This was stated by Sushil Gupta, national president of Laghu Udyog Bharti ( LUB), while addressing mediapersons here on Monday. “We have all seen the ills of the western model that has failed and brought an economic meltdown across the globe. In this scenario, it becomes imperative to follow and develop our own programmes and policies,” he pointed out. The effects of meltdown will be witnessed in our country and the real picture would emerge after the parliamentary polls as the government at the moment is presenting a rosy picture before the public, he added. Alleging that a cartel of traders, bureaucrats and politicians was active behind the recent hike in the steel prices, he said certain PSUs and private parties have hiked steel prices by Rs 7- 9 a kg when the demand had fallen worldwide. This lobby has put pressure on the government to levy an import duty so that their products continue to sell in the domestic market, he said. “Same is the situation with plastic polymers,” he added. Gupta said the government should issue certain guidelines to ensure marketing support to micro and SSI units under the MSME Act and make NSIC as the nodal agency. “These guidelines should be followed by all the states and PSUs. Moreover, the labour laws should also be simplified. The need of the hour was to introduce one law for direct tax,” he added. |

Pathankot, November 17 Davinder Kumar of the VHP warned the Centre that the act of implicating Hindu leaders on flimsy grounds would result in serious consequences. He said the Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) of Mumbai had been targeting the Hindu leaders at the behest of the Congress and the UPA government. Hindus would not remain mute spectators on the issue and would give a countrywide call to agitate against the high-handedness of the Congress-led UPA government, he added — OC |

City resident drags admn to court
Jalandhar, November 17 In his complaint, Sunil Walia, a resident of Silver Heights Apartments here, said that he had applied for fancy number PB-08-BE-0031 and deposited the fee of Rs 1,500 with the DTO. He said he made a bid to the tune of Rs 9,500 in an auction of numbers held in May 19 this year. He said that his was the second highest bid as one Sukhdev Singh Aulakh was declared the highest bidder at Rs 10,500. He said that since Aulakh failed to deposit the papers for registration of his new vehicle within the stipulated period, the number should have been allotted to him as per rules. He said that he submitted the papers along with the balance payment with the Sukhmani Society for Citizen Services, Suvidha Centre, on July 16. He said he was told that he could collect his RC on August 5. The complainant said on August 5, he was told that it was not ready and he could collect it on August 12 with the date extended on his slip. On August 12, he was asked to come on August 14. Once again, he was asked to come after 15 days but this time the date was not extended on his slip by the authorities concerned as in previous rounds, despite a request by the complainant. Walia said that on September 12, he received a letter in which he was told that the same number could not be allotted to him because it had already been allotted to Aulakh as he had deposited the fee prior to him. He said that in a letter sent earlier it had been stated that the fancy number was allotted to the complainant in the event of the highest bidder failing to comply with the conditions. He said he was wondering that the same number had been allotted to Aulakh without specifying any reason for the same. He said he reached the DTO office and was told that there were orders in this regard from the higher authorities and he could not do anything in the matter. Walia has added that the Sukhmani Society could accept only one file with regard to a given number but in his case, two filed had been accepted. He said that he had even moved an RTI application on September 12 to the divisional commissioner, Jalandhar, seeking information as to how many files could be submitted for a single number and how many were submitted for taking fancy number PB-08-BE-0031. He said that he had received no reply on the matter till date. Finally, he said he served a legal notice on the DC and the DTO calling upon them not to issue the fancy number till the issue was resolved. He said the opposite parties were pressurising him to bid for some other number and stop staking claim to the fancy number in question. The complainant had asked for allotment of number to him along with a compensation of Rs 50,000 for causing mental harassment
and Rs 11,000 on account of legal expenses. |
