Fashion designer Anand Jon convicted of sexual assault
Anand Jon has dressed celebrities across America in his creations. Now the Indian-born designer faces the prospect of donning an unimpressive prison jumpsuit, probably for the rest of his life.
Jon was convicted on Thursday of sexually assaulting seven girls and women after luring them to Los Angeles with promises of glamorous modeling assignments. A California jury debated for two weeks before pronouncing Jon guilty of 14 felonies, including forcible rape, and two
misdemeanours. Officials say his victims ranged in age from 14 to 21. Jon (34) faces a mandatory life sentence. He must serve 67 years before he is eligible for parole, which means he will probably spend the rest of his life in the prison. Jon faces similar charges in New York, where nine women have accused him of improper conduct. He is also under investigation in Texas and Massachusetts. “The ones that we know of are probably the tip of the iceberg of what truly exists,” prosecutor Frances Young said outside the court after the verdicts were read. Jon’s attorneys maintain he is innocent. Defense attorney Larry Levine told mediapersons, “This case is not over by a long shot… for now, we are disappointed.” He said his client would appeal the verdict. Prosecutors described Jon as a “pedophile masquerading as a fashion designer.” “This jury today has sent a message that our communities will not tolerate serial rapists and child molesters like Anand Jon,” Young said. “They will be held accountable, and the victims will get justice.” Jon trained at the prestigious Parsons the New School for Design in New York and starred as a guest designer on the reality television show ‘America’s Next Top Model.’ In December 2006, Newsweek magazine featured him on a list of people to watch in 2007. Ironically, Jon’s troubles began in 2007. In March of that year Beverly Hills police arrested Jon after a woman accused him of rape. Sentencing is set for January. |

Other Democrats reportedly in fray are John Kerry, Bill Richardson, and Tom Daschle. “She’s smart, she’s strong, she’s experienced, she’s a team player, she is usually pretty diplomatic, and she also brings some gender diversity to an Obama team” an unnamed Democrat said.

Duma passes Bill on prez term to 6 yrs
Moscow, November 14 The extension will not affect incumbent Dmitry Medvedev, who was elected in March. In his first address to the parliament on November 5 Medvedev had proposed to ‘correct’ the Constitution by extending the presidential term by two years and the state Duma’s (Lower House) term by one year to five years. The bill opposed by the Communist Party was approved in the first reading by over 86 per cent votes of the 450 Lower House. The bill today approved by the Duma would have to go through two more readings before it is sent to the Federation Council (upper house) for approval before it is signed into law by Medvedev. — PTI |
