Gagan leads in Samarvir Sahi Golf
Chandigarh, November 11 Gagan, who heads the LG Order of Merit and is just back after a good showing in the Eisenhower Trophy, started with a bogey-free front nine. He bogeyed the very first hole on the back nine. But then he steadied with birdies on the 13th, 16th and 18th to card a two under par 70, two strokes ahead of the chasing pack. Gagan said: "The course was tight, but there was no wind. Pin placements near the front edge helped me card an under par round." Rashid Khan, basking under the glory of two wins in a row on the LG Amateur Tour, was eager to make it a hat-trick of triumphs. But things did not shape well as he started with a swollen left thumb from the 10th hole. A double-bogey on the second and string of three bogeys saw him five over after eight holes. A birdie on the ninth made it four over par 40 at the turn. The return nine saw him get his act together as he shot four birdies in a flawless four under par 32 to be par 72, just two strokes behind the leader. Kanishk Madan and Tarun Ghogale were tied with Rashid for the second place at 72 after the first round. The best show by a Chandigarh golfer was by Aman Guron who played a one over par 73 and was tied fifth with Angad Cheema and Karan
Vasudeva. Chandigarh's Harjinder Singh Kang, the defending champion of the LG Samarvir Sahi Amateur, and Manav Das of Ambala shot a two over par 74, but were still in contention with three more rounds left to be played. As many as ten players were within four shots of the lead. Gagan will have to play really well to hold on to his lead and move ahead of the pack. The greens were playing really fast and most of the players seemed to be struggling on the greens. Moin
Malak, who recently won the title of the 'Best Amateur' at the Indian Open, had a tough outing, carding a round of ten over par and in danger of missing the cut. Rahul Bajaj, a regular name on the leader board on the national tour, had to pull out because of a sprained back and will not be taking any further part in the tournament. Scores: 1 Gagan Verma (70); 2 Rashid Khan, Tarun
Ghogale, Kanishk Madan (72); 5 Karan Vasudeva, Angad Cheema, Aman Guron (73); 8 Abhishek Jha, Manav Das, H. S. Kang, Abhinav Lohan (74). |
