MC demolishes encroachment by multiplex
Amritsar, November 11 Corporation men reached the spot with a bulldozer this noon as they were armed with orders to clear the encroachment on the road, which has taken over almost 40 feet of the road. The construction company had constructed a temporary barricaded wall of tin plates and taken over big chunk of busy Mall Road much to the inconvenience of the public and the vehicular traffic. The corporation had given permission to the construction company for two years to complete the project and use the road for parking their construction material and other equipment and it is learnt that the permission of two years had lapsed, which forced the corporation to take this action. The owner of the building protested and urged the corporation authorities that they should be lenient in using the bulldozer as it had completed damaged the tin wall, iron girders, besides the belongings of the poor labourers whose cycles were also damaged. Suresh Sharma, assistant town planner, said they received orders from higher officers to demolish the encroachment, which had taken over a big area. He said the owner had parked their building material and other items on the road outside the temporary tin wall and was hampering the moment of traffic on the busy road. Sharma asked the owner of the complex to lift the building material lying on the road and also shift the tin wall. Jatinder Singh, owner of the mall, said the corporation had not given any prior information or notice and only informed him to remove the construction material, which was complied with accordingly. |

Amritsar, November 11 In memorandums to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, AVM patron Charanjit Singh Gumtala said a chain of measures, which if taken in right earnest by the government, would make Rajasansi airport more viable and profitable for the airlines. It is demanded that the Amritsar airport being the only one on the Indo-Pak border and the city being of international religious, historical and tourist importance in spite of its small size should be exempted from landing/parking charges for at least five years on the pattern of SEZ, which should not be more than half of those being charged in metropolitan cities like Delhi. The cargo handling process at this airport should be computerised to speed up the clearing of the booked load and duty drawbacks as was done in Delhi. Meanwhile, Sai Mian Mir International Foundation president Harbhajan Singh Brar said all political parties, organisations and intellectuals should make joint efforts and rise above party lines and vested interests to save the Amritsar international airport. He said making Mohali an international airport, which would only benefit neighbouring states economically, was a bad move and hurt the people of Punjab. He said a small state like Punjab could not bear the expenditure of two international airports. Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) general secretary Ram Singh, in statement issued here, alleged that it was a conspiracy by the state and central governments to close down the international airport which would not be tolerated. |
Notorious robber among 5 held, stolen bikes recovered
Amritsar, November 11 The district police chief SSP Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh said the police received secret information that the gang would strike in Gwal Mandi. A raid was
conducted and the accused were nabbed. The investigation revealed that Ranjit Singh was a notorious robber who has earlier been arrested in more than a dozen cases of robbery and theft. Out of three vehicles recovered from them, two were stolen from Ludhiana. A case under section 379, 399, 411, 402, 148 and 149 IPC was
registered at civil line police station here. Meanwhile, Galliara police arrested a woman pickpocket Sukhwinder Kaur and recovered a purse containing Rs 2,400 and registered a case in this regard. In another case, the police nabbed Sandeep Singh, resident of Maqboolpura Mehta Road and recovered 35 grams charas from him. He was caught from an underconstruction building on Mehta Road. Jagdeep Singh of Ranjit Avenue and Manpreet Singh of Kashmir Avenue were arrested with 13 gm smack and 30 gm narcotic powder, respectively. |
Suchi Sanjh: A tale of platonic love
Amritsar, November 11 Produced by Theatre Persons, Amritsar, an organisation of Punjabi theatre artistes, headed by Hardip Gill and his wife Anita Devgan, the play depicts the agony of the family of a man
who remarries an English woman to settle in the UK. However, when the deserted wife of the youth, Banso, along with her children, reaches England without informing her husband, it comes as a great shock for her. The husband disappears after leaving his family in a secluded house. He also moves to another house so that his family from Punjab may not locate him again. However, Karnail Singh, an ex-serviceman, gives food and shelter to the family without expecting anything in return from it. This “Suchi Sanjh” of Karnail Singh with Banso continues till his death. However, a great surprise is in store for Banso. After Karnail’s death she learns that he has pledged his entire property in her name. The play reaches its climax when Banso’s British daughter-in-law replaces the old “Rajai” (quilt) given by Karnail Singh to her with a new blanket without knowing that Banso’s emotions are so firmly attached to it. After bitterness in the family due to the sudden change in quilt, Banso tells her son and daughter-in-law to use this quilt as a coffin at the time of her death. The acting of Hardip Gill and his wife Anita and son mesmerised the audience leaving an indelible impression on their minds. The chief guest, Wg Cdr Sahni and Shammi Sareen presented gifts to kids who earned a lot of applause from the audience for their performance. |
Spotlight on Hussain
Amritsar, November 11 The role of Hussain’s wife Fazila was played by Juhi Babbar, daughter of actor and parliamentarian Raj Babbar. The play showed a painter from a small village of Maharashtra rising above all prejudices and diversities in his life through the medium of his art. The two-hour performance portrayed different shades of the life of the legendary painter. Written by Varun Gautam, the play’s cast includes TV actor Anoop Soni, Juhi Babbar and Tom Alter, supported by a team of 25 Ekjute artistes. The music of the play has been composed by Kuldip Singh, while the sets were conceptualised by Hussain himself. |

Tarn Taran, November 11 Vigilance DSP Ashok Kumar told newsmen that the patwari took the bribe for effecting intqal of the farmer’s land in the revenue records. A case under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered. In another case, additional sessions judge H.S. Dhaliwal has sentenced a JE of the PSEB to one and a half years’ imprisonment and fined Rs 3,000 in corruption case. The case was registered by the VB on April 21, 2004. |
100 new homoeopathic dispensaries for Punjab
Amritsar, November 11 This was disclosed by health and family welfare minister Prof Laxmi Kanta Chawla during the inauguration of XXI national congress of homoeopathy at Guru Nanak Dev University on November 8. She said the government was treating the homoeopathy system of medicine at par with allopathic, ayurveda and other alternative system of medicines. Avinash Rai Khanna, member parliament, was guest of honour. Various resource persons deliberated on topics like happy mother-healthy child, lifestyle disorders and national health programme. |

Accenture workshop
Sixty students of the GND varsity participated in a three-day workshop on “Supply chain management” organised by Accenture, a Mumbai-based multinational IT company
on the university campus here on Tuesday. The workshop was organised under the aegis of the placement unit of the university
to nurture the young talent and to provide current knowledge on the industry’s hot-technologies for future software engineers by sharing the relevant concept and current industry practices with them. Professor in charge (public relations) of the university Parminder Singh presided over the concluding ceremony of the workshop and distributed certificates among the student-participants and encouraged them to attend similar workshops as and when opportunity arose. Director (placement) Sukhdev Singh said as many as 60 students of pre-final year, selected on the basis of their merit from all the three campuses of university at Amritsar, Jalandhar and Gurdaspur, participated in the workshop. The interactive learning sessions were carried out by officials from Accenture through lectures, quiz,

Face-to-face programme
On the second day of the Punjabi week celebrations, a face-to-face programme was organised by the School of Punjabi Studies of Guru Nanak Dev University with noted Punjabi writer Bachint Kaur here on Tuesday. The faculty members and students of the school asked many questions regarding her creative process to which she replied to their satisfaction. She emphasised that there was a close relationship between the author and her writings. She lamented that the condition of women in the Indian society was not very good. She said the she received more than 13,000 letters after the publication of her autobiography “Pagdandian”. |

Tributes paid to writer Kaang
Amritsar, November 11 Sahit Vichar Kendra senior
vice-president Darshan Dard said the association was contemplating institution an
award in Dr Kaang’s name. Various writers, while addressing the gathering, said the writer’s death had jolted Punjabi literary world. “Dr Kaang was known for creating a new kind of genre in Punjabi - the short lyrical essay. With more than 80 books to his credit, the man’s contribution to the Punjabi literature is tremendous,” they added. Amarjit Singh Kaang said his brother was a noble soul, besides being a great critic and writer. “The void created by his death is difficult to fill,” he said. Dr Kaang’s first literary work “Sahit Chintan” appeared in 1952 which established him as a social thinker and literary critic. He came out with a series of books and created a stir in the Punjabi literary arena. Some of his important works include “Badlan De Rang”, “Pathar Liken”, “Pakkian Ittan”, “Sirnave Mitra De” and “Dudh
De Dariya”. His lyrical essay prowess is clearly visible in “Harmandar Udas Hai”, “Naad Anahad”, “Nadi Kinare Pyasa Manukh” and “Harmandar Muskuranda Hai”. The ace Punjabi critic started his career as a teacher at Barjindra College, Faridkot, from where he retired in 1995. Dr Kaang remained editor of Khalsa Samachar from 1951 to 1954, besides Lau, Amar Kahania
and Vanangi. Among others who attended the bhog ceremony were former pro-vice-chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University Dr Satinder Singh, professor and head of department of Punjabi Dr Dharam Singh, professor and head of academic staff college of the university Dr Harbhajan Singh Bhatia and CPI district secretary Amarjit Singh Asal. |
