Car falls into Bist Doab canal, no one hurt
Ropar, October 19 They were going from Shimla, via Chandigarh, to Jalandhar. The occupants have been identified as Upasna Thakur and her sister Geetanjali Thakur from Shimla, Sushant Kumar and Sooraj Ved from Shimla and Amandeep Singh from Bathinda. They reached Asron area around 10 pm. Suddenly the youth driving the Ford Fiesta (HP 63 A 1200) car lost control over the vehicle and it crashed into the railing of the bridge over the Bist Doab canal. A portion of the railing was already broken and the car passed through it and landed into the canal below with a loud thud. The accident took place near the Asron police post, where two cops were on duty. By the time the police officials reached near the vehicle in the water, the occupants had emerged from the car. They were drenched and were standing near the flight of steps that led into water. None of them had sustained any injury. The windshield and right mirror of the
car was damaged in the accident. Police officials said that all of them had refused to lodge a complaint about the incident. The car was towed out of the waters this morning using a crane. According to the police, all the five youngsters were between 20 and 25. Two of them were students of MBA studying
at Shimla. They were going towards Haveli restaurant in Jalandhar on a weekend outing. This was for the first time they had come towards this area and were unaware of the geographical location of bridge over Bist Doab canal. And it was due to miscalculation of the location by the driver that they met with this accident. |

Gurta Gaddi Diwas spells remittance for 105 prisoners
Ropar, October 19 Around 38 prisoners have been shifted to Ropar Jail. These include 13 from Ludhaina Central Jail, five from Barnala Jail, four from Gurdaspur Jail, three from Nabha Jail, two from Borstal
Jail, Ludhiana, and one from Moga Jail. Prisoners remitted from sentence mainly include those who are accused in accident cases. Some cases are of attempt to murder as well. These prisoners have been awarded three to five years of imprisonment. “It will benefit only those inmates who are serving short sentences. Others lodged under life sentences will not get any kind of relaxation,” said the authorities. Also the Ropar Sub Jail is being augmented to a District Jail. Jails, tourism and cultural affairs cabinet minister, Hira Singh Gabria, will inaugurate the premises of the District Jail. The jail will be able accommodate as many as 500 inmates. It will house inmates from Ropar and Mohali districts. Presently, there are 275 inmates, including 250 men and 25 women. In absence of female staff at Ropar Jail, the female inmates are lodged at Patiala Jail. There are eight barracks, 40 cells and one-langar halls in the new premises and 25 barracks for female inmates. Jail has been shifted to sprawling 23 acres of land from its earlier location near old vegetable market in the area. Government has also sanctioned 80 posts. |

Maltreatment of inmates at de-addiction centres
Kharar, October 19 The DC had asked the SDM to prepare a detailed status report over the condition of inmates at the de-addiction centres following raids by the district administration officials on October 9. The report says the inmates are neither provided potable water nor toilet facility. Moreover, they have to cook food themselves in absence of permanent cooks. Surprisingly, these centres are also not concerned about the health of inmates as no doctor visits them regularly, reveals the report. It may be mentioned here that a three-member official team had raided all the five centres in Kharar on October 9 and found a number of shortcomings in their functioning. The de-addiction centres include those run by non-governmental organisations Disha Foundation and Jeevanjyot Foundation near Royal Palace on Landran road, Guru Kripa Foundation on Randhawa Road, Freedom Foundation on Jhungiyan road and Guru Mehar Foundation on Jhungiyan road. The report also reveals that these centres charge arbitrarily from the patients in the absence of set rules. |

Punjabi varsity to have ultra-modern auditorium
Patiala, October 19 Presiding over the fourth annual alumni meet of the varsity last evening, the V-C said the renovation work of the Guru Nanak Bhawan would start soon and would be completed within a year. He said varsity’s main library, having nearly six-lakh books, rare manuscripts and journals, will also be renovated and made centrally air-conditioned. Describing it as one of the largest university libraries in the country, Dr Jaspal Singh said that presently “it is the richest library in a poor state”. The nearly 1,000 rare manuscripts, which were getting nearer to the state of depredation with each passing day, are being digitised and laminated to be preserved forever for the use of future generation of teachers and scholars, he said. Body of MC staffer found
Ambala, October 19 The police has arrested three persons, including one woman in this regard. SP Sibash Kaviraj said the police had got a tip-off in this regard. He said one of the arrested persons belonged to Uttar Pardesh while two of them were residents of a village close to Ambala Cantt. According to information, on October 4, a woman came to taxi stand at Ambala City and asked Bhagh Singh to take her to USA Garden restaurant located near Panjokhra he did not turn back since then. His son who runs transport business had informed the police in this regard. A passerby noticed the body of Bhagh Singh near Handesra and informed the police. The police suspects that the accused had murdered the driver and took away the car. According to the police, the car was sold to a person in Budail village near Chandigarh. The police recovered the car from Budail. The police is interrogating the accused. It is not the first incident in the city. A few months back, two persons had hired a taxi from Ambala City taxi stand for Delhi and they managed to take away his taxi. |

Scooterist killed, cop hurt in accident
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 19 The incident took place this morning when traffic constable Rupinder Singh took lift from a scooterist to reach near the flyover for VIP duty. As soon as the scooterist reached near the flyover, a speeding Maruti Swift hit the scooter. While the constable received serious injuries the scooterist died on the spot. The constable was rushed to the PGI where his condition is now stated to be normal. Police officials said the constable received fractures on his thigh. The police has registered a case at the Sirhind police station against the driver of Maruti Swift. He was later released on bailed out. |

1,000 participate in joint placement drive
Kharar, October 19 Around 1,000 students from as many as 17 colleges, including SD College of Engineering, Muzaffar Nagar, Institute of Engineering and Emerging Technology, Baddi, Shri Vaishno Devi University, Katra (Jammu), participated in the drive. The company requires 1,000 software engineers skilled in AS/400, JAVA, .NET in the next two years and is offering a package of Rs 4 lakh per annum. Proceedings began with a pre–placement talk followed by a written test and one-to-one interview. Patiala, October 19 Contrary to expectations, the sting seemed missing in the ongoing knockout phase with fancied outfits making their way past their rivals with an ease. Kumaon University, Nainital, just went through the motions and none of their players exerted much yet managed to down PAU, Ludhiana, 3-0. For the winners Manoj, Neeraj and Neeraj Bisht were the scorers. The best goal of the tournament so far came in the last minute of the match when Neeraj Bisht received a high ball from Manoj and before the defenders could blink, Bisht rose above the defence to head the ball home. Allahabad Agricultural Institute blanked Faizabad University 4-0 with the highlight of the match being a brace by Parminder Singh. TDI Group duped of Rs 2.66 lakh
Mohali, October 19 As a token of acceptance for the land deal, the company paid Rs 2.66 lakh to the accused, identified as Teja Singh, a resident of Mauli Baidwan village and Jaipal of Desu Majra village. The deal for 21 kanals and 11 marla of land was fixed at Rs 1.7 crore. When the company enquired from the local patwari about the land, it was found that no such land existed in Suhgarh village. A case under Sections 419, 420, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the Phase I police station. No arrest has been made so far.

Chandigarh, October 19 Trespass
Nirmal, a resident of village Badheri filed a complaint with the police alleging that Kamaljit Kaur, a resident of Hoshiarpur trespassed into his residence on October 18. A case has been registered under Sections 448, 452 of the IPC at the police station of Sector 39. The accused has been arrested.

Mani Ram Chaudhary, a resident of Industrial Area II, filed a complaint with the police alleging that Pooja Bedi and her husband Gurpreet Bedi both residents of Sector 42 have stolen his mobile phone from the IT park Manimajra on September 27. A case under Section 380 of the IPC has been registered at the police station of Manimajra.

The local police have arrested Arjun Singh and Onkar Singh, residents of Sector 52 and Palsora for eve teasing from near the market of Sector 39 on October 18. A case under Section 294 of the IPC has been registered at the police station of Sector 39. Both the accused have been arrested. |

Woman hangs herself
Chandigarh, October 19 According to sources, the deceased Neelam hanged herself at her residence. She sent her husband, Haripal, a daily wager in the irrigation department, to call her son and locked herself in the room. The police was informed about the incident at 10.30 am. Quoting the family, the police said Neelam’s youngest daughter was engaged and her marriage was fixed for November 2. She refused to marry and ran away. Unable to bear the stigma, Neelam was depressed and committed suicide. |

Chandigarh, October 19 According to the police, a vehicle knocked down the victim. The man was severely hurt in the mishap and was rushed to the Sector 32 hospital in a profusely bleeding condition. Bhullar tied 25th in Asian Tour event
Chandigarh, October 19 The Kapurthala lad set a fine pace on the Royal Orchid greens firing four birdies carding a blemish-free four under 32 at the turn. After birdying the first hole, Gaganjeet shot a hat-trick of birdies
on the seventh, eighth and ninth. He made it five under with a birdie on the 12th. But then he faltered with a double-bogey on the 15th and a bogey on the 16th to finish at the two under 69 and a final tally of eight under 276 (69-67-71-69) to pocket a prize cheque of $4,650 in the Asian Tour event. But the best Indian performance came from 30-year-old Rahil Gangjee from Kolkata who also fired a two under 69 to finish tied ninth at 12 under par 272 (70-69-64-69) and pocketed a prize money of $10,425. Digvijay Singh finished tied 19th at nine under par 275 (68-72-68-67) and won $5,633. Anirban Lahiri, the fourth Indian in contention, was tied 25th along with Bhullar at eight under 276 (68-70-68-70). Seventeen-year-old Noh Seung-yul marked his place in the winners' circle by becoming the third youngest winner on the Asian Tour. The Korean teenager fought off a spirited challenge from Terry Pilkadaris of Australia by posting a three-under par 68 for a winning 17-under-par 267 total, taking a single stroke victory over the 34-year-old Australian. Mohali, October 19 Being Sunday and the Team India in a commanding position, over 15,000 spectators were present at the stadium today. This has come as a relief for the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the PCA authorities. “The first two days saw nearly 7,000 spectators, out of which 5,000 were students from rural areas of Punjab, who have been given a chance to watch the match free of cost. But today things have changed,” said an office-bearer of the PCA. “We have to give better facilities to the spectators in the stadium during the Tests. The TRP of these matches is quite encouraging, but the people are not coming to the stadium. So we have to look for the methods to pull the crowd back for Tests,” said ICC advisor and PCA chief I.S. Bindra Yesterday, ICC chief executive officer Harron Lorgat, too, expressed concern over thin attendance during Test matches. Cheers for Mishra Debutant Amit Mishra could not have asked for more. Govind best rider
Chandigarh, October 19 Govind Singh Sandhu, a national title-holder, has again cracked the jinx by clinching the best rider title under the U-13 years category in the Chandigarh Inter-School Equestrian Show-2008 held at the Lake Sports Complex
here today. In this show, he bagged eight medals, including four gold, two silver and two bronze, apart from being adjudged the best rider. “I know the path is not easy but I am working hard and giving my best to the sport,” he says. This 10-year-old equestrian has participated in national-level shows three times and has won many accolades, including this year’s Delhi Horse Show (DHS) at the Army Polo and Riding Club, New Delhi, where he won three medals - a gold, a silver
and a bronze. This horse-riding prodigy idolises Navjeet Sandhu, who represents India. “I watch most of his events and I think one day my hard work will take me there,” he quips. Jumping is what excites him the most and he has pocketed several gold medals in the event. “Most of the time, I practise jumping and it has been my passion ever since I joined horse riding,” he adds. He took up the sport at a tender age of six. It was his mother who gave him the initial lessons in the sport. “Horse riding is in my DNA as my mother, maternal uncle and cousins have been very good equestrians, says confident Govind. |
