Rape Bid
2 more accused surrender
Chandigarh, October 1
Manvir Singh Jolly and Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi, another suspects in the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of a German tourist, today surrendered before a local court. The court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Kanchan Mahi remanded them, along with Harpreet Singh Dali, another suspect arrested yesterday, to two days of police custody.

Students vow to keep up Gandhian values

UT district education officer Khushinder Sharma today launched non-violence week to be celebrated across the city schools at a function held at GMSSS, Sector 35. The week started with all students pledging to take their initiatives towards non-violence. This was followed by an informative play.

Nikita, Ruchira best debaters

Nikita Bery and Ruchira Bahugana of Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, Sector 27, bagged the first prize in the inter-school debate competition organised by Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Trust at the Press Club today. While Ishrat Singh and Ishaan Gulati of GMSSS-35 stood second, the third prize was awarded to Neelesh Arora and Inderdeep Paul of KBDAV-7.

Special kids entertained

A group of special children, who had come from Delhi to visit Chandigarh, were entertained by a group of teachers of the DAV Public Senior Secondary School, Mohali, led by their principal Jaya Bhardwaj. The school arranged a bus and took the children to a multiplex, Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake.

Woman killed in mishap
Morinda, October 1
Karam Kaur, a resident of Khanpur village, was hit by a speeding bus yesterday at Morinda highway. Karam was standing with her son Bhupinder Singh on the roadside to cross the road. Bus driver Ajaib Das, who was on way to Chandigarh from Morinda, hit the woman and fled from the scene.

A recklessly driven truck (HP-63-2743) rammed into the Kalka - Pinjore railway crossing late on Tuesday night. Ajay Jyoti Sharma, company commander of Railway Protection Force, Kalka, revealed that the speeding truck damaged the height gauge and the moving machine of the railway crossing.

Goals galore as Punjab eves beat Delhi

Goals were galore as Punjab pumped in plenty to make mincemeat of Delhi 14- 0 in the girls’ category on day two of the 29th Boys and 12th Girls junior National cycle polo championship played at the local Polo grounds here today.
The Punjab eves, taking advantage of home environs, pumped in as many as14 goals to down a listless looking Delhi. For the hosts, Gurpreet Kaur turned out to be the highest scorer with 7 goals, with the last two efforts being her best goals.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today allowed a writ petition by the son of an army officer who had contended that he was not granted admission in a local engineering college under the gallantry awards quota even though his father had been awarded the Chief of Army Staff’s Commendation for gallantry.

2 women held with 23-kg beef

The police recovered 23 kg beef from two women at Indira Colony this morning. However, two male members of their family managed to flee.

Three held for assault, robbery
Chandigarh, October 1
Baring tall claims of the Chandigarh police of ensuring safety to women, Chanchal, a Burail resident, was allegedly assaulted and robbed of her gold ring and a chain by four youths near her house.

Body found at petrol station
Panchkula, October 1
The local police has booked a driver of a car belonging to a snacks industry at Bapu Dham for an alleged hit-and-run case, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old youth here today.

Car stolen from Sec 32
Chandigarh, October 1
Vikas Goyal, a resident of Sector 32, filed a complaint with the police alleging that his Innova car (CH 04 A 3736) was stolen on the intervening night of September 28 and 29 from his residence. A case has been registered under Section 379, IPC, at the police station-34.
