Prof B.D. Gupta, a 74-year-old resident of Chandigarh who lost his son, a doctor, in a road accident in 1995, is a relieved man today. Though he is still grieving for his son, who was 23 years old at the time of his death, he is pleased that the judiciary at least got him a compensation.

Mediation centre decides first case

After three months of its inception, the much-hyped mediation centre decided its first case which was pending for the past 14 years. Giving details of the case, mediator Ashwini Bansal said, “It was a commercial dispute between two businessmen.

PM likely to visit Mohali
Mohali, September 6
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is likely to visit Mohali to lay the foundation stones of two projects linked to biotechnology in Sector 81 after September 15. However, sources said no date for the foundation stone laying ceremony had been fixed so far.

Ex-IT commissioner jailed

The special judge of the CBI court here held a former income tax commissioner guilty of indulging in corrupt practices and sentenced him to three years imprisonment. The CBI court held out a three-year sentence to M.L. Dhusa, who was posted at Ludhiana when he was trapped by the vigilance.

Special lok adalat held
Chandigarh, September 6
A special lok adalat was held for disposal of summary cases in the district courts today. District and Sessions Judge, UT, Kewal Krishan Garg said that a total of 29 MACT cases were disposed of wherein a compensation of Rs 53 lakh was given to the victims.

Baldev’s hat-trick sinks Haryana

Baldev Singh played the pivotal role in the victory (5-0) of Steadfast Football Academy, Mumbai, over Haryana Football Association in a group-A encounter during the ongoing sixth Administrator's Challenge Cup Football Tournament for Under-17 held at the Sector 17 football stadium here today. Baldev netted three goals. His goals came in the 17th, 32nd and 46th minutes. Azim Khan (19th) and Parmod Pandey (39th) contributed one goal each. Deepak of Haryana was given a red card for rough play after two cautions.

Rain plays spoilsport

Chandigarh got two points on account of the first innings lead during the ongoing Punjab State Inter-District Senior Tournament for the Katoch Shield as the overnight rain rendered the ground of the Sector 16 stadium unplayable and the umpires called off today’s match.

Ritu Case: In-laws held for murder
Panchkula, September 6
The Panchkula crime branch of the Haryana police has found the husband and in-laws of Ritu Bala, who was found dead in the bathroom of her residence at Sector 7 last year, guilty of murder.

Pedestrian hit by truck, dies
Chandigarh, September 6
A pedestrian, Jag Dayal, a resident of IT Park, was killed when a truck hit him near the IT Park yesterday evening. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to GMCH, Sector 32, where the doctors declared him brought dead.
