Capt Kanwaljit inaugurates cooperative bank
Zirakpur, August 21 The cooperation minister said the cooperative banks had more chances to excel as their motive was to serve the people. He said these banks were making advances to the people on much less interest rates as compared to private banks. For housing sector, private banks were charging 15 per cent interest whereas cooperative banks were charging 3 per cent less at 12 per cent. Similarly, for education loan, rate of the former was charging 12 per cent, while cooperative banks were charging 8 per cent interest. He said after today’s branch opening, people would gain immensely as it would also take electricity and water supply bills, besides performing routine banking functions. The minister said cooperative department had launched various schemes for public welfare. He also distributed the relief cheques for Barish Beema Yojna to the beneficiaries. Jasjit Singh Bunny, chairman of Punjab State Cooperative Bank Ltd, said cooperative banks were being upgraded to make them more friendly to people. |

Doctors not relieved after promotions
Patiala, August 21 The doctors claimed that the medical teachers were not being relieved by their parent department on the directions of health minister. The department said it had shortage of PCMS doctors in the field. The affected doctors said promotion was their fundamental right and there was also a shortage of teachers in state medical colleges. It was unjustified to retain them in the department after their promotion. Under the same order, doctors already posted in medical colleges at Amritsar and Patiala have joined after promotion, which may affect seniority of those who are yet to join from PCMS side. As per the orders, these doctors can join after their promotion only when relieved by their parent department. Chairman of medical education wing of IMA, Punjab, Dr D.S. Bhullar has appealed to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to intervene and direct the department of health and family welfare to relieve the PCMS doctors who had been promoted as medical teachers keeping in view the shortage of teachers in the state medical colleges and threat of de-recognition by MCI. A memorandum is also being sent to the chief minister through Daljit Singh Cheema, advisor to CM, said Bhullar. |

Adopt primary schools, Atwal to NRIs
Patiala, August 21 He said that this was due to the fact that governments in the past had not given emphasis on primary education in the state. He added that there was no proper infrastructure in primary schools, particularly those located in rural areas, and also there were no teachers in many schools of Punjab. He said the government should pay attention to primary schools, otherwise the standard of education would decline even more. Atwal was here to attend a function held at Punjabi University. He said he had appealed to NRIs to come forward and adopt some primary schools so that the standard of education would improve. He added that responding to his plea, nearly 150 NRIs had come forward to adopt primary schools in their native villages. |

Polygraphy test for murder accused
Fatehgarh Sahib, August 21 Police officials said the son-in-law of the victim lodged a complaint against the daughter-in-law. The daughter-in-law too lodged a similar complaint against victim's daughter. Fatehgarh Sahib SSP Kaustubh Sharma said the victim Mukhtiar Singh was found dead near his house with his hands and mouth tied with a rope. |

Rail services suspended
Kalka, August 21 Ajay
kochhar, station superintendent (SS) of the kalka railway station told The Tribune that due to the landslide near Kotti and Gumman railway station and also rise in the water-level of Sukhna river bridge near HPMC factory, adjacent to kalka-Parwanoo barrier, two trains were stopped at the Taksal railway station of
Parwanoo, in wake of passengers safety. Rest of the trains had to be cancelled before their departure from
Shimla. The department of railway, kalka had managed the taxis for the passengers from Taksal station to
kalka. Subsequently, the Himalayan Queen train for Delhi, departed at 6-10 pm instead of at 4-50, added
Kochhar. According to the sources, the department of IOW has already sent labourers to the spot to clear the landslide and the rail traffic would be resumed on Friday. |

Kalka, August 19 The dilapidated condition of the congested and steep roads with big potholes from the Parwanoo barrier to the Kali Mata temple and Gandhi chowk, which was recently carpeted by the NHAI. Same is the condition of the National Highway 21-A, Pinjore-Nalagargh road, which was used by thousands of heavy vehicles daily to reach Baddi, the industrial town of Himachal Pradesh. The link roads of the area connecting NH-22 to Kamli village, Sector-4 road of Parwanoo, khera sita ram, kamla nagar, NG railway colony, broad gauge railway colony, khatik mohalla, tipra, kalka railway station, kalka diesel shed, kalka housing board, bitna ITI road, surajpur road and mallah road have all been turned into a bad shape due to the apathy of the concerned department. |

Another Chandigarh golfer Harmeet Kahlon managed a one over par 72 to be placed 86th on day one. Harmeet played a bad front nine bogeying twice after shooting a birdie on the first. His return nine saw him hit three birdies and an equal number of bogeys for a par 36 and a card of one over 72. Twenty-year-old Gaganjeet Bhullar from Kapurthala started well, playing a par front nine. Bike, scooters stolen
Chandigarh, August 21 In other such incidents, two scooters were stolen from different places. In the first case, Barinder Singh of Sector 46 reported that his Bajaj Chetak (CH-03-J-7535) was stolen from his house between August 17 and 21, while Ajay Sharma of Mohali reported that someone stole his Bajaj Chetak (CH-03-N-2683) during the intervening night of August 19 and 20. Man arrested on sodomy charge
Chandigarh, August 21 Rajesh Shukla, SHO of the Sector 39 police station, said the 11-year-old boy, a resident of Dadumajra Colony, had gone to the market late in the evening when Sumit Sharma took him to a dumping ground and sodomised him. The police has registered a case on the complaint of the boy’s father. |

ASI manhandled at district courts
Mohali, August 21 The two under-trails, Bhupinder Singh and Manoj Kumar, who were suspects in a case of NDPS Act, had been brought to the court from Patiala Jail in connection with hearing of the case. On last March 21, the duo had been booked for allegedly possessing smack. Sources revealed that Rajinder Singh, an ASI with CIA staff, Kharar, was part of investigating team that had come to the court to give poppy husk samples. On seeing the cop, the suspects called him in the lock room and manhandled him. On the other hand, the suspects alleged that the ASI had asked for Rs 1.5 lakh from them to take them out of the case. On refusing, the cop started beating them. High drama had prevailed in the court premises and the court working was interrupted due to the incident. Meanwhile, the police maintained that the charges levelled by the suspects were false as they wanted to take revenge from the cops. The police has registered a case under Sections 353, 186, 332, 506, 295 of the IPC against the duo. |

4 houses burgled in Panchkula
Panchkula, August 21 According to one of the victims Vijay Gupta at house no. 672, the thief had decamped with jewellery, a camera worth more than Rs three lakh from his home when they were not at home. Vijay Gupta run business of transport at Chandigarh and his wife is employed at Mani Majra with an IT company. “Today we left for the work around 10 in the morning and when we returned at 6 in the evening, the locks of the house were broken,” said Gupta. Same is the story with other families also. Subahsh Gupta a resident of house no. 785 lost his 24 silver coins, 3 rings, gold chain and bangles along with a cash of Rs 11,000. Sameera Bajaj, a resident of house no. 2045, also reported that a gold chain, along with cash amount of Rs 11,000, was missing form her home. Tirath Saini, a resident of house no. 587-C, also said the burglars broke in his house as well. But the jewellery they had taken away was artificial, reported Saini. Two in Pinjore In two different incidents of burglary in Pinjore thieves decamped with cash and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees. According to the information available, the first incident of theft occurred at the house of Vijender Singh in Himshikha Colony of Pinjore when he had gone to Amritsar. He returned today and found that the thieves had decamped with Rs 85,000 cash and jewellery worth Rs 10,000. The other incident occurred in the Shiv Colony, Pinjore, at the house of Puran Chand, a bank employee at Baddi. He reported to the police that the incident took place when he was away to Patiala and his 10-year-old son, who was at home, had gone to the neighbourhood for sometime. When he returned home he found that the thieves had taken away Rs 50,000 cash and jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh. The thieves had also taken brass taps from kitchen and bathroom. DSP, Kalka, Daya Nand, said a special campaign would be launched to nab the thieves. He urged the people to inform the police in case anyone was out of station so that special vigil could be kept on the house. |

Another case of suspected dengue
Panchkula, August 21 Preeti (20), a resident of Sector 10, was admitted to the PGI emergency after she was referred by the General Hospital in Sector 6 here. Her husband said she had gone to the hospital after she complained of vomiting and headache, and doctors referred her to the PGI as they suspected dengue. Doctors at the PGI emergency said during the past few days, a number of suspected patients of dengue from the tricity had been pouring in. More than 15 suspected patients were under observation at the PGI. |
