After the Left parties announced their decision to withdraw support to the UPA government, external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee declared this evening that the ruling coalition would seek a vote of confidence as soon as it receives a formal communication from President Pratibha Patil.

There seems to be confusion in the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) regarding stand on the nuclear deal at the national level and also in Parliament. On one hand Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said he and his party would stand by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on the deal.

Amid signs of dissension, SP to play good supporter

The Samajwadi Party Parliamentary Board today declared by consensus its support for the nuclear deal and for the UPA government in Parliament, even as signals emerged after the meeting that there was dissension in the party over the issue and some MPs might violate the party whip in case a no-confidence motion against the government was brought in Parliament.

The BJP has asked the Congress-led UPA government to seek a vote of confidence immediately since the Left has formally withdrawn its support.

Describing the Kalka-Shimla railway line as “one of the most authentic mountain railways in the world,” UNESCO yesterday recognised it as a World Heritage Site.
