Sawrup veterans’ champ

Chandigarh, July 8
Sawrup Singh of AG Haryana today clinched victory over Sudhir Sharma of AG Punjab in the veterans’ final 21-16, 21-19 during the IA & AD North Zone Badminton Tournament 2008-09. The tournament is under way at the Sports Complex in Sector 42 here.

In the men’s singles semifinal encounter, Vijay Sharma of Delhi Audit defeated Amit of AG Punjab 21-15, 23-25, 21-14. In another semifinal, Ashish Sharma of AG Punjab beat Rajiv Sharma of Delhi Audit 21-16, 21-12.

Results:

Men: Doubles 1st semifinals: Amit & Ashish of AG PB beat Vijay & Deepak of AG HP (21-10, 21-11).

Men’s Doubles 2nd semifinals: Apinderpal Singh & Sunil Yadav of Delhi Audit beat Deepak & Salil of AG UP (23-21, 21-17)

Team championship 1st semifinal: AG PB beat AG UP (3-1); Amit of AG PB beat Deepak of AG UP (21-16, 21-18); Lav Kumar of AG PB lost to Sandeep of AG UP (5-21, 9-21); Amit & Ashish of AG PB beat Anurag & Deepak of AG UP (21-11, 19-21,21-14); and Ashish of AG PB beat Anurag of AG UP (21-13, 21-7)

Trials for sports quota admission again

After The Tribune highlighted redundant rules playing spoilsport in admission under the sports category through a story titled, “PU rules play spoilsport”, the PU authorities have decided to conduct sports trials again on July 14. All those who were not allowed to participate in the trials on July 6 as their forms had not reached the sports department can avail of the chance.

A committee was constituted to look into the matter on the same day and a report was also submitted to the vice-chancellor. The committee had recommended conducting the trials again after much deliberation.

Two call girls held

Panchkula, July 8
Two Chandigarh-based women were today arrested by the Panchkula police near the Mansa Devi T-point here on charges of prostitution. They have been sent to judicial custody by a local court today.

The women, residents of Attawa village, were nabbed while they were allegedly found soliciting customers near Command Hospital. Police officials said they had prior information about some prostitutes being active in the area and a trap was laid to nab them. Officials said two decoy customers was sent to strike a deal with the women and the latter agreed to accompany the men to a Manimajra hotel for Rs 500 each. While one of the decoy customers was a police constable, a local municipal councillor B.B. Singhal was sent as an independent witness.

As per the deal, the decoy customers agreed to follow the women, who had hired an autorickshaw, to the hotel in their own car. However, when the women reached the Mansa Dev T-point, they spotted a large number of policemen and got suspicious. They tried to flee but were nabbed, officials claimed.
