Licence to the Punjab Veterinary Vaccine Institute, the only government institute in the region that manufactures vaccines for livestock, has been denied due to the “carelessness” of the state government and its officials who failed to apply for its renewal on time.

Business halts as truckers go on strike

Business to the tune of crores was affected as transporters went on an indefinite strike here today. Protesting against multiple taxes, including toll and fuel price hike, transporters said they would continue with the stir until their problems were resolved.

Dept to take action against traders
Ludhiana, July 2
The excise and taxation department may take action against industrialists who failed to submit C forms even after the last date. While the panic-struck industry has been demanding extension of the last date by another three months, citing unavailability of forms as reason, department officials said they would soon take action.

The Punjab Pollution Control Board conducted a raid on industrial units in the Focal Point area today. Seventeen industries and dyeing and electroplating units, notorious for discharging toxic effluents into the Budda nullah, were inspected.

Fire in ACs disrupts railway reservation

Two air-conditioners installed in the reservation complex of the railway station here caught fire early in the morning. Although an alert tea vendor outside the complex informed the GRP and RPF personnel, who arrived within minutes and put out the fire after disconnecting the power line.

Attempt to Murder: Former MC president, associate booked

Five members of the Balmiki community were injured in the post-municipal council poll violence that took place at Jagera road here yesterday night. Former municipal council president Kishori Lal Badhan and his associate have been booked in this regard.

Man held with 32.2 kg poppy husk

Davinder Singh, alias Binder of Binjoke Khurd, Malerkotla police station, was arrested from near Dhaipai village while he was driving his car (DL-2CC-7990) here yesterday. About 32.2 kg of poppy husk was recovered from his possession.

The police yesterday arrested a man for possessing 30 kg poppy husk. The accused, identified as Sikandar Singh, is a resident of Gosla village. He had alighted from a truck when a police party on patrol from Manpur to Seh villages arrested him.

Seven persons were booked in a firing incident that had taken place in Samrala on Monday afternoon. Manjit Singh (30), a resident of Dialpura village, had sustained injuries when a few persons had opened fire on Monday afternoon.

Raj Kumar, a resident of Gulmohar Mohalla, received injuries while travelling in a rashly driven bus. Raj Kumar bumped in an iron handle installed in the bus and broke his arm. He was rushed to the civil hospital.

Many takers for biotech course
Ludhiana, July 2
Four-year BSc (hons) biotechnology course at Punjab Agricultural University has got tremendous response as 800 students took the entrance test for 50 seats on June 13. Dr Milkha Singh Aulakh, dean, College of Agriculture at PAU, said as many as 151 students qualified for the counselling that took place on Monday.

A team of health officials today visited the low-lying areas in the city and cautioned people against the diseases that spreads during the rainy season. Satish Sachdeva from the district mass education and information wing and its officer Rajinder Singh called upon the people to take special care of potable water.

Skipper Vinay Kumar led his team Vinay XI to a comprehensive 10-wicket victory against Bhuvnesh XI and booked a place in the semifinal on the fourth day of the first Ludhiana District Twenty20 Cricket Tournament (u-19) being organised by the Ludhiana District Twenty20 Cricket Association at the Government Polytechnic Institute, Rishi Nagar.

LBA trainees to represent India in global meet
Ludhiana, July 2
Rajan Sharma and Nagma Mirza, both trainees of the Ludhiana Basketball Academy being run here by the Punjab Basketball Association (PBA), have been selected to represent India in the fourth Children of Asia International Sports and Games to be held at Yakuts, Mirny and Neryngri, cities of Republic of Sakha in Russia, from July 3 to 14.

The District Hockey Association (DHA), Ludhiana, will hold trials again here at Prithipal Singh Memorial AstroTurf Stadium of Punjab Agricultural University on July 3 at 4 pm, according to secretary of the association Ajay Pal Singh.
