Tribune News Service

Patiala, June 2
In an unprecedented incident in Punjab, the Patiala mayor Ajit Pal Singh Kohli allegedly ‘coerced’ Patiala municipal corporation commissioner M.P. Arora accusing the latter of “not doing works or standing in ways of certain municipal councillors”

The verbal spat between the mayor and the commissioner continued in presence of around 12 ‘pro-mayor’ municipal councillors.

The mayor has, however, termed the allegations levelled by the commissioner as false. “He is a very senior PCS officers with 17 years of experience. How can such an officer be browbeaten in presence of 16-17 municipal councillors? How can so many people lie?” questioned Kohli when contacted by The Tribune.

M.P. Arora alleged that the mayor barged into his office along with many councillors and started misbehaving with him. “The mayor even threatened me to come out of my office so that he could see me. He barged into my office and started thumping on my table and hurled allegations that I was standing in ways of works of certain councillors close to the mayor.

“In fact, the mayor was upset over calling of tenders for some works by my office in the light of Punjab and Haryana High Court orders whereas, he wanted to allot these works to his close councillors. He also pointed out that I was getting chlorination of water checked whereas, it was my duty to do so. What is wrong in it?” quipped an anguished commissioner.

“He alleged that the mayor was also upset over calling of meeting of female councillors by him while implementing directions in this regard by the Punjab local bodies minister Manoranjan Kalia.

The cold war between the mayor and the commissioner, it was learnt, was going on for past some months, but it was for the first time that their differences have came out in the open. “How can I do so? The commissioner is a senior officer and he should not behave like a school kid. I have high regards for him,” said the mayor.

200 shopkeepers get notices for violating building norms
Asked to vacate shops within 10 days
Tribune News Service

Samana, June 3
The local municipal committee has served notices on nearly 200 shopkeepers on the Ghagha road for violating building norms. The shopkeepers have been served notices for allegedly building unauthorised constructions.

The committee has asked the shopkeepers to vacate their premises within 10 days of the date of issue of the notice. The shopkeepers are at their wits end as their families will be displaced if their shops are vacated.

These notices have been issued as per the provisions of the PUDA Act of 1995.

However, the shopkeepers claim that their shops are at a distance of 150 foot from the road and were built around 40 years ago. They claimed that the electricity meters, too, were installed nearly 40 years ago by the authorities concerned. A shopkeeper said they had been paying house tax for the past 40 years and did not know why the municipal committee officials had sent them the notices.

Sources reveal if the MC authorities go by the rules, then the other structures, including a gurdwara, State Bank of Patiala branch, Aggarwal Gaushala, FCI godowns, two gates of a cremation ground and several other important places, should also have been served notices.

The shopkeepers have requested the state government to intervene in the matter and save families from being displaced and losing their livelihood. They said they had appealed to the state government to intervene and ask the municipal committee to immediately take the notices back.

On the other hand, officials of the municipal committee said they had served notices to the shopkeepers because a bypass had to constructed through that area. However, the shopkeepers said if the government had to construct the bypass, it could have been done at an alternative place and not by displacing their premises.

Agents resent wheat shortage notices
Our Correspondent

Bassi Pathana, June 3
Strong resentment prevailed among commission agents of the town against the notices sent by Markfed, a procurement agency of Bassi Pathana, imposing shortage of 126 quintal of wheat procured by the agency from them.

Surinder Singh, general secretary of the District Arthia Association, in a press release issued here today said the agents had strongly condemned the action and decided to oppose the dictatorial attitude of the Markfed officers and not to pay for shortage.

He alleged that the Markfed officials had taken this step just to save their skin as they failed to lift the procured wheat in time and the market committee imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh to various procurement agencies.

He said that commission agents were responsible for the weight of procured wheat within 72 hours of procurement and at that too, at their shops not in the godowns at other stations.

He said the procured wheat remained lying in grain market for months and they had to approach the DC for lifting it.

Dalip Singh, inspector of Markfed, while talking to The Tribune said the delay occurred due to shortage of labour. Moreover, they don’t have storage space at Bassi Pathana and the wheat had to be stored at Khanna town, he added.

He admitted that the weight loss might have occurred due to pilferage during transportation. He hoped the matter would be solved.
