Barnala
2 killed in road mishap
: Gurmail Singh, who worked at a brick kiln near Karmgarh village, was hit by a scooter on Friday morning while he was seeing his daughter off on the main road. Both Gurmail and scooter rider Dalbara Singh, sustained major head injuries and were rushed to the local civil hospital. Their condition being critical, they were referred to Ludhiana but both collapsed on the way. Industrial area police post in-charge Iqbal Singh said a case had been registered.

RC Chopra dead
: Founder president of St Soldier Group R.C. Chopra died here on Thursday evening after a brief illness. His body was consigned to the flames by his sons, Anil Chopra, chairman of the group, and Sunil Chopra, at the Model Town cremation ground.

Anurag clears IIT
: Anurag Singh of Anand Public School, Kapurthala, who has cleared the IIT/JEE entrance test. Anurag is the only student in the district to clear the test.

Dharna to stop auction
: Bharatiya Kisan Union workers intervened and stopped the auction of the houses of some persons in Joga village by staging a dharna against the local branch of the State Bank of India, the bank conducting the auction against non-payment of loans in full. Leader of the union Inderjit Singh said some persons of the village had taken a bank loan and had returned most part of it but were unable to return the remaining amount. So, bank officials announced the auction of their houses.

False case
: The Gurdaspur police has booked Kuldeep Singh of Bakhshiwal here on Friday under Sections 419/468/465/471/ 193/196/ 199/209, IPC, for allegedly filing a false case against the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in the court of Harjinderpal Singh, Additional Session Judge,Gurdaspur.

Dharna by BSNL staff: Members of the Employees Union of the BSNL held a dharna in front of the office of GM(T) here on Wednesday seeking IDA merger linked with the new promotion policy,wage negotiation and bonus uniform supplies.

Man booked for rape: Karan Raj of Model Town here has been booked under Section 376, IPC, for raping his minor and mentally challenged daughter. SP Harpreet Singh said on Thursday that a case was registered against Karan on the complaint of his wife Nirmala Devi.

Loan mela
: State Bank of Patiala, Sanaur, near here, organised a deposit-cum-loan mela in the bank’s premises on Friday. Chief manager from regional office, Patiala, Ashok Ashu distributed loans under different categories like rural housing loan scheme, kisan gold card, kisan cash credit housing loans and personal loans. The branch manager told that fresh deposits of Rs 50 lakh were also collected in the mela.

BSNL told to pay
: In a case of non-allotment of penta number i.e. 00000 as last five digits for a mobile phone connection, the Sangrur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the local authorities of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to allot the penta number bearing 00000 as last five digits within a period of 30 days to the complainant Ravinder Pal Kaur wife of Dr Jagmohan Singh, resident of Civil Hospital here.

Seminar
: Fortis Hospital organised a seminar on ‘Causes and ill-effects of smoking’ here on Friday. Mohali deputy commissioner Rahul Bhandhari was the chief guest. Over 100 persons from various companies like Ranbaxy, PTL and personnel of the Mohali police attended the seminar held in support of World No Tobacco Day.

Interaction: A sensitisation interaction via videophone regarding the implementation of Rashtriaya Swasthya Bima Yojna was held here on Wednesday with the deputy commissioners, civil surgeons and other key district-level officers of the five districts of Amritsar, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Sangrur and Patiala. Health and managing director, PHSC, told that the session was held to introduce the key district officers with the officers of National Insurance Company and its Third Party Associates who had been awarded the contract to provide the medical insurance cover.

Body found
: The police on Friday found the body of a driver in a park near the bus stand. The deceased has been identified as Mange Ram, driver with the state roadways, Bhiwani depot. Sources said the deceased was under suspension these days. Relatives have apprehended murder behind the death. In another incident, a married woman of Makdani village died under mysterious circumstances here on Friday. The woman identified as Saroj (30) had consumed some poisonous substance.

Sowing of ‘saathi’
: The agriculture authorities have been taking the help of remote sensing technology and satellite systems to keep an eye on farmers sowing “saathi” variety of paddy, also called the summer paddy. Farmers prefer this variety because they get an additional crop besides rabi and kharif crop. With agriculture fields free from March end to June end, farmers have been growing this variety of rice for years. But, the state government has started getting tough with farmers as this variety takes a heavy toll on water resources.

Motor cycle thieves held
: The CIA branch of the Kaithal police has busted a gang of motorcycle thieves and arrested nine members of the gang. It also recovered 10 motorcycles from their possession valuing Rs 3.30 lakh. The motorcycles had been stolen from Kaithal, Jind and Hisar districts. SSP Anil Kumar Rao said the arrested had been identified as Shiv Kumar of Panipat district, Manoj Kumar and Sandeep of Kaithal district, Sandeep and Bhag Singh of Kithana and Ajmer, Savinder, Khushi Ram and Ajay of Thua village.

Ex-servicemen’s meeting: Ex-servicemen organised a meeting here on Friday, which was presided over by the district president of the Ex-servicemen league, Capt G.D. Tewari (retd). In the meeting, the centre government was urged to constitute a separate pay commission for armed forces, introduce one rank one pension system, guaranteed employment for all ex-servicemen up to 60 years and demanded welfare of widows of ex-servicemen.

Man robbed of Rs 6 lakh
: A property dealer, Ramesh Lathwal, was robbed of a bag containing Rs 6 lakh here on Friday on the premises of tehsil. He had come there to make the payment to a party for registry of a plot. He said after waiting for the other party till noon, he counted the cash in front of many people, who were present there, and kept the amount in the bag. Later, he found that the bag was missing.

BILASPUR
Shop gutted
: A fire in a furniture shop completely destroyed the furniture, other machines and implements and materials kept in it. The incident took place at Auhar on Thursday night near here. Reports said the furniture shop of Shiv Kumar Dhiman was located away from the main bazar and nobody noticed the fire during the night. It was discovered early in the morning but everything was turned into ashes by then. A short circuit is said to be the cause of the fire while a loss of about Rs 5 lakh had been estimated. The district administration provided a spot grant of Rs 5,000 to the owner.

Painting exhibition
: An exhibition titled ‘Metascapes’- thoughts beyond imagination, was showcased in the Bhuri Singh Museum, Chamba, recently. A group of seven artists belonging to the state have endeavoured to present the abstract thoughts of conscious and subconscious minds in a captivating manner in their paintings done in different mediums. Curator of the Museum, Hari Chauhan, said the work of every artist was quality work in its own right and represents their culture, tradition, and love for environment, heritage and other social themes. The exhibition is success and had become a source of attraction to the viewers and the art critic, especially the tourists.

Recruitment rally
: A recruitment rally for selecting general category soldiers (clerks) from the Sikhs, Sikh Majhabi and Ramdasia will be held from June 2 to 7 at the Army grounds, Solan. Director, Army recruitment, Col Manik said recruitment for NCC certificates holders from Una, Hamirpur and Bilaspur would also be held. The rally for candidates from Hamirpur would be held on June 3, for Una, Bilaspur and general category on June 4 and others on June 5, he said.

One dies in mishap
: Shashi Pal (25), the driver of the tractor trolley, died on the spot when it overturned near Bhali at the Pathankot-Mandi national highway on Thursday evening. The Kotla police has registered a case under Sections 279 and 304 (A) of the IPC. According to the police, the deceased had lost control over the vehicle, which overturned on the highway killing him on the spot.

Bharat Jyoti Award
: A leading lawyer and general secretary of the Pradesh Congress Committee, Kuldeep Rathore, has been conferred the “Bharat Jyoti Award” by the India International Friendship Society. The award will be presented during the conference on Economic Growth and National Integration being organised by the society at New Delhi on May 31.

Vaishno Devi pilgrims
: A record number of pilgrims had visited the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi and the number had crossed 25 lakh mark so far, official sources said on Friday. “About 25.82 lakh pilgrims have paid obeisance at the shrine so far which was 3.16 lakh more than the number recorded during the equivalent period in the previous year,” sources said.

Man murdered: A villager was stabbed to death by his neighbour over a land dispute in Poonch district on Friday, official sources said. Bagh Hussain died on the spot after his neighbour Mohammad Taj stabbed him during a quarrel over a piece of land at Kali Mata Doke in Hikll Kaka belt of Poonch district. Taj was arrested and a case has been registered.

Bangladeshis held: Nine Bangladeshis including women and children were arrested in Samba sector on Thursday. The illegal immigrants were trying to sneak into Pakistan from the international border near the Gole Panj Pir area in Samba sector, official sources said. However, SSP (border) Rajinder Gupta claimed that no such incident took place.

Man drowned
: One person was drowned, while a tourist hut was gutted in the Kashmir valley on Friday. Official sources said one Mudasir Ahmad Dar was drowned in a canal at Kangan in Ganderbal district. Efforts were on to fish out his body, they added. Meanwhile, a hut of the state tourism was gutted in a devastating fire at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex (SKICC) on the banks of the Dal Lake. Two tourism employees received burn injuries. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained.

Labourer killed: Chedu Lal Dangervra, a labourer from Nepal, was killed after being hit by a boulder inside the tunnel of an under-construction power house in Baramulla district on Friday. A boulder fell on Chedu, killing him on the spot, the police said. In another mishap, Ghulam Nabi Mir, a pedestrian, was killed after being hit by a motorcycle at the Ferozpora crossing on the Srinagar-Gulmarg road.

Student commits suicide: A class 6th student committed suicide in the Kashmir valley on Thursday. Official sources said Humayun Mushtaq hanged himself on the second floor of his residence in Safipora, Ganderbal. The police was trying to ascertain the reason of his extreme step.

70,000 jobs: The state government has constituted the District Recruitment Boards (DRB) to recruit 70,000 unemployed youth of the state within the next three months. This information was given by Taj Mohi-ud-din, minister for consumer affairs and public distribution on Friday. He said DRBs had been constituted for the fast track recruitment of educated unemployed. He said nearly 70,000 jobs would be provided to the job seekers.
