All 15 accused acquitted

The acquittal of 15 suspects has ‘proved’ that no one fired gunshots in the courts complex on July 6, 1998.

Sales tax on medicines: HC quashes UT notification

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has set aside a notification issued by the UT Administration on November 30, 2005, vide which the rate of sales tax on medicines was reduced with retrospective effect.

Fire at insurance company office
Chandigarh, April 19
A fire broke out in the office of HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company at Sector 9, here this evening. According to eyewitnesses, the air-conditioner of the office at the ground floor caught fire and it spread quickly due to the wooden partitioning installed in the office room.

The Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA), Chandigarh, debarred a habitual offender from holding a driving licence for a period two months following recommendations made by the traffic police, here on Thursday.

PTU to conduct CET in May

Punjab Technical University will conduct the Combined Entrance Test (CET-2008) for admissions to engineering and pharmacy colleges in the state in the last week of May. The counselling process, which will be conducted in two parts, will be held in the third and fourth week of June.

Admn extends green belt in educational institutions

2-yr jail term for forgery
Chandigarh, April 19
Disposing of over 53 complaints of forgery against Amarjeet Singh Chadha, judicial magistrate A.S. Shergill today convicted him in 20 cases and acquitted him in 33. The court awarded him a two-year imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1,000 in 20 cases. The sentence will run concurrently.

Fake currency racket busted

Rajpura, April 19
The police today busted a fake currency racket with the arrest of Patiala resident Yadwinder Singh, alias Yadu, of Ghuman Nagar locality. Fake currency notes worth over Rs 2.20 lakh were seized from him. The police also found the equipment that was used to print the notes.

A team led by CIA (II) sub-inspector Aman Pal today nabbed Punjab Armed Police (PAP) assistant sub-inspector Jasbir Singh and Patiala-based Punjab Police constable Inderjit Singh with fake currency amounting to Rs 85,000.

One killed, five injured in mishaps
Ambala, April 19
One person was killed and five others were injured in two separate accidents in Ambala late last evening. A motorcycle and an ambulance collided on the Ambala-Jagadhari road near Mulana. Jagadhari-resident Jaswinder Singh died on the spot while other two persons received serious injuries in the mishap.

3 women held for fraud
Chandigarh, April 19
Three women — Anita, a resident of Sector 37, Anmol Arora, a resident of Sector 68, and Archna, a resident of Sector 40 — have been arrested on charges of fraud. According to information, Anita along with the two accused had withdrawn Rs 30,000 from the account of her father-in-law from the Sector-17 branch of the Oriental Bank of Commerce by producing fake cheques on April 16.

Medicines worth Rs 20 lakh stolen from godown
Zirakpur, April 19
Thieves decamped with medicines worth Rs 20 lakh from a godown here today. Owner of the godown Naresh Gupta told the police that the theft took place on the intervening night of April 17 and 18.

Youth commits suicide
Chandigarh, April 19
Depressed over his prolonged illness, Ranjit Singh, a 26-year-old youth, allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan at Mauli Jagran here this morning. The body was found hanging by family members of the deceased after they went to his room in the morning.

One held for vehicle theft

With the arrest of a 26-year-old youth, the Chandigarh police today claimed to have solved the case of Sector-32 vehicle theft that happened recently. The accused was arrested from Burail, here this evening.
