Fake currency racket
busted
Rajpura, April 19 According to city SHO Bikramjit Singh Brar, the police received an information that a person was travelling with the fake currency notes. Acting on the tip-off, the police put up a checkpoint near the railway underbridge and stopped the vehicle in which the accused was travelling. On searching the vehicle, the police recovered suspicious looking notes, which were later found to be fake. The police immediately placed the driver of the vehicle under arrest. On being interrogated, Yadwinder admitted that he was running a fake currency racket and had been supplying the currency to various parts of the state and also to the neighbouring state of Haryana. He told the police that he had taken an accommodation on rent in the Samana segment of the district where he had installed his equipment. He used to print the notes there and circulate these through a network, he added. The SHO said Yadwinder used to sell the fake currency for half the total worth of the notes. Meanwhile, the police has registered a case against the accused. The matter is still being investigated to find out the modus operandi of the gang and crack the network through which the fake currency was circulated in the market. |

Patiala, April 19 The accused were nabbed from near the Rajindra Hospital mortuary, said DSP (D) Manjit
Brar. The accused, Brar said, were into the illegal business of circulating fake currency and estimated to have pushed fake currency to the tune of Rs 3 lakh during the past one year in Patiala city. They used to get fake currency from one Rinku of
Solan. A case has been registered under Sections 489-B&C, 420 and 120-B of the
IPC. The Patiala police is on the look for Rinku who was absconding. |

function ‘Elysum-08’ followed by a prize distribution function. The
function was presided over by Inderjeet Bajaj, president of the Seth
Nand Lal Bajaj Education and Charitable Society and president, Dera
Bassi Industries’ Association. Students presented a variety of
cultural items. Principal Dr J.K. Sharma presented the college report.
About 40 academic cash prizes were given to students who topped PTU
semester as well as yearly examinations. Patiala TALENT HUNT: Swami Vivekanand Institute of
Engineering and Technology (SVIET) held a talent-hunt programme for
students of the region. The programme was inaugurated by SVIET’s
senior lecturer Puja Mittal. She announced that the Swami Vivekananda
group was coming up with an exclusive Institute of Management for Women
from this session and a letter of intent from the All-India Council of
Technical Education (AICTE) had already been received for this purpose.

Rajpura, April 19 Eight teams from different villages of the Rajpura segment vied for top honours during the three-day tournament. Having reached the finals of the tournament, Takhtumajra won the toss and elected to bat. However, the top order of the team could not survive the bowling attack of Khadauli team and were bundled out for a total of 76 runs in 14.4
overs. The Khadauli team batsmen chased the total in 11 overs after losing only three wickets. During the prize distribution ceremony, the chief guest

However, GNPS could score 106 runs for the loss of four wickets in the allotted overs and lost the match by a narrow margin of two runs. Chandigarh, April 19 With the help of Gaurav’s
knock, which comprised 10 fours and three sixes, PEC scored 222 for 7 in
25 overs. Simranjit supported Gaurav with 38 runs whereas Mohit made 20
runs. For Longowal, Sonek, Pardeep and Nishant took two wickets each. Chasing the target, Longowal team gave up on just 101 runs. Ravinder (22) was the highest scorer while Pardeep Kumar and Suresh Singh hit 15 and 16 runs respectively. Gaganpreet was the wrecker-in-chief for PEC, claiming four for 14. Chandigarh, April 19 Batting first after winning the toss, HDFC Bank XI lost their first wicket on the very first bowl of their innings when Amrit Pal was caught at covers off Neeraj Rana. However, Saini, who smashed a swashbuckling 119 off 65 balls, provided the innings an impetus. He built up an 85-run partnership with Balwar Pooni, which helped the team reach a total of 211 runs for a loss of 9 wickets. For the Fortis XI, Vikram claimed two wickets for 35 runs and Neeraj Rana two wickets for 36 runs. In reply, Fortis XI batsmen had a terrible outing on the crease, as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. Neeraj Rana was the only batsman to have put up some resistance as he scored 36 runs for his team. Manpreet Dhingra picked up three wickets for 19 runs. Their innings ended at 181 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. The final of the tournament will be held between HDFC Bank XI and Fullerton India XI at the Sector-16 stadium tomorrow. Summer golf camps for
youngsters
Chandigarh, April 19 A similar coaching programme last year saw 70 youngsters learning the basics of the game during the summer vacations. Seeing the rush, which could not be absorbed, the club is hopeful of giving golf coaching to at least 100 students this year. These will include wards of members as also non-members. Ajay Gujral, the EGTF certified coach, who will be running these coaching programmes, is happy at the enthusiasm shown by the kids to learn this sport. He said already a long-term coaching programme for youngsters is underway in which 11 children are receiving training for the past two weeks. The first short-term camp will begin on January 3. The eight-day training will see children learn all aspects of the game for one hour daily. To be held from 5 to 6 pm, the first camp will conclude on June 13. Giving details of the camp, Ajay Gujral said all aspects of the game would be taught. These include grip, aim, alignment, stance, posture, chipping, pitching, sand play and putting. To motivate the youngsters, golf magazines will be distributed. Each student will be charged Rs 2,000 for the eight-day camp. But this fee will be made up with the chipping and putting competitions where attractive prizes of Rs 2,000 will be up for grabs, added Ajay Gujral. Soon after completion of the first camp the second and third short-term coaching programmes will be conducted. |

Chandigarh, April 19 According to Dr Vipnesh Bhardwaj, secretary of the association, two boys and two girls would be selected from this tournament to represent Chandigarh during the forthcoming Parsavnath XXII National Under-9 Boys and Girls Chess Championship 2008. 3 women held for fraud
Chandigarh, April 19 According to information, Anita along with the two accused had withdrawn Rs 30,000 from the account of her father-in-law from the Sector-17 branch of the Oriental Bank of Commerce by producing fake cheques on April 16. The accused came again and tried to withdraw Rs 20,000 more, but bank AGM A.S. Cheema caught the accused and handed them over to the police.
Theft
Vipin Kumar, a resident of Burail and Naresh Kumar of Mohali was arrested on charges of stealing 60 metres of Reliance cable wire from Sector 20 yesterday. The complainant, Vikas Gupta, caught the accused red-handed and informed the police. A case under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC has been registered at the police station-19.

Parul, a resident of Sector 16, reported to the police that her Kinetic Honda scooter (HR 01 F 3182) was stolen from her residence. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the police station-17. In another incident, Maninder Kaur, a resident of Sector 16, filed a complaint with the police alleging that her car (CH 03 X 5907) was stolen from her residence. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the police station-17. Also, Gurjan Nagpal, a resident of Sector 38, lodged a compliant with the police alleging that his car (PB 15 D 6577) had been stolen from outside his residence. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the police station-39. |

Medicines worth Rs 20 lakh stolen from
godown
Zirakpur, April 19 Gupta
added that he was clearing a forwarding agent of medicines and huge
stocks of goods were lying in the godown. Gupta contacted the police,
who came to the godown to take stock of the theft. “The thieves were
helped by someone who knew the rates of various medicines in the
market. Only the most expensive and valuable medicine were stolen,”
said Gupta. A police case has not been registered so far. This is the second case of theft in a medicine godown in the past 10 days. A week ago, a similar theft of medicines had taken place in the godown of Naresh Kumar. The thieves had decamped with medicines worth Rs 40,000. |
