7 of family murdered
Ghaziabad, April 16 The gruesome tragedy took place in the house of art teacher Shaukat Ali in Bhawan Kheri village in Hasanpur. Shaukat Ali was an art teacher in Kisan Inter College, Tahrpur. IG police Gurbachan Lal has suspended four cops including the Kotwali in-charge. The police has arrested the cousin of the head of the slain family on suspicion. The whole area is in a state of shock and terror. While condoling and condemning the dance of death, nobody reportedly cooked food in 50 surrounding
villages. The family had retired to different rooms on ground floor, after dinner on Monday night except daughter Shabunam who had gone up to sleep on the terrace. Between 12.30 and 1 am Shaukat Ali, his wife Hashmi, 20-year-old niece Rabiya, elder son Anis Ahmed, his pregnant wife Anjum and one-year-old son Ansh and younger son Rashid were sleeping in the compound. They were all killed. At 2 am when Shabunam sleeping on the terrace came down, as it started raining, she was shocked to see all lying in a pool of blood. Now cops have been deployed in the village in view of tension and fear in the area. Shaukat’s cousin, Sukhan, son of Wazir, has been arrested by the police on suspicion. A pot of milk found below the teacher’s bed has been sent for lab test. The suspicion of the police that some property dispute was at the back of the tragedy, does not appear to be convincing to most of the villagers. |

Kids march for Bhopal gas victims
New Delhi, April 16 Echoing the marchers’ demands for an empowered commission to provide medical, social, economic and environmental rehabilitation to those who have suffered since the 1984 tragedy, the children took the march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament Street. “We had heard of the Bhopal gas tragedy. But after hearing the tales from the people themselves, especially from children, we feel strongly for their cause,” said Raghav Sharma, a student of Shri Ram school. The tragedy dates back to December 3, 1984, when a Union Carbide subsidiary pesticide plant in Bhopal released 40 tonne of methyl isocyanate gas, killing approximately 3,800 people. The incident, known as one of the world’s worst industrial disasters, left many suffering from chronic exposure. Contaminated groundwater around the plant area still continues to infect people with various diseases. Of the 50 people who took the month-long Bhopal-Delhi march or padyatra of 800 km, five were children. Rachna Dhingra of the Bhopal Group for Information and Action said that the kids who participated in the march were 11-year-olds. “The marchers, including children, have just one demand — Prime Minister Manmohan Singh keeps his promises that he made to the people of Bhopal when they took a similar march two years ago,” Dhingra told IANS. Yasmin, one of the 11-year-old marchers, has written a letter to the Prime Minister in blood, urging him to keep his promises. “Children of Bhopal are victims of two of the world’s worst disasters. One was caused by the Union Carbide’s toxic gases and the other by the water that is still contaminated due to the tragedy,” Yasmin said. This letter, along with others echoing similar sentiments and written by school students of Delhi and Chennai, will be submitted to Manmohan Singh by a delegation of children. The marchers submitted a letter earlier to the Prime Minister with 20 questions. These include queries like what measures have been taken to ensure medical care to victims of the tragedy and why the government has not taken any steps to prosecute Union Carbide? Students of the Shri Ram School, Tagore International School and Blue Bells School were among those who participated in the rally.

The woman got suspicious, contacted U.K. High Commission where she was told that they were fraudsters. The callers through another number informed her that they had received the draft from the company and had paid Rs 15,000 on her behalf. Since the draft was of a large sum of money it could not be sent back and demanded a sum of Rs. 15,000. When she refused, they threatened her that they would harm her family and directed her to meet them or sent her photograph by April2,2008. The police team with the help of two mobile phones with Mumbai numbers used in negotiations apprehended Saheed Ali Olayiwala and Adelwale Adeniyi Isiak from Neb Sarai village on April 11. Bhagat Singh was for social change: Irfan Habib
New Delhi, April 16 “Bhagat Singh’s vision of India’s freedom was much broader. He believed that Swaraj was not enough. Revolutionary transformation was must for a socialist society,” said historian Irfan Habib. He also talked about the writings of the martyr. In his writings, Bhagat Singh has discussed the problem of gap between ‘manual and mental labour’ in post-revolutionary society.
“Bhagat Singh wanted to create his party on Bolshevik principles. He even created the Naujwan Bharat Sabha and the Lahore Students Union,” he informed. “Bhagat Singh was bold enough not to disown his revolutionary acts of either killing Saundres or attacking the Delhi assembly.” Irfan Habib said that if ‘Why I am an Atheist’s’ the last testament of Bhagat Singh had been given proper place in post-independent India, problems like communalism and sectarianism would never have erupted. Mridula Mukerjee, historian and director of Nehru Memorial Museum and Library said, “1857 and Bhagat Singh hold significance in India’s struggle for freedom.” She added that Saundres killing was to avenge the national insult perpetrated by the killing of Lala Lajpat Rai. The colonial British police had killed Lala Lajpat Rai. Historian and chairman of the Indian council of Historical Research, Sabyasachi Bhattacharya also spoke on the war of 1857 and Bhagat Singh’s role in India’s struggle for freedom. Editor of Bhagat Singh’s documents, Chaman Lal convened the discussion. He said, “Bhagat Singh’s image of just a brave patriot needs to be changed. His writings prove that he was a revolutionary socialist.” “Had he been allowed to live, he would have provided leadership to the freedom movement,” said BB Bhattacharya, vice-chancellor, JNU. “JNU is happy to have the Bhagat Singh Chair.” |

Raids on grain traders decried
New Delhi, April 16 O.P.Jain, president, Delhi Grain Merchant Association, has expressed concern at the continuing raids on foodgrain traders by the Delhi government despite prices being under check. “No trader wants to stockpile eatables particularly foodgrain as these items depend on crop season,” he said. “The wholesale prices of various pulses are down by 5-10 per cent in the last couple of months. The food chain retail stores are also helping in checking prices of these essential kitchen items. The moong ‘daal’ is selling at Rs 3300 -3500 per quintal in the wholesale market and is about Rs 35-40 in the retail market,” said Ashok Gupta of Dal and Besan Millers Association. “We extend full support to Delhi government in further bringing down prices by providing grain and pulses at competitive prices,” he added. “We are open to all checks for our stocks, as this is the age of transparency and no trader wants to hold stocks in this global fluctuating market,” Gupta said. |
