New Delhi, April 11
The function organised to celebrate the birth anniversary of Baba Bhim Rao Ambedkar in Delhi University today by the members of Ambedkar Students Organisation of India (ASOI) turned ugly when a group of students led by Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) office-bearers tried to disrupt the celebrations.

Gagan Kumari, a member of ASOI was allegedly slapped by Khushboo Sharma, joint secretary, DUSU, amidst the scuffle that followed soon after the function began.

The group of students led by Khushboo Sharma alleged that the function was being organised without the permission of the office-bearers of DUSU.

According to K S Saroha, convenor, ASOI, the function was organised two days in advance owing to a holiday on April 14, the birth date of Baba Bhim Rao Ambedkar.

Even as the function was mid way near the leader’s statue before the DUSU office and chief guest, Narender Kumar, senior IAS officer, was about to deliver his speech, hundreds of students led by Khushboo Sharma thronged the premises and started throwing empty chairs. They shouted slogans against the ASOI.

The protest by the ASOI members led to heated arguments between the two groups. A girl, Gagan Kumari, was slapped by Khushboo Sharma when she tried to reason with the group.

“It was totally uncalled for and instances of fascist politics in which NSUI indulges. They say that the function was organised without seeking their permission but we have never sought any permission in the past years for garlanding the statue of Baba. Such hooliganism has never happened before,” said Saroha.

Speaking to The Tribune, Narender Kumar said that “the group of these anti-social elements did not have the sense to be courteous at least in the presence of senior professors of the university who were present on the occasion.

The incident should be criticised in the harshest of words and such vandalism should not have any place in the society”.

The members of ASOI sat on protest before the entrance of the DUSU office after the disruption of their non-political function.

After passage of about two hours, Khushboo Sharma came back and apologized for her behaviour. However, this was not to pacify the protestors.

“We have sought a meeting with Rahul Gandhi, MP and would apprise him of the divisive politics in which NSUI is indulging on campus here. We would request him to dismiss the present NSUI members in the DUSU,” said Saroha.

A travel agent had accompanied him. Soon after checking in, he left the hotel and returned around 8 pm, said a hotel staff.

Even in the morning, there was no response from his room. When the travel agent came to meet him in the afternoon, he did not respond. The hotel staff had to break open his room’s door, where he was found lying dead.
