Punjabi University to reserve area for peacocks
Varinder Singh
Tribune News Service

Patiala, March 26
Dozens of peacocks- a peculiar feature for which Punjabi University is known far and wide among wildlife lovers - would finally find a secure abode for themselves as the university authorities are all set to create a reserved area for them on the campus.

Not only this, on a ‘green initiative’ by the vice-chancellor of the university Dr Jaspal Singh, more than 2,500 saplings of perennial and flowering trees were being planted by the university’s horticulture wing on the campus, already laden with greenery.

Nearly 500 out of 2,500 saplings have already been planted.

What makes the varisty campus different and a unique place is that dozens of peacocks have made it their home over the years. They have got so used to the atmosphere of the university that they even roam about freely on the campus irrespective of movement of students or teachers.

“To preserve our wildlife in the shape of peacocks, we have decided to earmark a special area for these creatures. The objective of this exercise is to see their numbers grow. We want to give them a place where they could move about and breed freely. In fact, it is a unique feature of a varsity to have as many peacocks on its campus. I don’t think that there is any university anywhere to have so many beautiful creatures,” said Dr Jaspal Singh.

Dr Singh said the other priority area for him was to see the university develop as a green spot. “The university will be having an eco-friendly campus within a year even as it has already been having so many trees and greenery,” said the vice-chancellor.

On being asked that how would the people associate themselves with any team, which consists of the players from all over the country as well as the other countries, Irfan said, “There would not be any predicament for the fans. Definitely, people will support the local teams but as the other teams would also have other Indian stars, so it would be more exciting to see them in action against each other. I am sure that the matches would be very entertaining as no player can afford to disappoint his fans”.

Over his preparations for the shortest version of the game, Irfan said he was preparing according to the demands of the twenty20 matches. “The preparation is altogether different as one gets a short duration to deliver his maximum.
