Train skips station due to signal fault

Ambala, March 21
The passengers waiting to board and alight Saharanpur-Nangal Dam passenger train were in for a rude shock when the train zipped past the Ambala Cantonment railway station this morning without making its scheduled halt.

The train went through the station creating panic among the passengers, especially the daily passengers who commute between Saharanpur and Ambala as there was no signal for the incoming train and it ran through an abandoned platform instead of its prescribed platform No. 2, eyewitnesses said. The train, however, was stopped in the yard about 2 km away from the station after passengers raised hue and cry.

It was brought back to the platform from where the passengers got down and boarded the train for their onward journey towards Nangal Dam.

The daily commuters association has complained of the incident to the Railway authorities, as it not only put them in inconvenience but also put a question mark on the safe running of trains.

However, station manager R.N. Meena stated that today’s incident was due to some operational defect and an inquiry would be held into the incident. The ADRM has also taken the matter seriously and sought a report. — UNI

‘Sur Bahaar’ emanates melodic fervour
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, March 21
The intended emotions soaked in a collection of ghazals found their expression in romantic fervour and rich melodic appeal as the Mumbai-based playback and ghazal singer, Seema Anil Sehgal, casted a spell at a musical soiree at the Law Bhavan, here today. The captivating programme veritably titled 'Sur Bahaar' was organised by the Pracheen Kala Kendra to promote ghazal and literary singing. Kendra vice-chairman S.K. Monga and Sajal Koser welcomed the chief guest, Justice Permod Kohli, Judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court, who lighted the traditional ‘Jyoti’ and honoured the artists.

Seema commenced the recital with an invocatory to goddess through a Dogri bhajan to seek blessings and also giving a feel of her grounding in the Dogri folk with an honest appeal.

Instead of delving into the romanticism Seema chose to bring alive the realties of contemporary daily life in the soulful rendition of Dr Sagar Azmi’s ghazal, “Ab to hamare ghar ka yeh mahaul ho gaya , Rishton ka ehtram bhi lafzon mein kho gya”, weaved in raag Pilu.

She maintained the same rational thought in Dr Bashir Badr, “Khuda humko aisi khudayi na de ke apne siwa kuch dikhayi na ,” The softness and purity of her voice was revealed in the next compositions of Sahir Ludhianvi, Faiz Mohammad Faiz, Mirza Ghalib, Vali Aasi, Dushyant Kumar and others.

Her life partner Anil Sehgal, a versatile poet critic and litterateur with five degrees in his kitty, interspersed the renditions with critical literary appreciation while Vijay Vashisht of the AIR compeered the concert with admirable competence.

Prof Murlidhar Soni led the accomplished musicians, including Avirbhav Verma.
