Delegates of peace march welcomed in Ambala
Ambala, March 4 The president of Haryana unit of IDPD, Dr D.S. Jaspal, president of local unit of IMA, Dr Ashok Sarwal, and large number of doctors of Ambala were present. IMA unit organised a dinner in the honour of the delegates in Kingfisher tourist centre at Ambala City. The delegates which include around 70 medical students belonged to Nepal, Bangladesh, Germany, Australia, Ukraine and several other countries. The delegates will participate in the conference to be held in New Delhi from March 7. One of the delegates of the peach march said the aim of their march was to persuade the developing countries to improve health care in their countries. |

ITI students hold rally, burn Badal’s effigy
Bassi Pathana, March 4 The students, led by local president Hardeep Singh, held a rally on the campus. Punjab Student's Union president Beant Singh strongly criticised the policy of the state government to hand over the ITIs in the state to private sector. He said earlier the government had decided to hand over only six ITIs to private sector but now they have decided to hand over all the ITIs of the state. He said all over the state, the ITIs would observe two-day complete strike and if the government did not withdraw the orders, the
agitation would be intensified. Later, the students marched towards the main bus stand and held a demonstration and burnt the effigy of Parkash Singh Badal. They also disrupted traffic. |

Dera Bassi, March 4 He said the courses would be offered to all those students who are doing various graduation and post-graduate courses from the university. The courses would be of maximum six months duration and would be simultaneously taken up by the students. He also asked the college principal Vipan Sobti to give the university a list of the courses which the college would be able to run. The convocation was held after a gap of one year. It could not be held last year due the assembly elections last year. As many as 214 students were awarded degrees during the convocation. |

Farmer shot at
Ambala, March 4 While Randhawa is recuperating at the civil hospital, Ambala Cantonment, Rana was arrested and remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody by a court in Ambala city. The police have also arrested Satpal Rana’s son Sukha and another resident of the village Ram Chander Sharma. All three have been sent to 14 days’ judicial custody. The incident occurred late yesterday night when Parvinder Rana parked his car near the bus stop of the village. He was accompanied by his nephew Sukhraj Randhawa. An altercation took place between the two over the parking of the car. The sarpanch, sources stated, then went and got his rifle and shot twice at Parvinder. |

Bollywood celebrities to attend charity
match
Chandigarh, March 4 Named as “Triumph’08- T20 Charity Cricket match-saluting the iron will of paralympians’- this event has been organised with a focus to raise funds for the physically challenged sportspersons of Punjab. Chief Minister, Punjab, Parkash Singh Badal and Rajinder Kaur Bhattal would be the non-playing captains of SAD/BJP and Congress teams, respectively. Though, the team members would be finalised by March 9, the expected legislators to represent SAD team would be Manpreet Badal, Bikram Singh Majithia, Adesh Pratap Singh Kairon, Sukhpal Singh Nannu, to name a few. However, the Congress team did not disclose their expected team members. Addressing mediapersons at Punjab Bhawan, Sector 3, here today, Parminder Singh Dhindsa, PWD B&R minister, and also the president of the Paralympic Committee of Punjab, said this match would be played between the teams of the parliamentarians and legislators of the ruling and the opposition parties of Punjab. To add entertainment tinge to the event, special live performances would be organised by the celebrities of Punjab. The president claimed that they are expecting some Bollywood celebrities, which includes Priety Zinta, Jimmy Shergill and Rawalpindi express Shoaib Akhtar. The commentators would be former cricketer and TV personality Navjot Singh Sidhu and comedians Jaspal Bhatti and Bhagwant Mann. Bikram Singh Majithia, cabinet minister, Punjab, representing the SAD team said the vision was to provide facilities to improve the lifestyle of the disabled people by opening new training centres and generating means for them to earn their livelihood. Rana Gurmeet Sodhi, MLA, Guru Har Sahai constituency, said the match would be played according to the stipulated rules and regulations of the game and would be in proper team dress code with embroidered emblem. The Congress team would be attired in tracksuit having white background with orange and green stripes while the SAD team would be seen in blue tracksuit with yellow stripes on it. |

Sports meet flagged off at CCET
Chandigarh, March 4 Mohan hoisted the CCET flag and took salute of the march past. The students of SPWD scheme, diploma and degree wing took part in the march past. Krishna Mohan also gave away prizes to the winners of state and national-level competitions. All participants of the sports meet took oath. Public relations director and joint secretary of education Vivek Atray was the guest of honour at the function. The sports meet is a two-day affair that comprises mainly of track and field games. |

Chandigarh, March 4 The UT home secretary Krishna Mohan has directed all the head of departments in regard of the directions received from the ministry of personnel, public grievances and pensions for the participation of UT employees in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October 2010. He further added that if any pre-participation coaching camp was held in connection with the above-mentioned events and the government servant was required to attend the same, this period would also be treated as on duty. |

Five in dock for forging documents
Chandigarh, March 4 Police said the accused not only fraudulently obtained signatures of members of the association, but also faked signatures of some person who had died. According the police, Manmohan Singh, general secretary of an association of motor market mechanics in Manimajra, lodged a complaint alleging that some person had forged documents to become office-bearers of the association. The association had purchased 14 acres of land in Zirakpur a few years ago at a very nominal price. Now with the boom in real estate prices in Zirakpur, price of the land is considerably higher. The accused named in the complaint include Kedar Nath Sethi, Satpal Sidhu, Kuljit Singh, Manpreet Singh and Subhash. Giving details about the modus operandi of the accused, police said they called a meeting of members of the association in a temple in the motor market. They kept a register at the gate and asked the members, who had come to attend the meeting, to sign it before entering. The unsuspecting members put their signatures in the register and the accused later drafted a resolution, thus changing the office bearers of the association. They later changed the content on the pages signed by the members. SHO of Manimajra police station Hari Kumar said during inquiry it was found that the accused had also faked signatures of persons who were no longer living. A case of forgery has been registered and police said addresses given by the accused were not true
and efforts were on to trace them. Meanwhile, in another case, Harish Sharma of Shimla has lodged a police complaint alleging that Priti, Nisha and R.Singh, all residents of Sector 22-D, had taken Rs 40,000 from him to provide a loan of Rs 30 lakhs. The accused neither provided him loan nor returned his money. A case of cheating and criminal conspiracy, under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, has been registered at Sector 17 police station. |

Chandigarh, March 4 Various activities, including essay-writing competition, short-story writing, poetry writing, quiz competition, western dance and group dances, followed thereafter. In his brief address, Surjewala observed that national perspective should be reflected in whatever the students do and such concerns would further equip them for undertaking bigger challenges in life. VC R.C. Sobti exhorted the students to involve themselves in creative pursuits, complimented them for organising a national festival and hoped that they would continue to do such eventful programmes. Prof Naval Kishore, dean student welfare, Prof Nishtha Jaswal, dean student welfare (Women), Prof Surinder Sharma, cultural advisor, Prof V.K. Walia, cultural coordinator, Prof S.M. Kant, director, youth welfare, and many other faculty members were also present. In essay-writing competition, Meenakshi Dhiman of Government College of Education, Sector 20, bagged the first prize, while Apurva Sharma of Government College of Girls, Sector 11, and Shubhodeep Chakraborty of JNU, New Delhi, got the second prize. In short story-writing competition, Uzma Akhtar of Government College of Education, Sector 20, got first prize, while Nakul Kundra of PU got second prize. In poetry writing competition, Ritu Jain of Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, got first position and Kiran Malhotra of Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, got second prize. In poem recitation, Chandrakant Singh of JNU, Delhi, got first prize and Ritu Jain of Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, bagged second prize. In western dance competition, the team of PU got first position and second prize went to the team of IET, Bhaddal. Chandigarh, March 4 “It is encouraging to see my contribution for the proliferation of meaningful theater with socio-cultural relevance in the region recognised at the highest national level” says Vijay. He attributes his success and this coveted honour to his mentors, the thespian couple of G.S. Channi and Harleen Kohli of CEVA. Vijay has studied through distant education system. He has also authored a book published by CEVA. Credited with over 100 short plays, including twenty directorial assignments, Vijay has conducted theatre workshops even in Gujrat and Rajasthan besides the region. Almost all his plays based on socio-cultural themes like female foeticide, aids, drugs, pollution and dowry menace were evolved during these workshops. |
