The PGI and the municipal corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) seem to have learnt no lesson from the death of junior engineer Ashok Bhandari at the PGI yesterday after being stung by a swarm of bees.

3 cops booked for harassing woman

An ASI, two more policemen and an unidentified youth have been booked by the police on charges of attempting to outrage the modesty of a woman, theft and causing hurt.

Councillor’s husband ‘roughs up’ engineer
Panchkula, February 28
The interference by husbands of municipal councillors in the affairs of the civic body came to the fore when Krishan Nanha, a resident of Sector 21, allegedly roughed up an engineer who was inspecting the works being carried out in the Maheshpur ward.

Local BJP slams rail budget; demands more trains
Chandigarh, February 28
The Chandigarh unit of BJP today slammed the union railway budget, saying it had nothing to offer to Chandigarh residents. Blaming the UPA government for ignoring genuine demands of local people, former local MP Satya Pal Jain said none of the trains that were demanded have been sanctioned. He referred in particular to the need for a third Shatabdi between Chandigarh and Delhi.

Guru’s weapons to be showcased
Chandigarh, February 28
To commemorate the 300th years of the consecration of Guru Granth Sahib (Gurta Gaddi) and heavenly journey (Parlokgaman) of Guru Gobind Singh and to spread the guru’s teachings, “shastras” and other historical articles of Guru Gobind Singh from Takht Sachkhand Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib and from Lakhnor Sahib (Ambala) will be showcased in Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali from March 1 to March 4. These are coming in specially decorated glass buses.

IGP offers sops to cops

The UT inspector-general of police (IGP) S.K. Jain today announced setting up of recreational room with a television set to de-stress the force during a Sampark Sabha held at the Sector 26 Police Lines here.

Chandigarh Administration has introduced Management Information System (MIS) in government schools and a decision has also been taken to collect school fee from sampark and gram sampark centres.

From March 3-6, taps will run dry

Water supply to the city will be affected for three days, from March 3 to March 6, because of repair work being undertaken in Mohali for replacement of delivery header.

Competitions mark National Science Day
Mohali, February 28
National Science Day was celebrated at Shastri Model School here today by students of 6th, 7th, and 9th classes. The programme was started with the poster-making, essay-writing and quiz competitions. Some of the students delivered lectures on new inventions of science. Jarnail Singh, former controller, Punjab School Education Board, presided over the function.

MCM staff hold protest

The MCM DAV College Employees’ Union held a protest against the repressive policies of their management on the college campus today. The protest took place on the occasion of the annual prize distribution.

No bullet-proof car for judge, despite HC orders
Chandigarh, February 28
It seems that the cash-rich Chandigarh administration has little funds to arrange for a bullet-proof car for the UT district and sessions judge who pronounced the death sentence on Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) militants for the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh.

A section of lawyers gathered outside the court of judicial magistrate Atul Marya, when an accused, who had allegedly assaulted a lawyer yesterday, was to be produced today. The court sent the accused Ajay Singh, a resident of Sector 46, to one-day police remand.

A local court today sent the prime accused in the UT police assistant sub-inspectors' recruitment paper-leak case to the two-day police remand. The accused Joginder Dahiya was brought to the city from Delhi and was handed over to the police.

‘Inexpensive’ diagnosis of heart diseases among kids

The diagnosis of the rheumatic heart diseases among the children is set to be revolutionised. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Germany-based Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in collaboration with the PGI, is set to create infrastructure for “inexpensive” test for the diagnosis of these diseases among the children.
