MC turns blind eye to encroachments
Tribune News Service

Patiala, February 27
In violation of the municipal corporation rules, at least four shops are illegally being constructed in the Model Town area of the city. The MC officials are looking the other way for reasons best known to them. Earlier, the MC was in soup over unauthorised construction of seven shops and showrooms in the same area. The din had hardly died down and four more structures are coming up in the posh area. The MC, under Mayor Ajit Pal Singh Kohli, had recently established a special team, which was to look into any unauthorised construction that came up within the MC limits. However, despite assurances from the Mayor that no unauthorised constructions would be allowed, these four shops are being built illegally. The senior town planner, who initially was hesitant to speak, later admitted that all the four shops were coming up in an illegal manner and added that the MC had issued notices to the owners of these shops. The MC seems to be turning a blind eye to encroachments. Sources disclosed that there were several shops in the posh Dhillon Marg area, which had encroached upon government land and still no action was taken.

The Patiala Mayor, when contacted said the MC had taken notice of these illegal constructions and proper notices had been served to the owners of these shops.

New strategy to curb crime on anvil
Our Correspondent

Bassi Pathana, February 27
“Police force is dependent on people and nothing concrete can be achieved if people do not cooperate. People should come forward and give information to the police so that crime could be curbed and anti-social elements were controlled,” said Dr Kaustubh Sharma, newly appointed SSP, while interacting with the mediapersons here today.

For public convenience, boxes would be installed at important places, so that common man finds it easy to send suggestions to the police. The keys of these boxes will be with the SSP and he will ensure that these boxes are opened daily.

This practice will make it easy for the police in controlling crime to a great extent.

He said special police helpline cell had been created for the NRIs and the general public.

"People do not have to visit police stations for lodging complaints and FIRs, they can use the box or can directly mailhim at "contactsspfgs@gmail.com." He also added that the identity of the information provider would not be let out.

Samsher Singh Boparai SP (D) said, “SSP's new step will help in curbing the crime making public safer and more secure.”

Hole-in-one feat by 80-year old
Donald Banerjee

Ved Prakash Venayak
Ved Prakash Venayak

Chandigarh, February 27
Eighty-year-old Ved Prakash Venayak created history on the greens of the Chandigarh Golf Club this morning when he achieved a hole-in-one feat on the par-3 11th hole while playing with the Lambas this morning.

Ved Prakash had no inkling about the feat when he took his tee shot on the 11th hole. A good swing saw the ball go sizzling into the skies before landing on the greens to be virtually gobbled up by the hole.

Venayak's caddie realised the importance of the situation and virtually let out an excited cry. Soon the Lambas also congratulated Venayak.

The secretary of the club said Venayak would be honoured with a trophy. Venayak said the feat would have gone unreported had his caddie not told him about recording the incident on the card in the presence of the three teammates, the Lambas.

A Chandigarh-based hotelier settled in England, Venayak was honoured with the Member of the British Empire Award in 1999.

Venayak takes time off from his hotel business in England to be at his Sector-18 residence for six weeks in January and February every year.

The Venayak’s trip to India every year has a charitable purpose.

This year, the Venayaks-Ved and Bimla-have come with a donation of Rs 5 lakh for the Society for the Rehabilitation of Mentally Challenged in Sector 36.

Incomplete sports projects sportsmen’s bane
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 27
It’s been a long wait for tennis enthusiasts of southern sectors. Thanks to the slack attitude of the Chandigarh administration, the project of setting up a tennis court at the Sports Complex, Sector 42, is still waiting completion.

Interestingly the project was started around four years ago but came to a halt due to administrative rigmarole. The final layer of red soil is still to be laid, which would be followed by final rolling.

Apart from this, many other sports projects, including setting up of volleyball and basketball courts and the construction of changing rooms and washrooms for handball players at the complex, a multipurpose hall, the installation of floodlights at tennis courts at Lake Club and renovation of Sports Complex at Sector 7, are yet to see the light of the day despite repeated claims by the authorities for their early completion.

The work on volleyball courts started over a year ago but has been abandoned after the laying of the cinder layers. As for the multipurpose hall at the Lake Club, only its marking has been done. To provide extra time of practice to players, the administration announced the installation of floodlights at Lake Club tennis courts but nothing has been done so far.

“The work which should be completed within months takes years to get completed due to officials’ apathy and administrative rigmarole. With such delays, it is not only sportsmen who suffer but crores of rupee also go waste”, said a sportsperson on condition of anonymity.

On the issue, Inderjit Singh Sandhu, director, Chandigarh Sports Department, said, “In fact lots of formalities are required to complete a project. Last year, our priorities were changed due to the One-Day International between India and Australia held at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium. These projects are in the pipeline and would be completed very soon”.

City to get world-class stadium
Mandeep Puri

Chandigarh, February 27
The municipal corporation, at its house meeting today, decided to build an athletics-cum-football stadium of international standard in the city.

At present, there is no stadium in the city to organise any national and international meet. Moreover, the facilities do not meet the technical and administrative requirements. Though the city has a football stadium, its infrastructure is not up to the mark.

The house formally agreed to the proposal made by nominated councillor Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri (retd). According to Chandigarh mayor Pardeep Chhabra, building the stadium would certainly motivate new players. “I have already had a word with Pawan Kumar Bansal, minister of state for finance, and he has no objection to this. Even the UT administrator has given a nod to the proposal,” said Chhabra.

According to Brig Kuldip Singh (retd), the land (8 acres) reserved for the construction of the proposed stadium in the southern sector is not only insufficient, but the location is also a drawback. The city is losing the footprints of international football players and athletes, which is a matter of concern for the sports department,” added Chandpuri.

Admn turns down Kapil’s request to set up academy
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 27
Former captain of the Indian cricket team Kapil Dev has been cold shouldered by the administration.

His request to open a cricket academy at the Sector-16 stadium, where he honed his skills, has been turned down.

Inderjit Singh Sandhu, director, Chandigarh sports department, said, “We got a request from Kapil to set up a cricket academy for the budding players at the stadium last month. But his request was turned down, as we did not want to give anyone ‘exclusive rights’ of the stadium. We are open to provide the stadium to anyone for holding matches or tournaments but not for other purposes.”

When asked whether the cricketer, who is currently the chairman of the executive board of the Indian Cricket League (ICL), wanted to open an academy for the ICL, Sandhu denied: “There was no mention of the ICL in the letter. What Kapil had mentioned was that he wanted to give back to the city players what he had learnt from the game. As he honed his cricketing skills at the stadium, he wanted to set up an academy here.”

On being asked whether the administration would allow the ICL to hold matches at the stadium, Sandhu said, “Certainly, anyone can use our stadium but on terms and conditions prescribed by the administration.”

Rock is mixture of various cultures: Parikrama
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, February 27
For raising funds in aid of the economically weaker children suffering from heart ailments, the Spice Telecom has again teamed up with the rotary and the city Rotaract Club for the third consecutive year to bring to the city ‘Rotary Heartline concert’.

Prior to their performance at the Leisure valley, artists of the renowned international rock ensembles ‘Parikrama’ and Indi Rock-pop, Bandish, interacted with mediapersons at Aroma hotel here today.

“Vocal oriented rock popular music genre is the product of many sub-cultures tracing the origin of rock during the fifties”, maintains Sabeer Malik and Christopher, lead artists and composers of Parikarma and Bandish bands, respectively.

The self proclaimed “Gurus” while talking to The Tribune disclosed that though the Rock form was pioneered and propagated by maestros like Black Chuck, Elvis Presley, Beatles and many more in the alien lands but the musical affinities seemingly blurred the geographical lines to see the popularity of rock in India.

We have strived hard to cultivate the western rock genre adding softening influences of Indian sublime music, the Indian classical and traditional to make it acceptable to Indian milieu, chips in Shambu Nath Bhattacharji, the Tabla exponent and known classicist.

Credited with over 1,000 performances, we are reining supreme in English rock for the last seventeen years while many groups had packed up, says Sabeer of Parikarma. Our super hit “But it rained” has created many records, he claims.

Sabeer says generating a crazy audience for rock music is more challenging in India attuned to the rich classical, ghazal, light film or regional folk music. But, the idea to float the Indi-pop ensemble “Bandish” clicked well and we are in tune with the time, says the elated Christopher, composer of eight albums and former artist of Euphoria band.

Bandish offers something for everyone from pure rockers to hip-hoppers. Both the bands often fuse Indian classical music instruments like mridangam, tabla, and flute with conventional instruments like guitar, drums, and keyboard. The band is credited for improvising Pink Floyd songs highest among all. A Parikrama original “Rhythm and Blues” was created in course of their jam session with Usha Uthup. Parikrama has also performed with Saif Ali Khan in New Delhi, said Sabeer Malik.
