In a major move today, the board of directors of Chandigarh Housing Board decided to make transactions of its dwelling units hassle-free.

Excise policy notified

The Chandigarh administration today formally notified the excise policy that was announced last month. Under the excise policy for 2008-2009, the administration today made it clear that the licensing system to allot vends would continue. This year again, the number of vends would increase slightly.

Councillor’s house surveyed for tax evasion

Income tax sleuths today surveyed the residence of C.B. Goyal, a local councillor and industrialist, for alleged evasion of income tax during the marriage of his son on February 10 at Parade Ground, Sector 5. Goyal is former president of the Haryana Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

School timings to change from Feb 22
Chandigarh, February 20
School timings will change from February 22; an announcement in this regard was made by the education department . According to S.K. Setia DPI (S), “Single-shift schools will begin at 8 am and finish at 2 pm and double-shift schools will be from 7.30 am to 1.15 pm, whereas the timings for evening shift will be from 1.30 pm to 5.30 pm.” This decision will be implemented in all government and private schools.

Issuing notice of motion for March 21 on controversial admission of a girl student to MCA in the department of computer science and applications, the Punjab and Haryana High Court, has directed that the girl student be allowed to attend classes.

Work on highway to be over by Sept-end, NHAI tells HC
Chandigarh, February 20
The work of constructing flyovers and widening of the highway to Delhi is expected to be over by September-end. At least this is what the contractor, entrusted with the task, told a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the highway broadening and anti-encroachment case.

DK Vision fined Rs 15,000
Chandigarh, February 20
Complying with the orders of the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, has directed DK Vision Pvt Limited, Sector 8, to pay Rs 15,000 as compensation to a city-based resident for unfair trade practices.

AG Punjab lift trophy

Chandigarh, February 20
All-round performance by Navdeep Singh (33 runs and 4 for 36) helped AG Punjab to lift the trophy, beating hosts AG Haryana in the final of the North Zone IA and AD Cricket Tournament today. The tournament is being played at DAV College, Sector 10.
Batting first, AG Punjab scored 175 for 8 in the allotted 35 overs. Arun Tuli was the highest scorer with 51 runs. In reply, Haryana were bundled out for 140 in 33 overs.

Ruchi sprints to victory

Gagandeep of BA III was declared the ‘Player of the Year’ while Ruchi Sharma of BA I was adjudged the best athlete during the 52nd Annual Athletic Meet held at Government College for Girls, Sector 11, on the college campus here today. Padma Shri Kamaljit Kaur Sandhu Koonar, director, National Institute of Sports, Patiala, was the chief guest, who gave away the prizes.

Nakas, patrolling not helping
Chandigarh, February 20
Snatching continues unabated in spite of intensified patrolling and anti-snatching nakas across the city. Four incidents of snatchings were reported this afternoon, that, too, in broad daylight.

Police action against false snatching complaints
Panchkula, February 20
Two false cases of snatchings have come to light during the last couple of weeks in the region following which, the local police has started proceedings against the complainants.

Two kids held for stealing
Panchkula, February 20
The local police today arrested two children for allegedly stealing a briefcase from a car at Mansa Devi Complex. According to police, complainant Vinod Kumar, a resident of Rally village, Sector 12, was sitting in his car when the kids told him that oil was leaking from his car.

Man held guilty of abetting suicide
Chandigarh, February 20
Additional district and sessions judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi today convicted Bachhatar Singh, holding him guilty for abetting suicide. His sisters Mati and Laddi were acquitted. The quantum of sentence would be pronounced on February 23.
