New Delhi, February 15
The Crime Branch of Delhi police today arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Delhi police Ravinder Kumar Singh for extorting a sum of Rs 19.85 lakh from Dr Upender, one of the main accused in the kidney scam, and letting him off on January 7.

Seven gunned down in US varsity
A gunman dressed in black emerged from behind a curtain at a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University (NIU) on Thursday and shot 21 persons, seven of them fatally, before killing himself. The university confirmed that the shooter was an NIU graduate student in sociology in the spring of 2007 but was not currently enrolled.

In India, at least 1,000 women are believed to be killed annually in the name of honour. Taking a serious view of the menace, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has called for attention to the issue and expressed hope that the practice would be “stamped out” like ‘sati’ with state and society’s intervention.

After a split opinion, the Election Commission today served a notice on Congress president Sonia Gandhi on a disqualification complaint against her for receiving a Belgian honour, triggering a political row. The three-member commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswamy, asked her to respond within three weeks.

SC refuses to stay verdict on Sikhs
New Delhi, February 15
The Supreme Court today refused to stay the Punjab and Haryana High Court judgment, which held that Sikhs were not a minority community in Punjab. A Bench headed by the Chief Justice K.G. Balkrishnan issued notice to Sahil Mittal, a resident of Sangrur on whose writ, the High Court had struck down state government’s notification permitting the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to give 50 per cent reservation to Sikh students in colleges run by it.
