Scheme for landless farmers launched
Many get land ownership documents at R-Day functions
Ludhiana, January 27
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal yesterday launched a scheme for granting proprietary rights to landless farmers, who had been tilling about 42,000 acres of evacuee land in the state since long, on the payment of a nominal price. He handed over land ownership documents to 15 such farmers to mark the 59th Republic Day here.

The Governor, Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), gave a clarion call to the people of Punjab to renew their resolve to contribute to the task of building up a “new India” and making the state a front-runner in the development race in the country.

Farmers feel overlooked
Chandigarh, January 27
Farmers are upset as no one from amongst them has been chosen for the Padma awards. Industrialists, politicians, artistes, sportspersons, social activists and others are in the list of Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibushan awardees made public on the eve of the Republic Day by the union government, but not a single farmer has been selected for such national honour.

Subsidies on some schemes need review: Manpreet
Hoshiarpur, January 27
To bring the state’s economy on the right track, subsidies on certain schemes have to be reviewed for boosting the financial position of the government. Minister for finance, planning and programme implementation, Punjab, Manpreet Singh Badal stated this at a press conference here yesterday.

Power crisis to continue: CM
Ludhiana, January 27
Power crisis will continue for the next three years until new power generation projects are functional. This was stated by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal after unfurling the Tricolour here yesterday. However, Badal said the shortage would not be as acute as last year in view of good snowfall this season. The state would get 500 MW power from Lehra Mohabbat Micro Hydel Plant by April this year.

Turban row: Sikh leadership sent ‘wrong message’
Chandigarh, January 27
London-based writer Nirpal Singh Shergill, who challenged the ban on turban in French schools, said the French government had not given a firm assurance to the union government on lifting the ban on turban in government-aided French schools.

Excess wheat to be released to Central pool
Chandigarh, January 27
The excess stock of wheat procured for the atta-dal scheme is likely to be released to the Central pool to clear a part of dues of Markfed and Punsup. Markfed had procured wheat and Punsup had procured pulses and wheat for the scheme.

The Dhuri police today recovered a four-month male foetus from a vacant piece of land of the Janta Nagar locality at Dhuri.

Five days after the recovery of missing boy Lokesh’s body near the railway track close to the Bashirpura crossing, his autopsy report confirmed that he had been murdered with sharp-edged weapons.

In spite of a high-level probe into the sale and partition of shamlat land across the state, brother of a former minister in the Congress government, who allegedly facilitated the sale of shamlat land in village Hoshiarpur here has now helped the owner to “occupy” the land despite a stay from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
