India and France today took a significant step forward in bolstering their strategic partnership when they announced finalising negotiations for reaching a bilateral agreement for civil nuclear cooperation and taking their defence cooperation “beyond a buyer-seller relationship.”

Kidney racket in Gurgaon, 5 held
Gurgaon, January 25
The police has unearthed a kidney transplant racket with the arrest of five persons, including a doctor and quack, after a raid at a private hospital in Gurgaon yesterday night. The gang involved in the racket not only catered to the demands of kidney in India but also of Nepal, Lebanon, Dubai and Greece.

Bird flu in Howrah, Purulia
Kolkata, January 25
Bird flu has spread to two more districts of Howrah and Purulia, bringing the number of districts hit by the disease in West Bengal to nine. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said he called up agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and sought an active participation of the Centre to arrest the situation in the state.

Remand for Gangster Brijesh
New Delhi, January 25
Inter-state gangster Brijesh Singh, arrested by the Delhi police from Bhubaneswar, was today remanded in 12-day police custody by a court here. “In view of the facts and circumstances of the case, custodial interrogation of the accused is granted till February 4,” chief metropolitan magistrate Sanjeev Jain said.

Mastermind of UP blasts killed in Udhampur ambush
Udhampur, January 25
In a big success, the security forces killed self-styled commander Bashir Ahmed alias Sabah, who was alleged mastermind of the Uttar Pradesh serial blasts, in an encounter here late last night. The self-styled supreme commander of the Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (HuJI) was engaged in an ambush, which lasted for one hour, with the commandos of the state police at Khushal village at Chatroo area in Kishtawar district.
