2 get life term for trader-scribe’s murder
Kaithal, January 19 The judge sentenced the third person, Umesh, to rigorous imprisonment of four years and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 5,000. The court had convicted Geong and Surinder Pahalwan under section 302 of the IPC and Umesh under section 212 of the IPC earlier this week. Parmanand Goel, a sawmill owner and correspondent for a Hindi daily, was murdered by three persons at his residence near the new grain market here on September 18, 2003. The gang, headed by Geong, had demanded Rs 30 lakh from Parmanand Goel and on his refusal to give the amount murdered him. As many as 29 cases of murder, kidnapping, extortion, robbery and dacoity are still pending against Geong. Umesh was convicted for harbouring the murderers. Naveen Goel, younger son of the deceased, who was an eyewitness to the murder, said after the judgement that his family would move the Punjab and Haryana High Court to seek the death sentence for Geong and Surinder Pahalwan. The murder of Parmanand Goel had created tension in this area as his family had accused the then Chief Minister of Haryana Om Parkash Chautala and the then Kaithal SP Yoginder Nehra of having conspired to eliminate him. Several journalists' organisations had protested against the murder. The then IG (Haryana range) and the state vigilance bureau had conducted a probe into the case. The deceased’s sons, Naresh Goel and Naveen Goel, even moved the high court seeking a CBI probe into the murder. However, their plea was rejected. |
Bajpai is new VC of KU
Chandigarh, January 19 The position fell vacant after Prof R.P. Hooda, the earlier VC, was selected for the vice-chancellorship of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in November last year. According to sources, scientist Bajpai’s name was “strongly” recommended by the Haryana government and has been cleared by Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai. His name was among three names suggested by the search committee comprising vice-chancellor of Chaudhary Devi Lal University, Sirsa, K.C. Bhardwaj, and secretary, education, Rajan Gupta after a meeting held recently. Credited with setting up the nanotechnology laboratory at the Central Scientific Instruments Organisation in Chandigarh during his stint as its director, he was chosen to head GJU in August, 2005. However, ever since Professor Hooda moved out of KU, there was speculation that Dr Bajpai would be moved in as the VC of KU in this game of musical chairs on for the headship of universities in the state. This matter was temporarily laid to rest after a search committee comprising Bhardwaj, Gupta and Bajpai was announced by the government for the selection of the KU vice-chancellor. Meanwhile, according to the orders of the Governor, Gupta was officiating as KU VC while the search for a new head was on. At its recent meeting, Bhardwaj and Gupta shortlisted the names of a few prospective candidates who would fit the bill as KU VC. Since Dr Bajpai did not attend the meeting and was a keen contender for the post, the selection committee recommended the names of L.N. Dahiya, pro-vice-chancellor at MDU, Rohtak, considered the top-runner till then, R.S. Chaudhary, a chemistry professor at the same university, and that of Bajpai as well. The three names were sent to the office of the Haryana Governor for his stamp on the appointment. It is learnt that he, too, has cleared the name of Bajpai for the post. With his appointment, a second round of musical chairs is likely to begin to fill the position of VC of
GJU, Hisar, vacated by him. |
Demolition drive plan keeps residents tense
Fatehabad, January 19 Residents, all poor labourers, were prepared for an armed confrontation, but the revenue authorities did not turn up as the city police station did not provide police help to them. Civil Judge (Senior Division) Anita Dahiya has now directed the revenue authorities to hand over the possession of the land to the decree holder after razing the houses made on it by January 22. The judge has also summoned the SHO of city police station to appear in court on January 23 and explain reasons for not providing police help to the revenue authorities. The residents, it is learnt, have been living in these houses for the past 60 years. They said they paid for the land before constructing their houses, unaware of the fact that the man who sold those plots was fighting a legal battle with some other parties for the ownership rights of the
land. Suren Singh and others, who eventually won the legal battle, had filed an execution petition in the court of Anita Dahiya for the possession of the land. Ironically, the residents are too poor and ignorant to have contested the case or filed an appeal against the court orders though they had the possession of the land since long. The revenue authorities were supposed to hand over the possession of land to Suren Singh and others after knocking down the houses today, but the city police station did not provide police force to the authorities looking into the sensitive nature of the case. Armed with kerosene oil and wooden logs, the residents said the authorities would have to walk over their dead bodies to raze their houses. Local leaders of all political parties, including Atam Parkash Mehta of the Congress, Om Parkash Ralhan of the BJP, Ram Kumar Bahbalpuria of the CPM and former local municipal councilor Dalip Singh
Bedharak, guarded the area in support of the residents. Though the destruction was put off for today, a Damocles sword hangs over their heads as the revenue authorities are now supposed to demolish their houses by January 22. |

Bird flu scare hits poultry sales
Jind, January 19 Though there is a very minor drop in the overall business at the production level, rates of poultry products, including eggs and chicken, have gone down sharply at the consumer end. The district has over a dozen hatcheries and at least 100 poultry farms. “While the overall consumption of poultry products has not been extraordinarily high here in comparison to other districts of the state, the district has emerged as a frontrunner in matter of production and supply of such products,” said Rattan Singh, a poultry farmer. Claiming that the fear of bird flu had started haunting minds of a majority of farmers because of a drop in demand of poultry products, he said the fear of the disease had not hit breeders or owners of hatcheries, who supply chicks to them as there had been no remarkable decrease in the rate of the product. He said the price of one piece of chick was now hovering around Rs 14 against the rate, which had been between Rs 17 and 18 earlier. Stating that though there had been no report of outbreak of bird flu from anywhere in the state so far, he claimed that the chicks here had been already prone to a viral fever, which had caused death of a large number of small birds recently. He said small and medium farmers would be affected the most if bird flu hits the district and no safety cover had been provided at any level by government authorities. “I lost over 1,000 chicks in the past week due to a viral disease for which no drug or medicine was available in the market,” he said. A member of the Poultry Farmers Association here said the district had only half a dozen farms, which supplied eggs in the market, while a majority of the supply comes from Ambala district. There had been around 10 per cent negative affect on the overall business so far after the reports of bird flu in West Bengal. |

UP farmer’s crop varieties a rage in Haryana
Rohtak, January 19 On a mission to free the farming sector from market-dependence, he has distributed scores of self-developed high-yielding crop varieties among about 10 lakh farmers of many states. Raghuvanshi’s efforts were acknowledged at the highest level last year when he was honoured by the then President Dr A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, with a national award under the National Innovation Foundation. “The farmers should adopt self-developed seeds and manure instead of depending upon external agencies like private companies for the basic farm inputs,” observed Raghuvanshi while talking to The Tribune here today. “Seeds are produced in farmer’s field and not in any factory or laboratory,” asserted the visionary farmer, who has himself developed as many as 100 varieties of wheat, 10 each of paddy and arhar, besides those of several other fruit and vegetables. These crop varieties are getting increasingly popular in Haryana as well, with a number of farmers coming forward to adopt them. “These crops are a class apart from the ones we had been using in our fields for long,” said Dinesh Kumar, a farmer from Manoli village in Sonepat district. “Raghuvanshi’s crop varieties are also popular in Kaithal, Kurukshetra, Rohtak and many other parts of the state,” claims Kamal Jeet, executive officer, Sristi Gyan Kendra, Rohtak, which had invited the progressive farmer to the town. The good results are now being authenticated, with agencies like the Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Banaras Hindu University and Kanpur University. |
