Trader prevents unloading of coal for 3rd day
Musclemen try to take possession of wagons

A renewed effort by a controversial coal merchant of Assam to infiltrate the coal trade worth nearly Rs 2.50 crore (daily) at the Ludhiana dry port led to violence this morning when his men tried to prevent labourers from unloading coal from the racks.

Snow at Shimla
In midwinter this season while reading the novel “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” by Ernest Hemingway, I am reminded of the snows of Shimla. About 50 years ago, Shimla used to have frequent snowfalls during the months of December, January and February. Sometimes it could be quite heavy, covering the roads with a thick woolly carpet. It was a treat to walk on the freshly-laid snow, pushing down the fluffy layer with the feeling of a path-finder. Later, the pressed down snow turned into a passage, much traveled upon.

The registration of a kidnapping case against suspended District Forest Officer R.R. Kakkar and five other officials of the forest department, Punjab, seem to have been registered out of political pressure, a city court observed.

Drug peddler held, 1.5 kg opium seized
Mandi Ahmedgarh, January 18
The Ludhiana (Rural) police has arrested a drug peddler who had been active in this area for the past couple of years. Sleuths of the narcotic cell arrested Santokh Singh of Malai village, Sirsa (Haryana), from near the drain bridge at Dangian village in Ludhiana district yesterday evening. About 1.5 kg of opium was seized from his possession.

Gold goes missing from ring ceremony
Ludhiana, January 18
Celebrations during the ring ceremony of Paramveer Singh, a Canada-based NRI and owner of Bharat Mechanical Industries, Moga, turned sour when a suitcase containing 300 gm of gold jewellery worth over Rs 3 lakh went missing this afternoon.
