Ansals tamper with proof: Cops
New Delhi, January 18 Filing the charge-sheet before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate A.K. Kohar, the police pointed fingers at the role of Sushil and Gopal Ansal in tampering with the evidence pertaining to the case. The case will come up for hearing on Feb 15. The Delhi High Court May 5, 2006 - on an application filed by the Association of Victims of Uphaar tragedy (AVUT) - had ordered the police to lodge an FIR and investigate the matter thoroughly. Earlier, a lower court had convicted a court staff, Dinesh Sharma, of tampering with documents, which showed that the Ansals were involved in the day-to-day running of the movie hall. Twelve accused, including Sushil and Gopal Ansal, were convicted by the trial court Nov 20 last year for criminal negligence in the Uphaar theatre fire, which killed 59 people during the screening of a movie June 13, 1997.

Sales tax official harassed
Faridabad, January 18 Sharma said the neighbour had damaged his makeshift sewerage system and heaped garbage near the entrance of his house. His family members consisting of his wife, 70-year old mother, two grown-up daughters and sons have to go to another neighbour’s place to ease themselves. He has to park his vehicles in the neighbourhood. Adarsh Nagar Colony, which was approved a few years back, still does not have a laid- sewerage system. As a result, the residents dig pits for septic tanks. Sharma said that his neighbour demolished the tank on December 22, in spite of the court’s stay order. He said that on account of his neighbour’s intimidation, he had to move court thrice ever since he purchased a plot in the colony and set up house. Now, he has complained to the National Human Rights Commission. Sharma has told the commission that he and his family members fear the worst from the neighbour, who had been intimidating his family for the past more than a decade. His lament is that neither the police nor the state Chief Minister had responded to his complaint. |

Baalu to open Gurgaon-Delhi road
New Delhi, January 18 The access-controlled stretch has been making headlines, especially as people inaugurated it this week after waiting endlessly for its formal opening. Though NHAI officials did not allow it to be used for vehicular traffic after “people’s inauguration”, speculation was rife on who will now inaugurate the “already-inaugurated” stretch. It prompted a high-level meeting in the Capital today. In fact, the meeting was held following “instructions” from Baalu himself. Ministry officials say that the road transport and highways secretary held a review of the progress on the access-controlled stretch. The NHAI chairman, senior officers of ministry and NHAI, Concessionaire and Independent Consultant from M/s RITES were present in the review.
During the review, it was reported that major works of the facility were completed on December 31, but some safety-related components such as provision of crash barriers, completion of left in - left out configuration at
Kapashera, removal of scaffoldings at some locations, back-up power supply particularly for street lighting and toll operations, system for tolling and that for operations and maintenance (O&M) of the corridor were remaining so that statutory tests could be undertaken by the Independent Consultant. The Concessionaire said the work was continuing round the clock to complete all these remaining jobs and assured that these works and other activities would be completed by the evening so that an independent engineer could undertake the mandatory safety, reliability and integrity tests.
Based on the commitment given by the Concessionaire that all requirements would be fulfilled by January 23, it was decided that Delhi-Gurgaon access control facility on NH-8 in its entirety would be opened the very same day at 4 pm by the minister in the presence of Haryana and Delhi Chief Ministers. |

Blueline mows down elderly man
New Delhi, January 18 The bus, plying on route no. 816 between Uttam Nagar and Malkaganj, killed 65-year-old Satya Singh at Moti Nagar crossing in West Delhi, when the bus hit the rickshaw, on which he was seated. Singh fell from the rickshaw and was run over by the rear wheel of the bus. He was going with his daughter-in-law to visit a doctor. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his head injuries. His daughter-in-law suffered minor injuries. The rickshaw puller and the driver of the killer bus escaped from the scene. “A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against the driver and a search is on to nab him. The bus owner has been called for interrogation,” said a police official. The 4,000-odd Blueline bus fleet, a crucial part of Delhi’s public transport system, has earned public ire for the recklessness of drivers and owners, but officials say they are helpless to check the menace. In 2007, the Bluelines had claimed 120 lives. The Blueline claimed the first victim of 2008 last Saturday in East Delhi. |

She rebuffed me so I killed her: Help
New Delhi, January 18 “Pawan during his interrogation revealed he had proposed to the victim twice in the past six months and each time she strongly rebuffed his advances and also threatened to report him to his employer, her uncle Aneesh Kapoor,” a senior investigating official told IANS on condition of anonymity. Pawan Kumar was arrested Thursday for the murder of Surabhi Kapoor, an aspiring air hostess, in her home in Saraswati Vihar in northwest Delhi. “On Wednesday, Pawan hid himself inside the victim’s house in Rajdhani Enclave. He then entered her room with a knife and a hammer around 2.30 a.m. after ensuring that everyone was fast asleep,” the official said. “Pawan first tried to rape her, but facing severe resistance from her, he stabbed her several times and then hit her with the hammer to make sure that she was dead,” the official added. The investigating official disclosed that Pawan, who is married with two children, had hatched the plot down to the minute detail, but his plans went awry. “Pawan, 32, who was working for Aneesh’s cable service for the past 12 years, didn’t show any regret for the cold-blooded murder. He said he was desperate to have a relationship with Surabhi, but her repeated refusals made him angry. Pawan said he couldn’t bear to see the victim being friendly with any man, so he eliminated her,” the official added. Surabhi stayed in the house with her parents and siblings. Her uncles, Aneesh and Rakesh occupy the other two floors of the house. After killing Surabhi, the man hid himself in a nearby store room and switched on the water motor pump thinking that on hearing the sound someone would wake up and open the door to switch it off, giving him an opportunity to flee. The police said he had also painted his face black, was wearing black clothes and a monkey cap. “Seema, the girl’s mother, who woke up to switch off the pump, noticed a silhouette fleeing from the room. She called her husband and both tried to catch him.” “Pawan, in a bid to escape, then attacked them. Seema had to be given 32 stitches, while Dinesh suffered minor injuries,” the official said. According to the police, after Dinesh shouted for help, his younger brother and a neighbour came up and overpowered Pawan after a brief struggle. Pawan was handed over to the police and the weapons of attack seized from him. Till an hour after catching him, the family hadn’t thought of checking in on Surabhi. When they entered her room, they found her lying in a pool of blood on the bed. Surabhi and her parents were rushed to the nearby Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, where doctors declared Surabhi brought dead. The police official said robbery was not the motive behind the killing as Pawan was taking care of Aneesh’s business completely. “All the monetary transactions were being carried out through Pawan. He was a trustworthy employee for the past 12 years and was enjoying the benefits provided by the family.” “Pawan was close to the family and often dropped Surabhi at her air hostess training institute or at friends’ place,” the official added. — IANS |

New Delhi, January 18 A bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat refused to admit the plea of the father, Hanuman Singh, a resident of Ajmer in Rajasthan. Singh was convicted by a local sessions court for repeatedly raping and sodomising his eldest daughter for over six months in 2000. According to the prosecution, Singh’s estranged wife, Shanti Devi, had registered the rape case against him. Shanti Devi, while leaving her husband’s home for her parent’s house at Kishangarh in Rajasthan, left behind her three children - two daughters and a son. She had been married for 35 years. She, however, used to visit her children occasionally. In September 2000, when she went to meet her children, her eldest daughter began sobbing before her and insisted on going along with her. When Shanti Devi took her daughter to her parent’s house in Kishangarh, the daughter told her how her father had been subjecting her to rape for the last six months and forcing her to keep quiet by emotionally blackmailing her or threatening her with dire consequences. Hanuman had argued before the trial court and the Rajasthan High Court that his daughter was implicating him on false charges. However, both courts refused to believe him. — IANS |
