Kiran for electric crematoriums in state
Chandigarh, January 3 Though the union ministry of environment had been advocating for a long time that all state government and UT administrations should go for electric crematoriums and encourage people to use the modern eco-friendly methods for disposing off their dead, a little has been done in the states in general and Haryana in particular. On an average, six to eight quintals of fuel wood is used for cremating one body. It is not only the wood but also the resultant air pollution of cremating the dead, which can be avoided by increased use of electric crematoriums. “It is a good idea. Some awareness campaigns and construction of electric crematoriums will help in reducing the pressure on our woods,” remarked a senior official of the department of forests and environment. Since Kiran Chaudhary is also the minister for tourism, environment and forests and the idea to celebrate 2008 as eco-friendly year is her own, action on provision of electric crematoriums in the state as a part of the celebrations is likely to be initiated soon, sources said. “As of today, the focus of the entire world is on environment. Greenhouse effect has been worrying every one. We must take notice of hazardous effects of global warming,” said Kiran Chaudhary revealing that the state would double the number of eco clubs in the state from present 2,800. “Once a child is made aware of the environmental degradation because of ecological imbalances, half the battle is won,” she said, adding that competitions in poster making, slogan writing and painting competitions would be organised by all eco clubs. She said ban on polythene bags below the thickness of 30 microns was the beginning. Optimum use of plastic, especially in furniture, was good as it reduced burden on forests. “But polythene bags are not only an environmental horror but are also choking drains, rivers and nullahs and is becoming a major obstruction in recharging of underground water. Talking about the new tourism policy of the state, she said Haryana had become the first state to have such a policy. The tourism sector would get all benefits, which were normally extended to industry as a whole in general, and in backward areas in particular. “Rs 1 lakh spent in tourism generates more jobs than in any other area. Further, tourism and travel industry had been contributing more to the overall GDP growth than any other segment,” she said. Some of the loss bearing complexes, she said, would be handed back to the government. The role of private sector in tourism had been recognised and accepted in the new policy, which promises several incentives, concessions and subsidies at par with the industry for new investments in tourism and travel sector. Benefits like interest free loans, lower rates of change of land use and other such benefits would also be given to those investing in the tourism sector. The government proposes to start a land bank in Gurgaon to start with where probable investors from private sector will be given land on lease on short-term basis, term of which can subsequently be extended. Thanesar, Pehowa, Jagadhri, Panipat, Bhiwani, Hisar and Rewari have been identified as backward areas under the new policy. Since tourism is a multifold engine of growth, it needs money for future plans. |
