Haj flights cancelled due to weather

Srinagar, November 29
Two more Haj flights were cancelled due to poor visibility at the airport here today, while three chartered flights, to carry pilgrims to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, had been
rescheduled.

According to executive officer of the Jammu and Kashmir State Haj Committee, both flights of Wednesday, which were rescheduled for today, were cancelled today also as these could not land at Srinagar airport due to poor visibility. The pilgrims of these flights would depart for Jeddah tomorrow, the executive officer said here. Accordingly the pilgrims of two flights who earlier were scheduled to leave Srinagar for Jeddah today would be flown on December 1, said the officials of the Haj Committee.

Annual Haj flights began with a single daily flight from here on November 11, while arrangements had been made for two daily flights from November 28. However, unfavourable weather conditions came in the way of operation of these flights as per schedule over the past several days.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad at a meeting here last evening reviewed the situation arising out of the cancellation of Haj flights. Azad was informed the director-general civil aviation had changed the criterion for landing at the Srinagar airport from 1.5 km visibility to 2.2 km. The change was made at the behest of foreign pilots who were not ready to land at below 2.2 km visibility. He was told that if the criterion of landing was changed to the last year’s problem of cancellation of flights might not arise. Azad said he would take up the matter with the authorities in Delhi.

Srinagar , November 29
A major fire in Maharaja Ranbir Gunj market today gave a jolt to government's plans to develop the place as a heritage site.

Over 70 shops( According to UNI 75) were gutted as people in the downtown area ran for safety. Raging flames in this ancient market, which traces its origin to the Dogra rulers, are feared to have destroyed some of its old-world sheen. Divisional fire officer Sajjad Ahmed Khan said the fire erupted from one of the shops in the city’s oldest market at 12.30 am last night and soon engulfed others. He said fire fighters took more than three hours to douse the flames.

Finance and planning minister Tariq Hameed Karra on Tuesday announced to develop the place on the lines of Jammu’s Mubarak Mandi complex. However, official sources said the fire would not prove to be of much consequence to their plans.

Karra said the conservation plan for the area would be worked out and implemented under the aegis of the City Development Coordination Committee (CDCC) headed by his ministry. He said government and non-government agencies and experts would be co-opted to draw the conservation plan for the market and it would be implemented in a time-bound manner. The restoration of the area would be started after clearing it of encroachments and bottlenecks.
