Series
New Delhi, October 12 Apart from the three stalwarts, most of the other members of India's current ODI team such as Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, have also been rested from the limited overs tournament to be held in Ahmedabad from October 25 to 28. Virender Sehwag, hoping to force his way back into the national team, has been named as captain of 'India Blue' team while another discard Mohd Kaif will lead the 'India Red' team. Wicket-keeper batsman Parthiv Patel will be at the helm of 'India Green' team. All the players who have joined the rebel Indian Cricket League have expectedly not found a place in any of the three teams announced by BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah through a press release. Although the release did not specify why the senior players were left out, a top BCCI source said it was done only to give them some rest ahead of the series against Pakistan and Australia. Pakistan are scheduled to visit India in November-December for three Tests and five one-dayers which will be followed by the Indian team's tour of Australia. The tournament will provide a chance for pacer Munaf Patel, Suresh Raina among others who are looking to cement their place in the Indian team. Nagpur, October 12 “Why not? The boys are confident. They have come back from 0-2 down in England to level the series 3-3. We will go in with a positive intent and the boys are very confident,” said Rajput two days before the sixth ODI at the VCA Stadium here, which is a do-or-die contest for the hosts. “The boys will have the urge to do well playing at home”, added Rajput, not unaware of the daunting task facing the team considering that India have not beaten Australia in successive ODIs since March, 2001. The last time India had beaten Australia in successive ODIs was at Bangalore in a bilateral series in March, 2001, a win that followed five months after their sensational upset of the World Cup champions in the ICC Champions Trophy quarterfinal at Nairobi in October, 2000, which was their previous clash. Rajput conceded that the team was outplayed totally at Vadodara but insisted it was just a one-off thing. “It was one bad day for us at Vadodara. It was a fantastic new- ball spell from Australians Mitchell Johnson and Brett Lee,” he said. “We lost two wickets in the first over, our top two batsmen, and could not seize the initiative. Everybody knows we played badly,” said the former India opener, referring to the dismissals of Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. “Australia are the best team in the world and they have the best opening bowling combination. In India there’s moisture in the first hour of the day. But they bowled very well and in the right areas”, he said. “Tendulkar batted very well but there was no one to support him after we had lost five wickets for 43,” he pointed out. Rajput felt that the key to the Indian batting clicking was a solid opening stand. “Our main aim would be not to lose wickets in the first 10 overs. Whenever we have had a good opening partnership we have put up a good total,” he said.

SA clinch series
Lahore, October 12 Pakistan, set a mammoth 457 to win, finished the final day on 316-4 with Younis Khan scoring a brilliant 130 and Mohammad Yousuf marking his return to the team with a
stylish 63. Former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq smashed his bat in frustration after falling agonisingly short of Javed Miandad’s Pakistan Test run aggregate record in his final international appearance. Inzamam, who quit one-day cricket and left captaincy after Pakistan’s first-round exit from the World Cup in March, lasted just two deliveries. The Proteas last won a major series in South Asia seven years ago when they beat India. They won the first Test by 160 runs in Karachi last week. The master batsman, who finished with 8,830 runs, including 25 hundreds, in 120 Tests, later broke his bat in the dressing room in a fit of anger. He fell three short of surpassing Miandad’s landmark. Proteas suffer
racial abuse
The day was marred by racial abuse hurled at the South Africans by monkey-chanting spectators. The police said it arrested five spectators after all-rounder Vernon Philander, assistant coach Vincent Barnes and security official Faisul Nagel were racially abused. The South African team management, however, did not file an official complaint. The two teams start a five-match one-day series with the first game here on October 18. Counselling must for Shoaib: PCB
Karachi, October 12 Shoaib was banned for 13 matches and fined Rs 34 lakhs and also put on a two-year probation yesterday by the PCB after finding him guilty of four instances of violating the players code of conduct. The charges included the brawl he had with teammate Mohammad Asif in South Africa last month and for which he was sent back by the team management as a disciplinary measure. "The 13-match ban and fine is the maximum we could impose on him for his violation of the code of conduct. But it is also compulsory for him to have some sort of counselling in this period," PCB Chairman Nasim Ashraf told reporters. Pakistan's team manager Talat Ali had recommended to the Board that Shoaib required counselling to overcome his problems which have seen him get into trouble with authorities since his debut in 1997. He said Shoaib's behaviour had disappointed him a lot as it damaged the image of Pakistan cricket. "But he has realised his mistake and regretted his actions to the disciplinary committee, team and the Board. So we want to move on. But we expect him to be very careful about his behaviour," he said. Shoaib will be available to play in the fifth and final one-day international against South Africa which is being held on October 29 in Karachi. The PCB explained that since the 13-match ban period started immediately after he was sent home, Shoaib had already completed a ban of nine matches, including seven in the Twenty20 World Cup and two Tests against South Africa. "He will miss the first four one-dayers against South Africa but be available for the fifth match in Karachi that is if the selectors feel he is match fit to resume playing at the top level," Ashraf said. Chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said Shoaib would be in contention for the final one-dayer against South

Sunny leads strong Punjab reply
Patiala, October 12 In reply, aided by a fluent 69 by Sunny
Sohal, the hosts were 109 for 3. Haryana started the proceedings on a wrong note with their captain Sandeep Singh electing to bat on a pitch which had a heavy moisture content and a certain tinge of green on it. Virender Singh Sethi clean bowled opener Sandeep Chowdhury with an
inswinger. After that, it was virtually a procession of batsmen to the pavilion. However, amidst all the ruins, one batsman who played an innings of rare brilliance was Ankit Rawat who ended the day with an unbeaten 81. It was mainly due to his polished innings that Haryana managed to stay afloat. In reply, Punjab started of shakily with off spinner Prem Parteek removing the dangerous looking Karan
Goel, who incidentally has been picked by the selectors today to play for India A. After beating him in the air on a couple of occasions, a frustrated Karan tried to hit himself out of trouble but found himself trapped plumb in front of the wicket.
Ravi Inder Singh too was consumed cheaply by medium pacer Sanjay
Badhwar. Sohal timed the ball well and looked in fine nick before being back after making 69. Scores:
Haryana: 1st innings: 158 all out ( Ankit Rawat 81
n.o, Dhruv Singh 27, Sidharth Kaul 5 for 42, Sarabjit Ladda 4 for 40, Virnder Singh Sethi 1 for 36) Punjab: 1st innings: 109 for 3 ( Sunny Sohal 69, Karan Goel 18, Ravi Inder Singh 9, Sanjay Badhwar 2 for 27, Prem Parteek 1 for 19). |

Patiala to witness world
wrestling event
Patiala, October 12 Giving details about the event, UWSOI president M.P. Singh said top wrestlers of the WWF will test their muscle prowess with each other during the multiple bouts. Prominent among the wrestlers coming to the city will be Tiger Jeet Singh, who still holds some spark, Himachal Pradesh born Sonjay Dutt, who, over the years, has earned the sobriquet of “Death Defying Super Star", “Muscleman” Gerry King and “The King of Old School” Steve Kaneriou. The UWSOI has also scheduled bouts at Jalandhar and Ludhiana on October 26 and 27, respectively. The organisers are working on a war footing to make the event a grand success. Tickets in denominations of Rs 250 and Rs 1,000 have been printed by the organisers. M.P. Singh said these bouts would provide an impetus to wrestling in Punjab. However, a senior Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) official, said the WWF bouts had nothing to do with Punjab or for that matter Indian wrestling. He said the bouts were fed on the hype and were just a source of entertainment and added that Punjab wrestling had absolutely no link with the proposed WWF bouts. |
