Harris puts South Africa on top
Karachi, October 3 First innings centurion Jacques Kallis was batting on 18 and Ashwell Prince on 11 as South Africa were 76 for three at close with an overall lead of 235. Playing in only his fifth Test, his fourth against Pakistan, Harris took 5 for 73 - his first five-wicket haul - to help dismiss the home side for 291 at tea after South Africa's first innings score of 450. Pakistan fought back through their spinners Abdul Rehman and Danish Kaneria, who took three wickets for two runs on a supportive pitch as South Africa lost their top three batsmen in quick succession. Rehman dismissed skipper Graeme Smith (25) and Hashim Amla (0) and leg-spinner Kaneria got Herschelle Gibbs (18) to reduce the visitors to 43 for three at one stage. Gibbs, reached 6,000 runs in his 85th match when he scored his third run. Three of Harris's victims in the second session were stumped by Boucher as he eclipsed the mark set by Australia's Ian Healy. "I am very proud to have achieved this record. Specially to break the record of a great wicketkeeper," Boucher told mediapersons. Harris started the Pakistan collapse by breaking an obdurate 84-run seventh-wicket stand between Malik and his deputy Salman Butt, who made a painstaking 24 from 76 balls. The two came together half an hour into the day when night watchman Abdul Rehman (9) was caught behind off Andre Nel to leave Pakistan 149 Left-handed Butt was trapped leg before by Harris with an armer playing across the line and five runs later, Malik had a rush of blood, played a wild slog and was beaten by the turn. He was dismissed with his team 12 runs short of saving the follow-on Tail-enders Gul and Kaneria (26) teamed up to save the follow-on by taking the total to 259. After Gul was dismissed, Kaneria and Mohammad Asif (10) put on 32 runs for the last wicket before Dale Steyn castled Asif with the second new ball. — Reuters Scoreboard South Africa (1st innings): 450 Pakistan (1st innings): Hafeez c Kallis b Harris 34 Kamran Akmal lbw b Harris 42 Younis Khan b Nel 6 Faisal Iqbal b Kallis 7 Misbah c Boucher b Steyn 23 Shoaib Malik st Boucher b Harris 73 Abdul Rehman c Boucher b Nel 9 Salman Butt lbw b Harris 24 Umar Gul st Boucher b Harris 12 Danish Kaneria not out 26 Mohammad Asif b Steyn 10 Extras: (b-15, lb-7, nb-2, w-1) 25 Total (all out, 97.3 overs) 291 Fall of wickets: 1-71, 2-82, 3-84, 4-97, 5-120, 6-149, 7-233, 8-238, 9-259 Bowling: Steyn 13.3-2-50-2, Ntini 11-2-48-0, Harris 36-13-73-5, Nel 20-4-59-2, Kallis 11-3-21-1, Smith 6-1-18-0. Teams arrive in Hyderabad
Hyderabad, October 3 The members of both teams were escorted to a hotel amid tight security soon after their arrival at the Begumpet Airport. A few fans gathered at the airport to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars were disappointed as the teams boarded their special buses inside the airport premises and left from another exit. India, trailing 0-1 after the defeat in Kochi yesterday, will take on the world champions in what promises to be an exciting encounter on Friday. The first match at Bangalore was abandoned due to rain. Both teams will turn out for net practice at the stadium in Uppal tomorrow. Tight security arrangements have been made for the match in view of the recent bomb blasts in the city. The police has already taken the control of the stadium, which will be hosting only its second one-day international so far. — IANS |

Confusion surrounds Inzamam’s Test career
Karachi, October 3 Inzamam's future has been a subject of intense speculation in recent weeks and it took a new turn today with some newspapers and a television channel claiming that he had entered into an agreement with the board which will pave the way for his exit from Test cricket. The widely circulated 'Jang' said the board had agreed to pay Rs 10 million to Inzamam after he agreed to retire from cricket and this was decided in a meeting which the batsman had with board chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf during a recent visit to Karachi. Even sources close to Inzamam said there was some truth in these reports but when contacted the former captain declined to make any comments on the subject. The PCB media advisor Aamir Bilal in a statement vehemently denied the board having reached any deal with Inzamam. But in the same breath, he created some confusion by saying that any policy decision on Inzamam would be made and announced in the next two or three days keeping in mind the larger interests of Pakistan cricket. "The news about the PCB assuring and guaranteeing Inzamam 10 million on his retirement from Test cricket is absolutely incorrect," the statement said. The statement is an indication that the board might be having second thoughts on forcing the former captain to retire so soon from Test cricket. One newspaper, 'Daily Express' had reported that Inzamam had no intentions to retire and would continue to play Test cricket. — PTI |

Hair bares his heart out in hearing
London, October 3 Hair, who has sued the ICC for sacking him yielding to "racially discriminatory pressure" from the Asian bloc, told the hearing that he would have earned about $90,000-100,000 in 2007 had he umpired his quota of Tests and ODIs. "My projected earnings from fees in ICC associate matches in this year would now appear to be a maximum of $30,000," he said. He said the loss had prompted him to search for another job but his efforts did not bear fruit. "After returning to Australia, I have been trying to find permanent employment without success. I have applied for positions at the Australian Rugby League and with a charity as a fund-raising manager, but I have been unsuccessful on each occasion," he said. Hair said the ICC's decision to sack him came as a trauma for his entire family. "I feel devastated and let down by the ICC. Since August 20, 2006, (the day of the final Test at the Oval) no one from ICC has shown any concern for my welfare or for the welfare of my family.” "My family has suffered the pain of reading headlines such as ‘disgraced former umpire' and 'sacked former umpire' and I have found it difficult to cope with daily life in the knowledge that I have not been given a reasonable opportunity to defend myself." "I was at a loss to understand how my career could possibly be effectively ended unless it was by a racially motivated and racially discriminated process," Hair said. "I asked Malcolm Speed if it could possibly be performance related but he agreed that my performances since joining the elite panel had been generally very good and I had been continually ranked in the top three umpires. Hair said he knew that ICC would not renew his contract. Amid the Oval controversy that followed, Hair offered to resign in return for $ 500,000. Hair denied an allegation by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that the offer compromised his position or constituted a "secret payment". "I was, to my mind, seeking some sort of settlement. There was nothing secretive. but I expected confidentiality." Cross-examining Hair, ICC barrister Michael Beloff said the Australian's case was based on suspicion. "I shall put it to the tribunal that you're swinging about wildly, seeking to make allegations against anyone you can without anything more than suspicion," Beloff said. Beloff also asked Hair whether it was right to call the action of the Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, as 'diabolical' as mentioned in his autobiography. — PTI |

Atapattu refuses to meet selectors Colombo, October 3 “We’d like him to play in Australia where we feel his skill and huge experience will be vital in Australian conditions,” de Mel had told Reuters. Atapattu, however, did not go to the meeting. “I got an email from the CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket inviting me for a discussion at 5 pm,” Atapattu told Reuters. “The email said the selectors were going to be there too and I replied saying that I did not want to waste my time with a selection committee headed by Ashantha de Mel,” he said. Atapattu (36) made himself unavailable for Sri Lanka’s last Test series against Bangladesh in July saying that he was still coming to terms with the bitter disappointment of not playing a game in the 2007 World Cup.

Sania through to Japan Open quarters
Tokyo, October 3 Sania came through 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 after a few nervous moments in her second-round match. After splitting the first two sets, Sania and Dellacqua played out an engrossing decider in which the Indian ace came out trumps to advance to the last-eight. However, the world number 29 Sania had to stave off stiff resistance from the 84th-ranked Australian in the final set. The 20-year-old Hyderabadi rallied from being two service breaks down - in the first and fifth game - to go 4-3 up with a couple of fiery aces. Dellacqua held her serve to make it 4-4 but lost the plot from there on and was broken in the 10th game as Sania clinched the contest after the Australian hit a forehand out. Sania said her experience of playing at the top helped her turn the tide in her favour in the “It's about making those points when it really counts. Probably she didn't make them the whole match, but I made them at 4-4 and I made them at 5-4. I think that counted at the end," she said. "In the final set, I played much better than I did in the first couple of sets. I think what's important is that you come through," she added. — PTI |

Dunhill Links Golf
Chandigarh, October 3 They will be playing in cold conditions with the low touching 4°C and prediction of showers and frosty conditions in the mornings. After playing in cold conditions, they will head back to Delhi for the Indian Open - an Asian Tour event - to be played from October 11. Jeev, who has played 27 events this season, is ranked 39th in the order of merit on the European Tour with a total prize money of 6.27 lakh European dollars. Jyoti Randhawa has been doing better than Jeev on the European tour. Ranked 33rd and having played 23 events, he has pocketed a prize money of 7.58 lakh dollars. However, because of a better US PGA Tour, Jeev stands much above Jyoti in the world rankings. While Jeev is ranked 74th in the world, Jyoti is placed at 112th rank. They will be pitted against 16 of the top 50 in world ranking, including the defending champion Padraig Harrington. The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship has a unique format. With a prize fund of US $5 million, it incorporates two separate competitions - an individual professional tournament for the world's leading golfers, and a team event in which they are paired with some of the most celebrated amateur golfers. Among the amateurs playing this week from the world of entertainment are Hugh Grant, the popular British actor, Ray Romano, star of Everybody Loves Raymond, George Lopez, US sitcom writer and actor, Don Felder of the Eagles, co-writer of Hotel California, John O'Hurley, who played J. Peterman in Seinfeld, Maury Povich, presenter of the US talk show Maury, and Spanish actress and model Ines Sastre. |
Seoul, October 3 The other Indians in the fray are Amandeep Johl and SSP Chowrasia. Gangjee, who finished third at the event last year, has been through a modest season so far and will hope to strike it big with a good showing here. He won the 2004 Volkswagen Masters China Open, but has not been able to claim another title after that. Meanwhile, Johl returns to action after a four-month injury layoff. The major draw in the tournament will be three-time Major champion Vijay Singh of Fiji along with defending champion Yang Yong-eun of Korea. Singh will make his debut in the Korea Open, which is marking its 50th anniversary by offering a record $1 million in total prize money. The Fijian has more than 50 titles to his name. He won the Mercedez-Benz Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational this year. However, Yang would be eager to retain his title at the Woo Jeong Hills Country Club. Last year’s triumph sparked a rich vein of form for the beefy Korean, who went on to win the HSBC Champions, stunning world number one Tiger Woods in the final round. — PTI |
