Assembly elections:
NC to confront CM on home turf
Udhampur, September 24 Although former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and party president Omar Abdullah still avoid direct attack on Azad, other leaders have been availing themselves all opportunities to attack the Chief Minister while highlighting misdeeds of the coalition regime. A campaign launched by NC leader Aslam Goni from Bhalesa, native place of the Chief Minister, reflects the opposition has decided against a walkover to Azad this time. Goni, who contested 2002 Assembly elections for the Bhaderwah seat, has toured Bhalesa and Gandoh areas and addressed a series of public meeting. National Conference leaders, who earlier used to be soft towards Azad, minced no words in attacking him. Goni and other leaders visited many remote areas of Bhalesa and highlighted failures of the Congress-led coalition in general and Azad in particular. They alleged that despite being the home town of Azad, this belt had been lagging behind most areas of the state in development. Whether or not the NC succeeds in making inroads into the Congress bastion, the way party has launched a campaign against Azad indicates relations between two parties are not as good as in 2005 when Azad had assumed charge. When Azad had contested election from the Bhaderwah constituency in 2006 to become a member of J&K Assembly, the NC had not fielded candidate against him.

BJP decries PDP’s self-rule doctrine for J&K Jammu, September 24 In a statement faxed to The Tribune, Khajuria has urged the UPA government at the Centre to recall the PDP leaders from the United States, where they had gone to attend a seminar on Kashmir conflict. The statement added advocacy of self-rule propounded by Pakistani President General Pervez Mushrraf aimed at diluting India’s sovereignty over the state. Condemning the recent meeting between the Hurriyat leaders and the European Union delegation in Srinagar, Khajuria said the BJP had already rejected the four-point Kashmir solution as advocated by Pakistan on the ground that the same suggested shared sovereignty of India and Pakistan over the state and the formula was nothing but a manifestation of the Pakistani President’s communal thinking. |
