Srinagar, September 19
Preparations are on for holding the fifth National Winter Games from February10 to 15 next at a tourist resort of Gulmarg in Kashmir. The Indian Olympic Association has already been conveyed the consent by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Arrangements for this purpose were finalised at a high-level meeting here yesterday under the chairmanship of minister for tourism, Mohammad Dilawar Mir. He said holding of national-level winter sports would showcase Kashmir as a favourite winter tourism destination at the national and international levels.

This is for the third time Kashmir is hosting the National Winter Games, with the first having been organised at Gulmarg in 1998.

The mega event to showcase Kashmir was first held during the National Conference government headed by Farooq Abdullah in 1998 less than two years after an elected government took over in the wake of militancy in Kashmir that erupted early in 1990. Another National Winter Games event was held in Gulmarg in 2004, while two other events have been held at Auli in Uttarakhand and Shimla in Himachal Pradesh.

The meeting, held under the chairmanship of Mir, was informed that the latest and modern winter sports machinery and ski equipment would be imported for better facilities to those participating in the games. For the first time, alpine events at Kangdoori and Nordic events at the Gulmarg Golf Course are proposed to be held.

As tempers ran high among the jobless youth, they have decided to approach Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and bring to his notice the wrongdoings committed in the selection.
