India beat Pak 3-0 — in cricket! Durban, September 14 In cricket’s version of a penalty shootout, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Robin Uthappa were successful in hitting the stumps for India, while Pakistan’s Yasir Arafat, Umar Gul and Shahid Afridi failed to do so. In reply to India’s 141 for 9 in 20 overs, Pakistan finished at 141 for 7. Misbah-ul-Haq was the top scorer for Pakistan with 53. He was run out on the last ball when his team needed just one run to win the match. India topped the group with three points, followed by Pakistan (two) and Scotland (one). Earlier, Mohammad Asif’s four-wicket burst rocked India before Robin Uthappa and Mahendra Singh Dhoni propped up the side. In a rain-plagued match, the Indian top order succumbed to Asif’s spell and the side stuttered to 36 for four before Uthappa (50) and Dhoni (33) helped bring some respectability to the score.

Johannesburg, September 14 Sanath Jayasuriya’s brute power-hitting enthralled the spectators as the veteran blasted 88 off 44 balls, while skipper Mahela Jayawardene hit 65 from just 27 deliveries. And if that was not enough, Jehan Mubarak’s 13-ball 46 came as a showstopper. Having posted a record total of 260 which saw them going past Australia’s total of 221, the Lankan bowlers allowed the Kenyans to reach a meagre 88 for nine. The Sri Lankan batsmen peppered their innings with an astounding 30 boundaries and 11 sixes to sent shock waves through their opponents. Kenya, who lost their first match to New Zealand and needed a victory here to stay in the tournament, are now out of the World Cup. Despite losing Upul Tharanga (10) early in the innings to Thomas Odoyo, Jayasuriya and Sangakkara (30 off 18) began a run riot. The duo posted 75 for the second wicket and laid the foundation of a big total before Sangakkara fell sweeping to Jimmy Kamande (3-48). However, there was no respite for the Kenyans as Jayawardene and Jayasuriya maintained the tempo. New Delhi, September 14 An overtly religious Yousuf's decision to defect to the cash-rich rebel league, even if it jeopardised his career with the national team, rocked the Pakistan Cricket Board but Ashraf insists he has not given up yet. "Yes, he has been the backbone of Pakistan batting and we badly need him back to where he belonged. Whether it's Test or one-dayers, he was one player we could not do away with. And I'm still confident that we would see him in Pakistan colours again," Ashraf told PTI in an interview here. Yousuf, along with his former captain Inzamam-ul Haq and teammates Abdul Razzaq, Imran Farhat and Azhar Mehmood, joined the Indian breakaway league but Ashraf is confident he can wean away the player. "I'm still hopeful. I don't know whether he has indeed signed the contract. I hope he, for the team's sake, and above all, his career's sake, takes the right decision. "He is basically a good human being, a gentleman and a perfect team-man to boot. He has been an indispensable player for us and it would be good for both parties if he comes back." Yousuf was in scintillating form last year, scoring 1,788 runs in 11 Tests, including nine hundreds, a feat that won him the ICC Test Player of the Year award in Johannesburg earlier this week. His achievement also saw him pip Viv Richards' long-standing record of most Test runs in a calendar year, besides hitting most Test hundreds in a year. Ashraf revealed that he also spoke to Farhat to discourage him from taking the ICL plunge.

Advani bags world billiards title
New Delhi, September 14 Advani won 1963-1489 to lift the Arthur Walker Trophy after a six-hour battle at the Orchid Country Club. Pankaj, who was defending both the points (150-up) and time format (two hours) titles, had lost in the round of 16 in the points format last week. “It was the first time that I successfully defended a world title. And I had to come back after doing badly in the points format,” said Advani after their match. As the title in the points format was won by another Indian, Rupesh Shah, Advani was happy that Indians ruled the roost at the highest level. Advani said his match against Peter Gilchrist was his best game in the event as he made a 355 break to end his resistance. Gilchrist had downed Rupesh Shah 1148-819 in the quarterfinals.
