Qazi Afzal resigns

Srinagar, September 4
Two days after the Forest and Environment portfolio was taken from him, housing and urban development minister Qazi Afzal today resigned from the council of ministers in the Azad-led coalition government. His resignation came after his meeting with the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti.

Qazi Afzal, who represents the Ganderbal constituency, which he had wrested from the National Conference after a gap of 27 years, held that the decision taken by the Chief Minister was a grim reminder of the “undesirable act” of 2006, when attempts had been made to violate the coalition dharma.

Taking away the forest portfolio in a “rash manner” and the mode of its public disclosure had “put a question mark on my credibility as a minister”, Qazi said in his resignation letter to the Chief Minister. He added that the move had also “hit at the very roots of the basic understanding about the working of the coalition arrangement”.

“The basic issues raised by this action in my case are the same that had cropped up in September 2006, when an attempt was made at violating the universally accepted coalition dharma”, he stated.

Earlier in the day, the minister accompanied by the chairman of the Legislative Council, Ghulam Nabi Lone, visited Chrar-e-Sharief and announced Rs 2 crore for construction of the ongoing Khankah project. An amount of Rs 4.25 crore has already been used with the total cost of the project estimated to be around Rs 26 crore.

For the first time in many years, hundreds of people from Bhaderwah and adjoining villages participated in the procession.

Reports from Kishtwar said security was intensified in temples and other religious places keeping in mind the festival. In Reasi, an impressive procession was taken out which passed through different bazaars of the town.
