Oldest Sikh leader hits a ton

Giani Mohinder Singh (99) is the oldest surviving Sikh leader. This former SGPC secretary will be celebrating his 100th birthday today. Full of vigour, he reads at least three newspapers and exercises for half an hour every morning. Asked about secrets of longevity, he quips, “Honesty and simplicity.”

A shopping complex sans sparkle
Amritsar, August 31
Located on the posh Lawrence Road, the Nehru Shopping Complex is fast losing its sheen, thanks to poor upkeep by the local authorities. Built by the Amritsar Improvement Trust, the area was a coveted place for setting up showrooms and offices.

The police has launched a special campaign to nab proclaimed offenders (POs) who had been evading arrest or had been absconding for a long period.

‘Include SMS under unsolicited calls’
Amritsar, August 31 SMS messages by telecom operators to promote business should be included in the category of unsolicited calls as these were disturbing and causing nuisance. This was advised by Consumer Rights Protection Society general secretary B.R. Preenja.

Expert hands likely to restore Bungas, Baba Atal

6 city kids head to US, Japan for table poker tourney

Morari Bapu to be in holy city on Nov 16
Amritsar, August 31 Morari Bapu will arrive in the holy city on November 16 to deliver religious discourse to the city residents from November 17 to 24. Stating this to mediapersons, Dr Harbilas Rai, president, Shri Ram Katha Samithi, Shivala Bagh Bhayian, Amritsar, said chief minister Parkash Singh Badal was likely to welcome Bapuji at 4 pm on November 16.

Gangster nabbed
Amritsar, August 31
Notorious gangster Abhjit Singh, alias Ankur Likhari, and members of his gang were arrested today when they were hatching a plan to loot a restaurant in Ranjit Avenue here on Friday. Besides Likhari, those arrested included Amandip Singh, alias Aman Mota, of Sultanwind village and Dhiraj Chopra of Shivala Colony, while five of the other accomplices, identified as Sukwhinder Singh, alias Lucky Bhatia, Arvinder Singh, Shingari, Kamaljit Singh and Sanjiv Kamar, managed to escape. 

IT commissioner Rattan attains superannuation
Amritsar, August 31
After an illustrious career spanning for more than 35 years, Amritsar income tax commissioner-II B.S. Rattan, IRS (1978), retired today. Born in small village of Bathinda, Rattan passed his matriculation in first division and then joined Rajindra Government College to complete his English honours. 

‘Obesity on the rise in Punjab, Gujarat’

“Obesity is taking alarming proportions in the states of Punjab and Gujarat. The menace is giving rise to increased problems of arthritis (joint problems) at a very early age. Cases of arthritis of weight-bearing areas like the hip and knee joints were also on the rise, as the weight of the patient increases.” This was pointed out at a doctor-patient interface, organised by Fortis Hospital and Escorts Heart and Super Specialty Institute, on Thursday.

Medical camp for widows
Amritsar, August 31
The BJP’s medical cell is organising a medical camp in Maqboolpura on Mehta Road, popularly known as the widow’s locality, on September 2. Giving details about the camp, former health minister and Punjab medical cell president (BJP) Baldev Raj said the camp would be held at Citizens Forum Vidya Mandir School.

NCC cadets get a pat
Amritsar, August 31 
Around 36 NCC cadets, who participated in the Pre-Thal Sainik Camp-1, were honoured by Punjab Battalion group commander Col G.P.S. Sawhney. The camp was held at Ferozepore for girl cadets and Kapurthala for boy cadets.
