Jalandhar, July 8
Former Haryana MLA Partap Singh has demanded immediate arrest of Dera sacha Sauda chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh for ‘hurting’ the religious sentiments of Sikhs.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Partap, who is brother of ex-Haryana Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala, also accused Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal of having close links with the dear head.

“They are quite close. It’s evident from the fact that the SAD supremo Badal had appealed to the dera followers to vote for him in the recently held assembly elections,” he said, adding that the Punjab CM was ‘shielding’ Gurmit Ram Rahim. He urged the Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti to slap ‘Tankah’ on Badal for his ties with the dera chief.

“Gurmit Ram Rahim has hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikhs by dressing up like Guru Gobind Singh. The government needs to take him to task as nobody is above the law. I don’t know what’s stopping cops enter dera and arrest him,” he said.

Accusing Congress of trying to foment the trouble, he said the party along with SAD was trying to draw a maximum mileage out of the entire issue. He claimed that Haryana youths were coming back to the Sikh fold after the dera row. “They are realising their folly now. The Haryana Sikhs are in favour of an independent Sikh Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee on the lines of DSGMC,” he added.

Batala, July 8
Members of the Postgraduate Masters Union, Gurdaspur, at a meeting held here today flayed non-implementation of granting higher pay scales on the basis of higher qualification in some schools of the state. Members rued that granting higher scales on the basis of higher qualification from the date of passing MA/MSc had been implemented in many schools in Punjab but the Director Public Instruction (S) forbade the heads of schools in some schools from implementing higher scales, they alleged.

They urged education minister Upinderjeet Kaur and the DPI (S) to implement the decision to award lecturer scales to all the postgraduates from time to time as per the letters of February 19, 1979, and September 20, 1979, as well as the Supreme Court judgement in this regard.

Phagwara, July 8
Although the Congress party kept its usual attack on the SAD-BJP government over the vindictive policies against the party men but amusingly it also admitted of committing excesses during its
previous rule.

District Congress Committee Kapurthla president Sukhpal Singh Khera said during the first four months of the Badal-led government, there have been 111 ‘false’ cases against the Congressmen. During our five-year rule, just 178 cases were registered against opposition supporters, he added.

Addressing a news conference, he said the party, however, can’t deny that it did not commit excesses during its rule.

Speaking high of Centre’s role, Khera said the Congress-led UPA government is extending its support to the state government for development but the state government is busy harassing the Congressmen. He asked the Akalis to stop politics of vendetta.

The SAD policies lack direction and won’t benefit the common man, he added.
